I just received my Nook last week. I see that others are downloading books from libraries using Overdrive. I've downloaded a few from my local library but my Nook doesn't show them in my library. I've sideloaded them into my documents but they do not show. They are EPUB books but when they are downloaded from the website using Overdrive it changes the file to a ASCM file. How is it working for others?
Also, I listen to alot of audio books. Same problem as above...they are MP3 files when I download them from the library website but when it comes through Overdrive it changes the file to a ODM or WMA file. This is very frustrating because these dont' seem to be acknowledge by the Nook either. Can someone tell me how to get around this?
Question - does the page turning not work when you have the text on large/extra large? I had to change my font to a smaller size to get the swipe page turning feature to work.
One other problem.....I recently downloaded books from the barnes and noble site, some loaded automatically to my Nook but others did not. I also find this frustrating. I don't want to have to side load them, they should automatically go to my Nook. Am I the only one with troubles? Along this same lines, some times when i've moved books they are there one day and gone the next.
Could you some guidance

OK. First of all, the ASCM file is NOT the book. It is a secure link back to the library's server that, when you double click on it or drag it to Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), allows ADE to download the actual, secured, book from the library. You need to do this first before any book will be readable on ANY device, including your computer. I imagine the same problem is occurring with the audio files.
Overdrive is the library e-book management system, but you need to load ADE onto your computer before you can actually read any books. I don't know which library system you use, but the NY Public Library has video tutorials on how Overdrive/ADE work.
Then, do a search on these forums for "Adobe Digital Editions" or ADE - there are already a LOT of people discussing how to load books from ADE on to your nook (ADE can cause some problems in itself, because it attempts to catalog your entire nook library, not just the stuff that it loads on, so some folks have found "alternative" ways of loading ADE books onto their nooks to avoid this. But you still need to initially download the book to your computer via ADE).

And don't forget to Authorize the nook using ADE.
Start ADE FIRST on your pc, THEN plug in the nook and it will find it and offer an Authorize option.
Earlier versions of nook software had some problems with ADE. These may be worked out now.
Haven't tried lately.

I know that ASCM is not the book, but I wasn't sure how to retreive the book from the download. We have ADE on our computer and I can read the books on there. I will search the forums for the other postings and see what others are saying.
I will play around with it some more. Thanks.

If your library is like mine, and all the other libraries I've ever borrowed e-books from, you do NOT "save" the file to your computer. Instead, click on the "open" button when the dialogue comes up. This will open up ADE and download the file to your computer. You can then transfer it onto your nook once it's done downloading. This assumes, of course, that you've taken all the other steps others have outlined below (installed ADE, authorized your computer, authorized your nook).

You just move the book to your nook from inside ADE. Just drag it to the nook icon.

See that is the part that failed in Prior versions of the nook OS. ADE would put the books where they could not be found.
I was hoping someone would test it and report back if this really works now in 1.2.0. I'd do it myself, except my lame county library only has the "Dummy" series of eBooks. (Which is mind numbing, because dummys would never figure out ADE).

Then I guess they would need the 'dummy' book first ![]()
Ok, so if ADE is up on the screen and I plug in my Nook....the Nook will automatically know to find it? I will try this later this afternoon and see what happens.
And so, I open instead of saving. I'll try that too.
How does this work with the audio library files seeing that it is not ADE? Can I move them from the WMA once they are downloaded?
Thanks to everyone for the imput!

Yes, it works in the current version of the nook software. I've done it.
The nook will not automatically detect the book in ADE. You have to manually drop and drag it from ADE to the nook icon. Plug in your nook BEFORE you open ADE. That way when ADE launches, your nook will show on the left hand side.

Ice-I coincidentally (finally!) got off the wait list for a book I was waiting for this morning from the NYPL, so i downloaded it. While I still remove B&N content from my nook prior to opening ADE (to avoid the conflict problems I was having with ADE trying to "register" all my non-ADE content - don't know if this has been fixed and don't want to risk screwing up my library again to find out!), I was able to drag and drop the library book with no problems. I'm already on page 60. Once I'm done with this book, I might try and download something that's available that I don't actually want to read to see if my other problems have been fixed (a new version of ADE was released recently as well).

Only 1.1.0 had trouble with books being put into the Digital Editions folder when dragging books with ADE to the Nook icon. Release before that, 1.1.1 and 1.2.0 all work without other interventions. Just authorize the Nook one time with ADE (doesn't need to be done again) and drag the book within ADE to the Nook icon.

I have read the above posted ways to get ODM books from my local lib loaded on my nook, but the issue is, I don't have a PC with internet access to load them on before I upload them to my nook. I can download them from the lib with my nook but how can I open them using just the nook's online capabilities without the use of another device?

You have to download them to a computer first and then manually transfer them to your nook using the usb cable. You need to use Adobe Digital Editions for e-books and the Overdirve Media Console for audio books.
