Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

Re: Nook Won't Wake/Frozen

That trick with removing the battery, plugging in the charger and then re-installing the battery worked for me. It had frozen up, although it was "off" for a few days and didn't seem to want to hold a charge.

Thanks for the suggestion. Its working fine now.

Re: Nook Won't Wake/Frozen

So here's a slight twist...

Got the standard "Press the power button to wake up Nook" screen, but removing the battery unplugged, plugging it in and pressing the power button does NOT reboot it.  The power light does seem to respond to the power button (i.e. when it's orange and you press the power button for a little while the light does go off, pressing the button again make it orange again).

Any ideas on an uber-reset or is this a dead, dead nook?

Thanks!

Re: Nook Won't Wake/Frozen

@JoannaH,

Do not charge the NOOK with the battery removed.

Please follow these instructions...

1)      Remove NOOK back plate to expose battery.  To do this, find the tab on the bottom of your NOOK, near the Micro-USB slot. Gently pull away the back-plate from your NOOK until the back plate is fully removed.  A click will be heard indicating the back plate has been properly separated from the device.

2)      Upon proper removal of back plate, the battery will be exposed. The following step will have you remove the screw which holds the battery in place. Using the specified screwdriver, loosen the battery securing screw which holds the battery in place (Counter-clockwise to loosen). Continue loosening until screw can be completely removed.

Caution: The battery securing screw is very small and can be easily lost, proper lighting and a flat clean surface is recommended.

3)      Remove the battery from the NOOK for 15-30 minutes.

4)      Once the battery is removed, hold the power button down for 45-60 seconds.  This ensures the NOOK will receive a final shutdown command and discharges all residual power.

5)      After 15-30 minutes has elapsed re-insert battery into NOOK and re-install battery securing screw.

6)      At this point you should fully charge your NOOK using your NOOK USB and charger with any standard AC wall outlet.  Charging can take up to 4 hours so be patient. At some point in the charging process the charging LED should illuminate and your E-Ink display may cycle on and off.

Upon successful completion of this procedure your NOOK should be returned to a normal working status. If a “?” is displayed in the battery icon, it is recommended you insert a different NOOK battery momentarily then re-insert the original battery to clear the “?.”

Re: Nook Won't Wake/Frozen

Thanks for the prompt response.

I followed the instructions verbatim, and unfortunately no change.  I did notice that even when I left the nook with the orange light on and connected to the AC, that eventually the light went off.

There is absolutely no change on the screen.

Do you have any more suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Nook Won't Wake/Frozen

Thanks for the reply, Michael.  I followed your advice but had to take an additional step.  After removing and replacing the battery I plugged the unit in to charge.  The LED light came on.  After about 3 hours the light went off and the unit said it was starting up.  I thought it must be ready to go, but it wasn't.  Despite the fact that it had been plugged in for 3 hours the battery was showing very little charge.  I left it plugged in and the LED light came on again.  After another 3 hours the light went off and the battery showed a full charge.  It seems to be working normally now, but I would like to know what I can do to prevent this from happening again.  Any thoughts?

Re: Is B&N Going to do anything about these defective Nooks?

I'm with you on defective nooks.  I was without mine for two months, before they finally sent me another one(refurbished).  Did all the tricks, got a new power cord, new battery, nothing worked.  I am just waiting for this one to do the same thing.

Re: Nook Won't Wake/Frozen

Thank you so much-this worked for me. I have been struggling with this for over a week and thought it was just me & my propensity for having a difficult time with technology. I surprised my kids by buying a Nook and showing it off for a few days. Then suddenly my home page was frozen and I think my kids thought it was me jinxing any device I touch. Anyway, it is working and I thank you!

Re: Nook Won't Wake/Frozen

Okay, I've been having this issue all week. When I'm reading on my Nook every few pages it will freeze. The buttons will still work (the little n button and the power button) but the touch screen is completely unresponsive. If I hold the power button long enough it'll eventually restart, though it shows my spot in the book as several pages behind where I actually stopped. But this is happening so often that it's becoming extremely annoying. I have to restart it dozens of times just to get through a few chapters. I probably average at least three restarts per chapter.

I thought I would try the other method of taking the battery out instead of just holding the power button, thinking maybe a complete reboot would help. My problem is that I can't get the backplate off. I have the Nook Simple Touch, but I don't see any tab at the bottom. I tried pulling from where the power cord plugs in, but it hasn't budged. Is there any other advice you can give me for getting the backplate off?

The NOOK Simple Touch's battery was designed to not be user replaceable. There is no official way for you to get the backplate off. Your N2E should not be having those problems. If you can, take it into a B&N store and have them look at it or call customer support. It sounds Ike you need a replacement.

Re: Is B&N Going to do anything about these defective Nooks?

Jesus, Mary, Joseph & the Tweleve Apostles! For a fix that is SOOOO simple (removing/reinstalling the back cvr/battery) why get so angry and demand a class action? I understand the frustration with all things computer-oriented, but c'mon... seriously?

The frozen nook fix is really not that big a deal at all and it takes all of about two seconds, far less time than it took to complain and threaten.

Keep it together people. It's just an electronic device.

Cheers!!

Re: Nook Won't Wake/Frozen

I have a Nook 1.4.3-- I love it most days. I have been getting a frozen screen more often. I have tried everything over the last few days. Comes to find out the Power Button is broken. My husband took it to a computer place to have it checked to see if it was receiving power.

It was get charged but the power button is broken so it will not restart if the battery run to low. Does anyone know how to start it without the power button since it seems that I can not get a new power button.

The worst part was I took it to The Springfield Store with the same problem... in June.  July 12th my year warranty ran out & this past week it has started more often... Very upset!

Does anyone know/have any ideas on what can be done?

Thanks

Re: Nook Won't Wake/Frozen

[ Edited ]

We have an original nook.  Hadn't used it in a year or more, wouldn't turn on.  The charge light would go on and stay on a while but problem was the battery was so dead it wouldn't charge.  Tried pulling out the battery overnight, leaving it plugged in overnight, etc etc.  Fixed it by looking on youtube on how to manually charge a battery - a video showed how to take a usb cable, cut the end off and expose the red and black wires, and I stuck the positive and negative where they could be held in place when pinched by the battery between battery and nook positive and negative contacts, it started booting up a minute or two later, and pulled them out once it started booting.  The whole time I also had it plugged in normally as well so it could continue chargng.  Kind of like a jump start.  Was very careful to not cross the wires across any other contacts.  And like I said, messed with all the other procedures in this and other forums to no avail, but this worked.  A new battery would have fixed it too i bet now, but this was free and battery lasted for 8 hours reading today.  (finally finished robopocalypse)
