Nook Missing Pages

I just got a Nook for my birthday. I loaded a couple of books on it and everything seemed to be working great.

As I started reading one of my books, I noticed that only half the page had text on it. No big deal, I thought, maybe it's the end of the chapter. When I turned the page, it was blank. Ok... Turned the page again. Blank. This happened for about 15 pages, before text showed up, and it was in the middle of chapter 6! (The last paragraph I read was at the start of chapter 1!).

So I checked the PDF file on my computer, to see if something was wrong with the file. Nothing was, all the pages were there. I plugged my Nook into my computer, and checked the file that way. It was fine. But once I unplug my Nook, and continue reading, a huge amount of pages seem to be missing.

I investigated and seemed to find that a lot of other people were having the same problem and that changing the font size would be a temporary fix. I tried this, and it didn't work. I am still missing pages! Anyone else having this problem?? Or know how to fix it! I heard that there was supposed to be an update to fix the problem, but my Nook came with the newest software! Help please! I really love my Nook so far, except for this one problem!!

Re: Nook Missing Pages

I've noticed that the font size affects the pagination (i.e., size does matter...).

And I've found funkiness with blank pages no matter what font size is used.  Just the nature of eBooks, I suppose...

Note: I read EPUB format books exclusively. If I understand you correctly, you are referring to PDF documents.  PDFs are notoriously font/pagination quirky.  But as I said my experience is 99.99% with EPUB, and my opinions on PDFs are essentially hearsay...

But I opine anyway... :smileywink:

@Ryuki

Welcome!  :smileyhappy:

There's probably nothing wrong with your Nook.  Nook had trouble with many PDFs.  This problem isn't limited to Nook, but common to most small-screen eReaders, including (according to reports) Kindle.  There's not much you can do with a PDF that doesn't fit your Nook except experiment with font sizes.

Nook is optimized for EPUBS and PDBs, and you should try to select those formats whenever you have a choice.

Re: Nook Missing Pages

Remember that the Nook includes ADOBE's mobile reader code.  And so do many other readers.  And Adobe is the creater of the PDF format.

It is almost certainly Adobe that has to correct these mistake in their code.  The rendition will never be as good as what a device (pc, etc) which can display one whole page, but it could certainly be better.

Pdfs are not ideal for small screen ereaders. I've had pdfs from the library that had several blank pages inserted every few pages and others that had about two lines of text on every page. Not unreadable, but slightly (okay more than slightly) annoying. I've never had one completely missing text but I've heard of it happening. If playing with the font sizes doesn't help, there's not much you can do. If the pdf doesn't have drm (copy protection) you can put it in a program like calibre and convert it to an epub and see if that fixes it.

Why don't you provide enough information for people to have some oportunity to help you? What sort of content is in that troublesome PDF? What software originaly created the content? What file format(s) was the file originaly saved in? If the file (or content embeded in or linked into the file) was originaly stored in some other format what software was used to convert it into a PDF? Is the text content a continuous stream of text or does it contain formating like multiple columns, tables or sidebars?

The e-Ink readers were designed to be used for text material like novels and biographies. Your expectation might excede the developer's intention for those models.

Re: Nook Missing Pages

Which? The expectation for access to more than 1GB of the ADVERTISED 16GB of the device?

I am pissed off 1/10 at the inability to read PDF files efficiently.

and 10/10 about the limited access to storage space.

Even WITH the offered reformatting service you now get....about 7 out of the 16 advertised GB...Yay!!! ...wait no that still sucks.

My expectations were only of what was advertised to me by the marketing thugs.

It's on Adobe to fix the issues with readability of PDF files. It's on B&N to actually provide to their customers what they advertise. You guys even had the nerve to delete a comment of mine addressing the storage issue on a social media page.

Oh, I see, you're talking about a different NOOK. This forum is for the original NOOK, the one with a big B&W screen and a smaller color touchscreen below it — see the picture at the top of these postings. This discussion is about that model. You need to find the forum for the NOOK model (color, tablet, whatever) that you're using.
