SSID not broadcast

Does the nook have trouble when the SSID is not broadcast?  The nook was able to find the wifi when the broadcast was on but when it was turned off it said that it was not in range.

Yes, although I believe that once you have connected and it should remember the network and find it, but to find it the first time, the  SSID has to be broadcasting.

Not necessarily . . . . My home wi-fi network does not broadcast its SSID.

When I first got my nook I let it search for nearby wi-fi signal and, as you would expect, it did not find my network.  I then choose "Other Hotspot" (last choice on the wi-fi hotspot list) and typed in my network's SSID, followed by it's security code.  It connected right away and has continued to connect ever since with no problems.

The two statements are not contradictory.  To FIND the network on its own the first time, the Nook needs the router to be broadcasting the SSID.

You can input the SSID and the password and it can connect a non-broadcasting hotspot, if there are no typos.

THIS.  Mine doesn't broadcast, and since I know the SSID and security settings I had no issues.

Re: SSID not broadcast

Yes, I have had that problem with my daughter's NOOK.  I set up the connection and temporarily turned on SSID broadcast to allow it to connect.  Once I turned broadcast back off, it disconnected.

Re: SSID not broadcast

I, too, can only get the nook to connect to my wireless network if I'm broadcasting.  Not cool.

Re: SSID not broadcast

I agree it wont connect if the SSID is not broadcast.  This needs to be fixed.  I'm sitting at the computer that controls the router so I've confirmed all the right codes.

Nope - not true.  My SSID is NOT broadcast and I can connect to my home network just fine with either my original nook or nookcolor.  All I have to do is type in my network's name along with th e type or encryption and passphrase and it connects with no problem.

So, for all the people who broadcasted their SSIDs and connected, and then stopped broadcasting and lost connection - Have you tried to manually type in the network name, encryption and passphrase to see if you can get a consistent connection that way?

Same here... SSID is NOT broadcast, and no problem connecting my N1E or NC. Just type in network name and encryption password... done.

Ditto - for my NC and N2E I've had no problem connecting (non broadcast SSID, MAC address filtering, and WPA2/TKIP password on an old Linksys WRT54GS).

Re: SSID not broadcast

i have a nook color, just updated to the new 1.4 version of the software, and i have an Apple Airport (within an Apple Time Machine devivce).

the wireless network i have configured my Airport to allow connections from various wireless devices has WPA2 encryption set and is also set to not broadcast the SSID of its configured wireless network.  this works fine with every other device i have, except the nook color.  but there is a work-around ...

the nook does require that it be able to "see" my wifi network's SSID in its scan of all nearby wireless networks, when configuring the nook color for wireless access to this non-broadcasting wireless network the first time.  so, yes, i did have to get into my wireless router's settings and have it broadcast the SSID for five minutes while i got my nook color to connect the first time.

then i disabled the broadcast of the wireless network SSID in my wireless router's settings again, but my nook color would not automatically connect, even though i'd let it connect once already.

what i then had to do on the nook is select "Other Network" from the nook color wifi settings screen and type in my non-broadcasting SSID name and security and password info again.

now it connects fine, over and over again.

its just with having to get into my wireless router's settings and enabled then disabled the SSID broadcast, after letting the nook connect, and then on the nook having to sortof do all that again, selecting Other Network from its wifi settings and inputting all the info again was a bit of a hassle.  and then of course you end up with the nook color listing two SSIDs of the same name in its wifi list, one connected, one not connected, made the wifi list look confusing too.  of course deleting the one thats not connected clears that up, but its not an obvious or consistent user experience, especially for someone who isnt a network engineer and just wants to buy a book or get their email from this little device.

hopefully the nook folks iron this experience out in a future release for those of us who prefer to connect to non-broadcasting SSID type networks and/or expect that devices meant to connect to wireless networks have more over-all consistency in the experience.  i have lots of wireless stuff in this house and the nook is the only one that took two hours outta my life.

have a better one.

Re: SSID not broadcast

My wife was checking on a Japanese web site for support on this.  Someone recommended changing the channel on the wireless router.  I was having this problem for months, but when I changed the channel to 7, it connected immediately.
