Actually, downloading books that were purchased online uses the wifi feature, as does page syncing, so no, they couldn't link the wifi to the shop without crippling functionality.
That said, I do think they removed the browser to increase battery life.

So does going into your settings and trying to change any of your social settings.

Yep, got the dreaded frozen screen this morning
Tried all the previous suggestions in this thread. Nothing.... Only had it for a week, so back to the store with it. At least my husband got to read two good books on it during his vacation
I think I'll get my money back and wait till they get the bugs worked out first before purchasing a new one.

Ok, as a last ditch effort, I called CS. Very helpful. Got the nook to unfreeze. Turns out the battery was completely drained. However, the battery was at 100% last night before I went to bed. I asked him if this was common and he said no. So, I am going to return it and exchange it for a new one. My husband really does love his reader, so maybe this one was just defective.

i had the same problem with my simple touch. so i took it back to the store. they talked to tech support, who couldn't fix it. i told them to give me a new one IN STORE THAT DAY or give me my money back. they gave me a new one. not 3 days after i started using the new one, it started doing the same thing. i found that if i turn it completely off every other day or so, it doesn't do it. until today. so, i reset it. again. i'm debating on whether i should go get ANOTHER one or just keep resetting. surely, that can't be good for it, though.

Get a new one. That's a lot of hassle to put up with and it shouldn't need all those resets.

Charge your nook for a few minutes first and try to reset it after that. e-ink technology don't need power to display the screen saver image.
If the batery is completly drained you will see the screen saver image but you will not be able to start it or reset it.

My Nook Simple Touch is completely frozen. Nothing seems to wake it up. Useless pressing the power button for 20, 30, 60 sec, or several times. Useless conecting it to the pc or the charger. No matter what I do it is still frozen.
Since I'm currently in Italy it's not the case to ship it back to B&N for repair.
I have read in several sites that removing the battery is the solution for most cases like mine. I just can't figure how to remove the back cover of my NEW Nook, all instructions are for the older Nook reader.
Does anyone know the proper way to do this?
Thanks in advance

I've just encountered the same problem. I found that the battery had been completely flattered while connect via to my PC via USB. I was able to recharge it by connecting it directly to the mains power supply. I've seen this problem before on other devices that can charge via USB. Not sure why.

Just so everyone is clear: The battery of the NOOK Simple Touch Reader (aka N2E, or just NOOK) is NOT user serviceable. Removing the back covering and messing with the battery WILL VOID your warranty.
All correct references online should be clear that self-servicing the battery is only an option on the N1E.

Not all USB ports put out full-power. Many are low-power and many are NO power (data only).
Any port connected to a hub is no-power unless you have an additional power adapter on it.
Search ebay or (gasp) Amazon for "USB hub" and you'll find some that have power cords and some that don't. Sadly, not all the ports on your computer are guarenteed to be powered. It sounds like you hooked up to one that wasn't; that not only didn't give you any juice, it made your Nook stay VERY awake and drain its own battery.

I am having the same issue. I had not used my nook in a few weeks but decided to use it to catch up on some of my subscriptions before bedtime. It wouldn't unlock. I plugged it in and it displayed that I had 68% charge left. I left it plugged in over night anyways. Next morning I attempted it again. Nothing happened. I then pressed the button in the back and got a prompt 'cancel' or 'power off'. I pressed 'power off' and got no response ('cancel did not respond either). In other words, the entire screen is not responding at all. I then pressed the button and kept it held down until the unit restarted (this was done several times). The screen is still unresponsive. Obviously, the device is less than a year old. I am honestly very disappointed. Which is my best recourse, contact Barnes and Noble by phone or do I go to their store?

Are you running firmware 1.1.? If not, try to do a manual update to 1.1. The 1.1 firmware seems to have solved the freezing problem, and improves the screen.

How can I find out what version I am running if the system is locked and all I get is a screen saver? How can I do an update with a locked system?

If you connect the Nook to your PC, does it show up as a drive letter? If yes, download the firmware 1.1 update, copy it to your Nook, than restart the Nook. That should start the update.

I found the solution!! Apparently the Nook Touch is not a touch screen. It's an infrared screen. It positions your finger on the screen from the edge of the reader screen.
The solution is to wipe the plastic edge around the reader screen very carefuly. It is very sensitive to dust. I thoroughly wiped mine (I used it at the beach alot) and now works perfectly. To test it, I placed a piece of paper on one side between the reader screen and the edge of the nook and it disables it.
Clean the outer edge thoroughly and carefully and it will work!!

my screen froze today too. i had it all ready to go for a plane ride from JFK to LAX, no dice. i've tried numerous power techniques (PC, wall outlet) though i'm not sure how that will help. the status light shows green when i plug it in, does that mean anything? from what i'm seeing online, it appears there is nothing to do but bring it in and have them look at it. what a bust!

I have had my Simple Touch first edition a long time - since it was first released, but had not used it for a while (several weeks). When I tried to turn it on it power up, the screensaver image wouldn't even flicker. It would not reset either. I found this thread and almost decided that it was just no good. I tried charging it overnight several times. When I plugged the charger into the port at the bottom of the nook the light would come on and immediately turn green. I tried to connect it to my PC to see if I could see the files from my computer (in case only the screen was dead). Nope - The PC showed a USB device connecting then immediately disconnecting over and over. I finally tried to plug the charger from my NookColor into it, but it didn't fit. THEN I plugged the simple touch's charger back into it and the plug slid in just a little further. Immediately "The battery is too low to power on." message appeared. Apparently the mini USB plug (or whatever it is) can be plugged in enough to light up the lights but not enough to actually charge the battery. Once I got the plug to seat properly it charged just fine and has been working ever since. Hopefully this helps someone else. Wiggle the plug a little bit when you push it into the bottom of the Touch and make sure it goes in all the way.
