Something worse happened to me. The STR is constantly stuck on the screensaver, even when I reboot (hold down for 20 seconds, boot back up).
Touchscreen doesn't work no matter how many times I reboot.
Battery level is at 94% and charging.
I got the STR last Friday (so four day of use). Never did anything questionable with it.
Can't get ANYTHING to work (swiping, trying to turn off regularly, nothing works).
what to do now?

I just picked mine up yesterday and have had this issue numerous times. This morning it happened after just flipping 3 pages. I really love the device but this makes it annoying to use. I hope they come out with a fix for it soon.

I just returned my n2e to the local B&N and picked up a new one because it had this issue.
I've been reading the new one tonight and it's doing it too.
I guess we're unpaid beta testers... I hope they fix it soon

You should exchange the device as it looks like you got a defective one. This should not be happening.

I picked up my new Nook on June 10th and have also had the screen freeze up on me. After playing around with it for a bit, I was finally able to get it to reboot; however, that night, my battery was at 65% and the next morning it was only at 18%.
I called and spoke to a tech - they felt it was because I did not fully charge it (yeah right!).
Not happy at all.

I bought mine on Saturday and when I went to read last night, it was stuck on the screensaver. NOTHING works! I press down on the power button for 20 seconds and nothing happens. I called the store and they said they may be able to fix it for me. However, I would rather them just replace it if I'm already having problems. They told me that if they had to replace it, I would have to wait for them to SHIP it to me, which could take a WEEK! They won't just replace it in store. You know why? Because they would rather keep selling more of their crappy product than replace the one you ALREADY BOUGHT and DOESN'T WORK! I am SO angry! Horrible customer service!!!!!!!!!!!

Larryb52 wrote:I don't think returning it is the answer as I have had this happen about 4 times since saturday , to me seems software problem. I called tech support & reported it. Hopefully there will be a quick software issue to resolve the problem. You can't have a touch device lose it touch capabilities...
There is something to be said for readers w/o touch screen capability like the N1E, or (gasp!), the Kindle 3. No T/S means one less thing that doesn't work. I agree it's a nice technology to have included in the reader, and does make for a more natural experience interfacing with it, but, like anything else, the more you pile on, the more that can break. I think e-ink touch screens are an emerging technology, and I hope that it's just a software issue that's bugging those affected. I really want to buy the N2E, but I'll wait till the forums show reports stating that the issue has been fixed once and for all.......

The N1E does have a touch screen (I have problems with mine all the time), and the keyboard on the kindle can go bad. It's just apples, oranges and pears. They can all rot on you.

I was referring to the e-ink touch screen, not the capacitative touch screens. Those can lock up too, I agree, but my comment was referring only to the e-ink t/s.

I was having the same problem this morning, riding the bus to work.
If i held the nook out of the wind from the open window, after about 5 minutes, the touch screen started working again.

I am having the same problem as well. I called Nook support and they were not aware of the touch screen issue. Scary. They did tell me that if you hold the power button for 10 seconds the machine will shut off. I am hoping that this rebot will correct the problem in the future whenever it happens.

Don't know if it helps anybody, but for me, I notice the problem popping up more often, if I've been using the hardware buttons to turn pages for a while.
I don't know if the sensors are going into a low power mode because the touch screen isn't being used, or what.

I have used the hardware buttons on occasion, but for the most part I just touch the edge of the screen, usually near the middle between the buttons (hope that made sense). I had it lock up once about a week ago, and then about 6 times yesterday. Took it back for an exchange today. Hopefully I won't have these issues with the new one. I'll be sure to report back when I know something.

Mine is doing the same thing as everyone else. It's not fun, but glad I am not the only one. I am debating on keeping it or taking it back. I just bought it yesterday so I guess I will give it a couple days and see if they decide to send an update.

try pressing the power button, on the back, twice. that worked for me. Press it once until you see the power off menu. Since you cant use the screeen, press and hold the power button again until the screeen saver appears

I bought mine yesterday (Jun 16), charged it and completed set-up, then had the touchscreen freeze while I was reading the instruction manual! I had been using the turn buttons for awhile the first time it happened, so that may have something to with it, but then it happened several more times and I had been using the touchscreen exclusively for pageturning (and w/o highlighting, as others have mentioned). The menu button will bring up the menu, but it won't respond to touch. Powering off & on with the back button resolves it (until it happens again shortly after.)
I am using the screen protector film - no one has mentioned that as possible interference. Is the problem occuring with and without the film?

No screen for me. The whole concept of sticking something on the screen is very questionable on a touch screen device that sees touches by interruption of the IR beams.
In fact, in general screen protectors seem scammy to me.

I've had mine about 1 week. The touchscreen generally works fine at startup, but then stops responding to any kind of touch after random intervals. The page turn and nook buttons still work. I've noticed that when this happens if I wait for the screensaver to engage, I can unlock the screen and the swipe/touch function works again. Annoying, but not a showstopper. I'm thinking of exchanging it, but going on a trip in a day or so & don't want to bother with it until I get back.
