I just received a replacement that is supposed to be a refurb. I can't tell that it has ever been used other than the box it was shipped in was definitely opened before.
Others claim to have received scratched up nooks but mine is how it should be and is the condition B&N promises on refurbs or pre-owned units. I hope you have the same experience I did.

Oh great... my Nook just started with the lines across, cannot see the print at all nor any other display on the reading panel. The touch screen at the bottom is just fine but cannot read anything at all above.
So what I get from this thread is that my only choice will be to call and get a refurbished one?? I didn't pay $200+ to end up with a used Nook. ![]()

Sending a refurbished is a very common practice. After all, if they took your current nook, repaired it, then sent it back to you...it too would be classified as 'refurbished.'
Refurbished simply means something that has been returned (for whatever reason) and then gone over, and any defects fixed and it is then certified to meet all factory specifications. In other words, fully tested and working.
Personally...I actually prefer refurbished when I can get it. usually cheaper cost, but also, you KNOW it's been gone thru and and anything wrong is fixed. If there was something not quite right with it from the assembly line (loose part, defective part, etc.)...that's been fixed!
The chances of it needed fixed again...are typically VERY small.
And, in addition, since they dont' have to immediately fix YOUR nook, the turn around time is much, much faster.
Refurbished units are NOT defective units. They are every bit as good as a brand-new, off the assembly line, never touched by human hands units....and in my opinion, better than those brand new units.

@hi_hi_there
YOURS is a USED nook!
So whatever it is you spent....you NOW have a USED nook.
Used by you, yes, but it is used never the less.
See my other reply in this thread. In my mind, a refurbished nook is actually better than a brand new, off the assembly line, never touched by human hands nook.

Unfortunatly, several people have posted in many threads that this is not always the case. Scratches and cracks have been found and also some have had non-functioning wifi etc.
So look over your replacement carefully. It should be refurbed to nearly new appearance, zero defects, cracks, or scratches and 100% functional.

The following is what B&N has to say about pre-owned or refurbished units they provide;
Cosmetics:
Display free of cracks and scratches (like NEW)
Front panel/bezel free of cracks, dents, pitting and scratching (like NEW)
Back panel free of cracks and scratches
Functions:
Power On test
Battery monitor check
Charging verification
Initiate hard reset
Menu function test
Factory settings verification
EBook shopping test
Wireless connectivity verification
Quick Start Guide check
Display quality check
Relish system to factory settings
If you receive a pre-owned unit that fails to meet any of the above conditions it is grounds for requesting another replacement.
I have seen nothing on these boards indicating a wide spread tendency to ship pre-owned units in any other condition. Just like a production run for newly boxed units, defective units can slip through undetected. That however is not the norm.

Not going to argue the obvious that if I purchased something it was NEW to start and if it malfunctioned within a short while then it was a lemon and therefore I should not be expected to accept a used however refurbished from the factory.
What some may not realize is that if your Nook malfunctioned as mine did within an unreasonably short time that you should NOT call the help phone number but return the item to the store.
I returned mine to the store and received a brand new Nook.
I was happy with this arrangement.
What I thought was a little odd was that I offered to pay the difference and buy a Nook Touch, something the sales person would not allow. You'd think they'd want the sale and the money but I suppose they had to get rid of the old Nooks somehow. Too bad.

You are so lucky it is still under warranty! I am livid!
This has happened to my second Nook. This is a replacement Nook. Warranty on original Nook is expired. Original Nook lasted 8 months and was replaced for a crack in the outer case. Replacement Nook broken at age five months! There are grey, black, and white stripes of varying size running horizontally and vertically across the screen making the screen unreadable.
Technical support and customers service supervisor said they could not help me, as original Nook warranty is expired. I cannot believe Barnes and Noble will not stand behind this faulty device. A Nook should last longer than five months, especially at a price of $259.
I will no longer support Barnes and Noble if this situation is not remedied. It is unethical business practices to sell a product that is so faulty and not stand by replacements for consumers. Warranties of early Nooks should be extended upon replacements.
I am telling everyone not to buy Nook or shop at B & N.

Do you not agree a Nook should last longer than five months?

I was aware of the terms and conditions I agreed to upon purchase. I also did my research and bough a 3 year warranty from square trade.

@mikayla: so after telling us that B&N did honor the warranty and replaced your nook you turn around and call them out for not extending your warranty as some sort of gift to you?
Why should you get more than one year? Nobody else does.
Where do I apply to be in the cool kids group that gets extra warranty life for free?

Sure, but you got a 1 year warranty, and 13 months (more than 1 year) of nook use, regardless of the "number" of devices you were provided with. If you wanted protection for more than the standard 1 year manufacturers' warranty (which extends from your original date of purchase), you should have bought the extended warranty from B&N or square trade.
Sh*t happens. by not buying the extended warranty, you assume the risk of anything that happens to your nook beginning on day 366 of your purchase.
If your second nook had only lasted 3 months, it would have been covered, because you would have only been 11 months into your warranty.
This is how every standard warranty for every piece of electronic equipment in the history of electronics has worked. Sometimes manufacturers will go above and beyond, but that's essentially out of the goodness of their hearts.

The original Nook was preordered when the device was new. There was not an extended warranty offered with the original devices.
My experience with Apple is very different. Even outside warranty, a computer or iphone has been replaced or repaired at no charge when a device is obviously a lemon.

(a) Yes there was - you had to buy it at the same time as the device (rather than within 30 days as is currently available).
(b) even if there wasn't, you could have gotten a warranty through a third party like square trade. That's what I did, since I got my nook as a gift and I didn't want my dad to rack up the extra expense of the extended warranty when he pre-ordered it in November 09. With me standing with him at the B&N. Where they explicitly offered us the option to get the extended warranty at the time.

Bull.
I ordered nook on the first day of availability for pre-orders. It shipped 11/30/2009, and arrived on 12/2/2009.
I ordered an extended warranty on the nook at the same time. Extended warranties were available EVEN BEFORE the first nook shipped.
Don't come here posting that there was no extended warranty on the original nook.

@mikayla9
Have you tried a factory fallback?
Hold the power button down until the unit is off. Turn the unit back on. As soon as the screen flickers starting up, hold the power button down until it shuts off. Repeat this for a total of 6 times. On the last power up it will format the user partition and re-install the original firmware version. If you have anything on the nook you need to save, copy it to your computer before starting this process.
I wouldn't place bets it will fix your issue but its something to try.
