I've also experienced this. At first it was just the touchscreen stopped working. Then last night I went to go change the page and it accidently highlighted something but instead of properly highlighting it and showing the menu it seems to have frozen partially with touch not working, however hardware buttons worked just fine. So definitely a software issue. I won't bother trying to get an RMA or whatever because whatever causes this will only be fixed with an update that contains a bug fix for it.

I had purchased the simple touch nook and it immediately began having problems with the screen freezing. After a week I decided to take it back. At least if I left it alone it would unfreeze. Nowthe new one has "ghosting"- showing the previous page underneath the page I'm on and it won't go away. I'd rather be dealing with the freeze screen than this.

My first Nook Color screen stop working periodically and it turned out to be defective so B&N replaced it for me. I was told that they had seen this problem before on a few Nook Colors. Have yours checked out by 2 different stores to get a good opinion. Some stores have better tech support than others.

I read the problems with "ghosting" when they 1st came out. So it has to be a known issue. You might need to take this one back too. Sorry you've experienced both problems. OH with my frozed screen. I plugged it into the charger for awhile ( not sure why I tried that...guess I had tried everything else) when I took it off, it was fine again.

Mine had the non responsive touch issue (at 40% charge). No reset tricks worked. I took it back to B&N and they played with it for a while before determining it was defective. There was another person with the same issue, but her problem was "solved" by recharging and resetting the unit.
I had to RMA mine back with a CC#. The new one arrived after four days. I was emailed a UPS return label. No problem with this process.
I very rarely connect to wireless since it wastes the charge, so I doubt that is the issue. I load all my books through USB to the SD card.
My defective N2 also one had a problem where the physical page buttons would not work after wake up until I went to a menu item first. The new N2 also has this issue. No real complaint though, I like the touchscreen, and still love the N2.

The touch screen on my replacement nook just stopped working. The n option button is unresponsive, and even the rear power button does not seem to act correctly (charge is 87%). Having an SD card is all I can think of which could cause the problem. Kind of defeats the purpose of having the slot though. I am very careful with the device and have a decent cover. I am going to wait until my CC has a credit for the first return before starting another, but this is annoying. I wish the reset would work for me, but so far, no luck.
I bought this because of the size (and touchscreen), even though I have a Kindle, but I am glad I also have the Kindle so I can actually read instead of merely playing with a device.
I agree with others that it seems like software, it would be great if that is what the problem is. I really prefer to read on the N2, but I have almost given up trying.

I wonder if this is really a software issue or a batch of bad infared panels.

I've been wondering that too.

Same problem here. Brand new Nook from Best Buy and in less than 5 hours the screen quits working. It has nothing to do with highlighting for me, it just simply quits working when I go to flip the page. If I would have known these issues beforehand, I would have gone with the kindle.

Stick it back in the box and return it. It's a few hours old so just take it back. You can get another or you can get a kindle.

I bought my Nook STR about a month ago and absolutely love it! I've used it quite heavily and have only had the touchscreen become unresponsive on me once. A simple reboot fixed this, so I wasn't terribly concerned. But suddenly, just yesterday, the touchscreen refused to respond. I spent a few hours playing with it, charging it, rebooting it, resetting it and I wanted to scream!! Nothing worked!
However, I've finally found that the touchscreen still works, but only if I touch in a certain way... It seems to only work when I touch very delicately with the tip of my finger, whereas I used to touch with the fleshy part of my finger. This is weird! I'm relieved that it still works, as I foolishly threw out my purchase receipt, but why would the sensitivity of the screen suddenly change like this?

This happened to me as well. My Nook is brand new (1 day of use); it occurred several times on on the first charge, with about 86% battery remaining. It returns to normal after a reset.

I recently bought the nook simple touch and have experienced screen freezing three times. It happens when I accidentally highlight something (which seems to happen too easily). I can still turn the page on the physical keys, but the highlight shadow stays on the following pages with no way for me to get rid of it. Plugging the nook into the charger and then unplugging fixes it, but that's a problem I shouldn't have to fix. So if these freezes are fixed by software updates, how do we check for/receive them?

I had to return mine to the store because of the screen freezing. They had told me that if I didn't have the receipt, they could find it by ( I think she said) serial number. Also, if you used a credit card, or bank card, you might find it on your statement.
If mine had not frozen 2 times in 1 week, I probably would have waited for the "software update" which is expected to fix the problem....also I was told they are expecting software to fix the sync problems.
Mine won't since - last page read- with my Droid X
EDITED : I purchased mine on June 4, 2011

My replacement N2E stopped working just like the first one. I was getting ready to start the RMA process for my second N2E, but I noticed the update and applied it. The Nook started working again. Hopefully that fixed it permanently, although it was doing some pretty strange things previously. So far, so good.

Has anyone had this problem AFTER the update?
Mine just updated a moment ago as I went to side-load some library books, so I haven't used it yet.

I got my replacement Nook from the B&N store on Monday. So far no freezing with this one. I just did the software update. Fingers crossed..... my original worked fine for a month before it froze up 2 times in one week. I really want this to work. My Nook Color has a crappy battery life.

After reading all this posts, I took my Nook back to B&N store I bought it from planning on exchanging it since it happened to me (the word hi-lite freeze) twice this morning. The lady called the Nook tech support and she was told they are aware of the problem and has just released an update to the software for the Nook which addresses this problem. So I got upgraded to the latest software and will now test in the coming week whether it still happens or not. For those who are experiencing the same problem - try updating your Nook to the latest driver. Hope this helps.

I forced the upgrade on my Nook replacement ( new from the B&N store). Hoping that with a brand new Nook & the update I won't have any more problems. My Nook Color is really nice but don't want to go back to that because of the battery life.
Hope this software does the trick.
FYI: The upgrades are suppose to happen automatically during the next week, but you can go fetch if you want.
