Call Customer Support. It sounds like your nook did a factory fallback for some reason.

When you unregister the Nook your shelves get erased. This is a limitation with using shelves. All your content gets erased. You should make a copy of your my documents file and save it to your computer and if you have to unregister then you can copy your my documents folder back on to the Nook

Still - customer service should have warned her in advance though.

That would be a pain if you have 300+ or even a whole lot more, books on your Nook and you took the time to place them on different shelves...then having to do the factory reset for whatever reason (hey, it's still an electronic device, so things happens), and having to do this all over again.  The more the reason why B&N need to have some sort of software for the PC for situations like this. Could be similar to Calibre, use it as a triple backup.

Hope the OP saved everything as a backup.

I think you missed the title of the thread or responded to the wrong thread. Customer Support was not involved. The Nook did this on its own.

Re: My Nook Reset itself and lost all sideloaded files in My Documents

Why if I am writing to the main memory of the Nook on My Documnts folder, all data was deleted?

I did a battery reset during the crash of B&N servers on Christmas and I did not loose My Dcouments Data???

Any B&N expert reading this? any thoughts??

Unregistering the Nook allows you to return the device to B&N or to transfer it to another individual without manually having to delete everything.

@skydive

You are not being clear about your problem leaving members (other nook owners) to guess what is going on. Your title says the nook did this on its own. You later state that you did it yourself.

Unregistering your nook and re-registering your nook is not the same as a "Battery Reset", Reset to Factory Defaults or what ever it is you did.

Loosing shelves is one of the consequences of unregistering and re-registering your nook. Loosing sideloaded content is another matter.

Re: My Nook Reset itself and lost all sideloaded files in My Documents

It was clear.  The nook reset itself.  THEN, it was unregistered and reregistered.  Mine did the same thing about a month ago.  However  - it unregistered itself.  I had to do the registration from scratch.

Re: My Nook Reset itself and lost all sideloaded files in My Documents

Mine has done this same thing twice in the last week and about 6 times since the latest software version came out.  Yesterday it did it when I plugged it in to recharge it.   I would just be mildly annoyed if I could access the internet and redown load the newest software and my books but for some reason after one of these episodes, I can never connect and have to wait until I get home!

Customer service told me last month if it keeps happening they might have to replace it.  ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Re: My Nook Reset itself and lost all sideloaded files in My Documents

@gstone:

I am very clear. It done that itself.

I present the battery reset as example that I did not loose anything, and the battery reset was when BN have all the server chaos on Christmas ...

The reset itself was yesterday

I did the deregister because also I was unable to download anything.....

and on other post, deregister and register is a procedure to overcome that issue.

Thanks for the clarification on the consequences on shelves, but my frustration stands. That SHOULD NOT HAPPEND.

And for example imagine if you have 300+ and you take the time to oragnize in shelves. Then this unstable software make me to reset the NOOK or deregiste/register procedure, then you lost everything and have to startover?

come on!! Thats not good.....

Re: My Nook Reset itself and lost all sideloaded files in My Documents

Check settings and see if you still have software version 1.5 installed.

If not, the nook performed a factory fallback because it is having operational problems.

You need to call Customer Support to resolve this issue.

If version 1.5 is installed plug your nook into your computer and verify that your sideloaded content is in fact gone. For example your wallpapers.

If your sideloaded content is still there, make backups to your computer. On your computer, make sure the file names only include alphanumeric characters. For example no & ,$,*, etc. They should all follow the form Filename, Filename01, Filename02 etc. Do not copy files with filenames that include non-alphanumeric characters to your nook.

Call Customer Support and explain that your nook is resetting to Factory Defaults spontaneously.

Re: My Nook Reset itself and lost all sideloaded files in My Documents

@gstone

Thanks for your help.

confirmed that the SW version is 1.5

I connect to my computer and the sideloaded content was there. I never tried that. I was just looking into the nook directly.

All content is there. I backup everthing.

WE learn:

-if you deregister/register, you will loose all the shelves.

-Sideloaded content may not visible at once, and need to connect to computer to verify if it is there.

Again: thanks and good karma is on your way :smileyhappy:

Re: My Nook Reset itself and lost all sideloaded files in My Documents

@skydive

If I understand, you were required to perform an unregister reregister operation because of some obscure problem with the B&N server and your account preventing you from downloading books. This happened to a number of people during this time frame.

Your current situation is ;

  1. Some or all of your sideloaded books are not visible in My Documents on the nook.
  2. Your nook reset the wallpapers to the default.
  3. The custom wallpapers are not listed as an option on the nook.

1. First, hold the power button down for 20 seconds (Hard Reset) to turn the nook off. Turn the nook back on. Check My Documents and see if your books are now available on the nook. If they are still missing press Check for new content in the My documents touch screen.

If books are still missing;

This normally indicates there is a book you have sideloaded that the nook's file system has trouble reading. The problem could be the filename, or something in the metadata. You will have to remove sideloaded books one at a time until you find the one that is causing the problem.

If this is the case, the problem may not become apparent when the book was initially sideloaded. Sometimes it only becomes apparent after the nook has woken from sleep mode or been shut down and turned back on.

2 When you unregister then reregister your nook that resets the wallpapers to the default settings. This is normal.

3. Hold the power button down for 20 seconds to turn the nook off. Turn the nook back on and see if your custom wallpapers are now listed as an option. If they are not listed, this could be a problem with the mage format, image size, file name, or some other quirk with the image itself.

Re: My Nook Reset itself and lost all sidesaddle files in My Documents

Hi,

        sorry, not answering the question above, but adding to it. About two days ago, I turned on my nook and it said that it was updating the software or something, but it took an unusually long time. I just waited, but when it finally turned on, it was as if I had just bought it and it asked for me to register my nook. I have had it for over a year now and I never deregistered my nook or did anything that I can think of that would have caused this...I'm really fustrated. I tried to register again using the same email and password I had for my already existing account, but it won't let me. When I go on my account through the website, everything is there and still exists but it won't let me get back on it through the nook. What can I do to get everything back?

You've responded to a thread on the forum for the original NOOK, also known as the NOOK First Edition. While there was a period when a common forum served the First Edition and the newer Simple Touch model, neither of those models (including the Simple Touch with Glowlight) allows the instalation or use of APPS beyond those installed at the factory or by subsequent B&N updates. You would stand a better chance of a useful response in one of the forums here at B&N for the model you are actually using (apparently NOOK Color or Nook Tablet).

Re: My Nook Reset itselfs and lost all sideloaded files in My Documents

I find myself having to turn off the unit completely at least once a day, otherwise it will not find the wifi signals. I have also lost music files, movie files and books I've downloaded from my computer. Definitely has some bugs in this things software, which needs to be addressed...

But this is a Nook First Edition forum, and the First Edition not only doesn't have any compatibility with movies the music/audio book player is pretty lame (no play lists or way to organize tracks by album genre or artist). Clearly you have a Nook Color or Nook Tablet and we can't tell which. It's like asking the staff at the garden center how to paper train your puppy. You might get lucky and somebody is knowledgeable in both topics, but it's probably going to amount to nothing more than a rant.
