I understand I can control the brightness of the touch pad, but what about the actual main screen, where we read the book. Is that as bright as it gets? I cannot see the screen in the dark. I want to be able to read in bed, or on an airplane or where ever without a book light. Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation of the device?

The main screen where the text is eInk, it can't be back lit. So you didn't do anything wrong. Thats just the way all the eInk screens are (Nook, Sony, Kindle just to name a few). The rest of us use external lighting (clip on lights) to read in low/no light situations.

Use the same controls you would use when reading a paper back book in bed.
Its on your night stand.
Or you can get a nook-light. Google should help.

I have the Lyra light, and it's great. Another good option is to get the paperback-sized Light Wedge. I bought mine at the B&N store. I love it, and it is almost perfectly sized for my nook!
