Just purchased a Nook Color for my daughter for Christmas and It will not connect to our wireless router. We have a WRT54G and it's set on WEP. The Nook obtains the address and it shows a strong connection, then it states "Remembered, secured with WEP", but the Wi-Fi is Unsuccessful. Sooo I put the password in and it just does the same thing... Can anybody help?
BTW it successfully connected at B&N and at her friends house.

Hi, I have a Linksys WRT54G working fine with my Nook, and I am using stronger security than your WEP, and it's working fine so rest assured it's not the router. Are you the one who set up your home network and you know how to manage the settings on it? Do you know if it has a Mac filter in place for security?

The MAC filter is on Disable. Does it matter how many characters my WEP key password is? It's currenlty 10-numbers? Believe me, I've tried everything, even changed the router to it's default settings.

I am not familiar with how WEP works since I've been using WPA2 for so many years, but I *think* I read somewhere on these forums that with Nook you have to use the 26 HEX key instead of the 10, but I cannot swear to that. Maybe someone else more familiar with using WEP with Nook will know.

That's one thing I haven't tried. If I change my router to "128 bit 26 Hex digits" I'll need to reconnect my laptop with a new password, is there anything else that might change that I sould know about before I make the change? Not router literate...LOL...

No, you should be fine, just reconnect your laptop and any other units that access the wireless router with the new passcode. You may want to think about switching over to WPA or WPA2 instead of WEP though, if all your units will accept it. WEP is so insecure and can easily be broken. It's only a tiny half step above not having any security at all. Good luck!

I have WEP security on my wireless access point and use 128 bit encryption. My nook (and my daughter's NookColor) connect fine to the wi-fi network. I did use the 26 hex digit passcode when setting up the nooks.
All I can suggest to you is to make sure that you are entering your current hex passcode correctly - it should be a string of hexadecimal characters. I believe in your previous post you mentioned that you had entered 10 digits as the password but that they were ALL numbers. I don't think that this is correct. I'm pretty sure that the passcode will be a combination of letters and numbers. Were you perhaps entering the WEP passphrase rather than the passcode?? Worth checking.
If that doesn't work I'd reboot your router and try again. If that STILL doesn't work then try the 128 bit encryption and entering the 26 character hex passcode. That should work !! ![]()
Good luck . . . . Let us know if it works . . . .

OK, I changed the WEP to 128 bit 26 Hex digits and it's still not working. ughhh... can't be that complicated.

Yes, it can be that complicated. Secure Wi-Fi isn't for the faint of heart. ![]()
See if this information about a much earlier version of that router helps: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-Techni
Some things to make sure of: do not select Shared-Key Authentication. It should either be Open or Auto.
Turn off MAC Filtering if it's on, or else add your NOOK to the list of approved MACs. It's surprising how many people tell their router to only work with the devices it already knows about, then get upset when the router won't work with their new NOOK.

Cross referenced the Configuration. It's set up exactly how it states and I'm using WEP. I have not tried WPA TKIP, do you think this would make a difference?

My router firmware is V1. Do you think I should update it?

Updating the router software won't matter for this purpose, it just gives you more options for functionality, like access restrictions.
Did you go into the wifi settings on the Nook and hit the "forget" button on your network? Do that and then try accessing again with the hex digits.

It depends on the routers age, look at the hardware revision on the case and visit Linksys's website.
They have fixed a lot of firmware issues over the lifetime of that product. I know I had to update the firmware in my WAP54G to get it to run correctly with my Nook Classic and my Droid X.
That product has been in production so long that Cisco actually changed the operating system at one time from Linux to I believe Wind River.

Hi! I'm back! LOL before I update my firmware which probabley needs to be done because my Linksys was purchased in 2006 or... I'll wait until my new router comes in from Comcast...
Does it matter if the Security - Block Anonymous Internet Request is checked?
BTW - Thanks for all your help! I love the product and if I can get it to connect at home I might get one for myself, LOL

On your pc, open a web browser and use 192.168.1.1 to access your WRT54G - there you can see all the settings. I'm using one with WPA Personal - TKIP without problems.

Nope. Changed my WEP to WPA and it's still not connecting. Gotta be my router. I ordered a new one from Comcast to replace the Linksys. Once I have the new router connected I will let "everyone" know what the status of my connection is.
THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HELPED ME OUT!! Happy Holiday's, from a tired Mom. ![]()
