Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

I have learned not to expect the Nook to react as quickly as my slowest computer. The only time I have had freezing problems is when I have been too anxious and have repeated pressed the button to wake up the Nook. To unfreeze the Nook, I pop the back and lift out the battery and then plug it back in. This is the same thing I did with my old laptop everytime it froze.

There is one more thing you need to learn.

Stop messing with the battery.

Hold power switch down for 20 seconds (count 'em), let it up and tap it again.

Yeah, do what icebike says. Stop messing with the battery.

I don't have the nook freeze up as often as some people complain, but it does do so in the rare occasion and I do what icebike said in his post.

Re: Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

@SkipperGirlVA,

Thank you for posting.  We're striving to improve the reading experience and your input is valuable.

Try these steps, one at a time to get your nook fully functioning again:

1.  Press and hold the power button for 20-30 seconds and then release.  Then press it again for about 4 seconds to power up your nook.

2.  The battery on your nook may be completely drained. Connect your nook to a wall outlet using the nook AC-Adapter and charge your nook for at least 2 hours.  In some cases, re-charging may require the following steps below:

-Unplug the nook.

-Remove the battery (if you don't know how, I have attached a video page on how to remove the battery:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/video.asp?bnit=H&bnrefer=HOMEPAGE&cds2Pid=30195#vid3

-The Nook should begin to go through its booting process.  Once booted, replace the battery (don't turn the nook off or unplug).

If you are unable to access your eBooks, you may want to go to your eBooks library online at BN.com and archive and then unarchive the eBooks in question.  Then on your nook, check for new content and see if you still receive the same message.

There also may be an issue with your log in info. You may want to double check your account online to make sure you have a default payment and billing address set up.  Sometimes retyping your credit card number helps.  Also, if you have a middle initial in your billing info, try taking that out.

Re: Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

have had my second freeze today since i got my nook on 12/24/09.  This is the first freeze since 1.2 was released and happened when i switched to airplane mode.  I did the quick restart (hold for 20 seconds then push again) and my nook quickly restarted.  I am very pleased!

In all that time of ownership, this can't be the first time you went to airplane mode.

So what was different about going to airplane mode THIS time?

Same location?

Same Wifi router?

Was Wifi on?

Re: Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

I also noticed that the only time mine freezes is when I've been trying to press buttons too rapidly.  My advice, wait for the Nook to finish the action completely before pressing anything else.  This goes for typing too.  If its working on something then overwhelming it with another button will make it freeze.

And like others have said, just holding the power button for 15-20 seconds will turn it off and reset it just fine.

Re: Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

I have had the Nook since January, and it freezes often. I even put paper around the battery.

When the nook freezes, I hold the start down for minimum of 20 seconds, than repush the start for more than 4 seconds, and nothing happens. This happens often.

I have to remove the battery to get the Nook to re-boot. Anyone know why I cannot re-boot without removing and re installing the battery?

Thanks for your help

Bardon

The second push should be a tap, not a tap and hold.

Paper "Around the battery"?

No, no, no.  A business card thickness of paper (or two) wedged at the top right edge of the battery only.  (trim to fit)

No, sometiimes you have to remove the battery.  I tried the 20 second power-down repeatedly, to no avail.  Then, under the guidance of a tech specialist on the phone, I learned about removing the battery.  Also, if you power the nook direct from the wall, w/o the battery, you can determine if the problem is the battery (it was in my case).  However, it has been 6 weeks, and the battery is still on back order.

Re: Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

I just popped in to see if I could find a soloution for my freeze up. I have done everything described here, plugged it in and let it charge, the light went off, still frozen. Took the back off and the battery out. Still frozen.  I have tried turning it off like described and then hit the button again(clicked it) still frozen.  It is frozen with the message "Time to charge your nook, your battery is getting low. please recharge...................."

any help here?

Try these steps:

  1. Remove battery
  2. Plug into wall adaptor with battery still out
  3. Wait till it boots, it will do this by itself (with in 30 seconds)
  4. Reinsert battery with it still plugged in
  5. Let it charge till light goes out.

usually i keep it in airplane mode and only ever take it off for thirty minutes or so.  the past two days i have left it in 3G mode and put it back into airplane mode during one of my lectures and it froze.  Maybe this is because the wifi on campus is protected by VPN?  I don't know but at first i was like crap... then i was like I know how to fix this :-)

Re: Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

Ok this worked, I guess I just didn't do it in the right order.  This is beyond aggravating though I love being able to download books to this ereader.  Is there a fix in the works for this? If this happens to often I would think that this one needs to be returned. If this WAS a computer it would be going back to where I bought it.  I really expect no less service from B & N. Perhaps I got to early an addition? or quality control needs quality control?  I am willing to stick with this and try to work the bugs out if they are being worked on but I do not like that we are being used as guinea pigs if this is the case. I have put up with that enough from a certain big company who sends out a product just to get it out there and then worries about the bugs later.  I am tired of shoddy products. I would love my ereader to work smoothly and be the great product it could be. Please work hard to get this fixed SOON. Thank you for responding quickly.

Thank you

Re: Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

My nook is frozen in the on position. It is fully charged since I charged it last night and used it this morning.  I came home from work tonight and it still has the screen saver on it and it will not go off even when I remove the battery.  What do I do?  This is very frustrating since I have loved it up until now.  Any help would be appreciated!

Read post number 12 in this thread.

But before you do that, you might just plug it in for an hour and see what happens.

Re: Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

And remember that when the screen does not change, that does not mean it is frozen!

The eInk display is almost like paper, once something is drawn on it the image just stays there and never changes even if - or especially if - you remove the battery and it has no power. Just like an image on paper just sits there.

You need electricity only to change what's on the screen. So if the battery is dead, it will look like it's still on and "frozen", even though it's not. It just needs to charge.

Also, hook it up to your computer via USB and see if you can debug it.  I did and have not froze up since

Re: Nook Freezing Up - What I've Learned

Thank you for that information. I didn't know that and it confused me when I took the battery out and it was still on the screen. I will remember that next time.  Have a good day.
