Opening Books

I've been having a problem opening two books on my Nook, The Unsuspecting Mage and The Thief. When I try to open either book the screen says opening your book and then just sit there. I let it sit for thirty minutes before turning it off, so I know its not just the Nook being slow. Another thing I would like to add is that there's no "loading" bar at the bottom screen, like with other books. Thanks for your help in advance .

Re: Opening Books

There are numerous threads on books that won't open and what to do.  The most common suggestion is to archive the book, check for new content, unarchive the book, check for new content and try to open it again.

Having gone through that multiple times with the one book I could not open I finally downloaded it to my computer, sideloaded it to my documents and read it from there.  Much less hassle and the procedure I intend to use should I have another book that will not open.

I was deeply disappointed that the 1.3 update didn't solve this problem; I have one BN purchased book "The Truth" by Pratchett, which will only open if moved to My Documents. The problem with this is if you d/l a book, have it fail to open, and don't have the means handy to move the file.

And yes, I tried every suggested solution without success; the problem has not only persisted after the update, but on a just received replacement nood (right button crack - all the way through the outer frame) with the new update performed.

Then perhaps the problem is the book, not the Nook?  If it isn't working on two separate Nooks, then it would seem likely that it is a problem with the book.

Have you contacted CS and asked to load the book on a Nook and try it?  They did that for me with a book that I had purchased, but only got the sample.  Said they were having the same problem and refunded my money on the book.

[ Edited ]

It may well be the problem that the NOOK has with certain books positioning to certain pages that it does not display.

Can be got around by opening a book with the PC/MAC desktop ereader and moving to a different page such as chapter 2.  Make sure that desktop ereader syncs with the B&N server.  There is a icon on the destop ereader my libary page (little circle with counter clockwise arrows).  Than go to the nook and "check for new B&N content".  There are other work arounds but this one gets the book to open and behave as it was suppose to on the NOOK.

For those who swear they have never seen the bug, experiment with the free Dracula that you should have on your bookshelf.  Open it on the pc/mac and move to the very first page.  Sync and you will find the Nook unable to open the book.

Re: Opening Books

I experienced the same problem with a book I bought from the B&N store.

After reading through the numerous posts here I tried the download and sideload solution and the book now opens fine under my documents.

I suspect if this problems persists with other books B&N will try to find a more universal solution in the next upgrade but I imagine it might have something to do with the book file which is provided from the various publishers. Maybe they can come up with some sort of compatibility/error check on each file as it is uploaded to the store?

Then again, maybe I am just way off base here and got lucky with this particular title when I sideloaded it! :smileysurprised:

Re: Opening Books

@Schiefy,

There is no reason for you to have to sideload an ebook from the B&N site.  Please PM me with the title(s) that you are having issues with which required sideloading and I will work this out for you.
