Nook Simple Touch dictionary situation

[ Edited ]

Hello,

I've read multiple threads mentioning poor built-in dictionary quality, and I'd like to know what's the situation right now.

Have there been any improvements so far, is the dictionary usable currently? Can user look up a word not listed on page?

English is not my native language so the dictionary is very important for me.

Thanks.

Skyer,

Like you, English is not my maternal language, so I depend on a dictionary a lot.  The visual quality of the dictionary has changed in the NST Glow.  It's easier to read the definitions of the words,  because in the NST dictionary, words that comprise the definition are to close to each other, thus giving the reader a hard time when reading them.

The NST Glowlight has an improved version of the same dictionary.  It's much easier to read the definitions,  However, it still fails to define hyphenated words.

I hope this helps.

Re: Nook Simple Touch dictionary situation

Thank you for your answer,

is there any specific source for the words in dictionary? I mean, I heard that the dictionary has circular definitions (eg. prevailing: in state of being prevalent). When it comes to the explanation of words themselves, is it comprehensible?

@Skyer,

Some of the definitions are very comprehensible; others on the other hand, are as you classified them in your previous email somewhat circular or vague.  The dictionary on the Nook Tablet is more complete and gives the reader the opportunity to type in on the bottom of the dictionary entry a different word and it presents you with the meaning of the new word you are inquiring about.

The dictionary on the NSTGL is easier to read because the words do not run into each other forming one "big happy word" that sometimes is not so easy to make out.

I hope this helps.
