Check the file name and make sure it has just .epub at the end. If you download books direct from the web site an extra extension is added which the 1.5 version of the software can't read. just remove the extra extension and leave the .epub and it should work.

I have a book on my nook that I wanted to put on my wife's nook. I downloaded the book from the B&N site to my computer and then loaded it onto her nook by copying it to the my documents folder on her nook. When I try to open it on her nook I do not get the credit card information prompt. Instead, I got a message saying "unsupported file type." The book won't open at all. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to remove it from my nook in order for it work on her?
Any help anyone could give would be great.
Thanks

That's exactly what the problem was. After I deleted the extraneous parts of the file name and just left the number and put in the .epub it worked perfectly.
Thanks.

I want to share books with my wiife but I can not determine which file is which title. The instructions are clear (and appreciated) except that I don't know which files to copy. The filenames on the Nook are numbers. How do you determine which file is which title? I am unable to find the answer to this question. B&N customer service said the numbers are the ISBN numbers but the various online ISBN finders do not recognize the NOOK filename numbers.

I look at the item details of the book. From your library, arrow down to the book you want, select ITEM DETAILS AND OPTIONS on the touch screen, change the view to DETAILS. I usually just write down the last 4-5 numbers of the EAN.
I believe you can see this on BN website too.

If you download Nook for PC and use that to download the books, then you will get a filename with the book title in it. For instance, if I download the book Medical Error, I get this with Nook for PC, medicalerror_9781426715495.epub, if I download it using the download option on the website, I get, 9781426715495_epub.v4.epub which then has to be fixed to remove the first period. So I just use Nook for PC to download the books, makes it a lot easier.

Is it possible to load the same book from ADE (borrowed from public library through OverDrive) so that BOTH Nooks can read the same book at the same time? I think my husband has finally decided to also purchase a Nook and I want to know all our options upfront. You have convinced me that we need to have TWO separate B & N accounts but only one ADE account. Thanks.

Yes, as long as both NOOKs are registered to the same ADE account.

I have a similar problem. I've tried reading the one nook/ two accounts thread, too. I'm still stuck.
For a gift, my mother bought me a nook book, not realizing it would go to her account, not just send her and email that she could forward to me with a link to "my" book. Ugh. She has no interest in ereaders and will not be reading this book, DRM or no.
With her credit card number and login for the bn.com site, I was able to download the book to my macintosh and I can read the book on my Barnes and Noble eReader on the mac. I had to enter the credit card number and then I was set.
But I want to read it on my nook!
I have tried removing the period between the isbn number and the version number: ISBN.v1.pdb becomes ISBNv1.pdb. When I put that on the color nook, the file stays grayed out.
When I change the file name to ISBNv1.epub, I get a message "Error dialog. Sorry, cannot open this book."
I cannot get the color nook to ask me for the credit card info so I can prove I have the right to this book. It's getting really frustrating, to say the least. What seems to work for sideloading if you are on a PC isn't working for me. So if anyone has suggestions, I'd be most grateful.
(Never mind this could all have been avoided if BN allowed "gifting" of ebooks.....)

Can you download NOOKStudy for Mac?
The problem is that NOOKColor doesn't read .pdbs and you can't just change the file extension from .pdb to .epub. The ereader app gets .pdbs. The NOOKStudy app will download .epubs and that book should transfer as described in this thread. You'll still need to unlock it with the credit card she used to purchase it, but it should work.

NookStudy has opened a whole 'nother can of worms.
I even went so far as to deactivate the registration I had, which took Adobe Digital Reader registration with it. Okay, a PITA, but not a problem.
Except when I tried to set up NookStudy under mom's account, the system is extremely unhappy with me. She doesn't HAVE an Adobe account. So I tried using mine. It doesn't like that either. It wants me to call Adobe to deactivate my computer.
Surely there is a way to link both of our BN accounts to the Adobe Digital account.....
Sigh. I just want to read the dang book. It shouldn't be this difficult.

Doug --
Great post. Now, a follow-up: How do I get my NOOKcolor to show me the picture for the cover, once a book has been side-loaded? I've transferred the book, and I can get to the thumbnail on the original device (Nook for Android), but I don't know where to put the thumbnail and/or what other steps to take so that the cover shows up as more than a grey rectangle w/text in my library.
I've tried co-locating the book & thumbnail in the same folder, and I've put the thumbnail in the ".docThumbs" folder and in myNOOKcolor\myfiles\.thumbnails". Failed so far to see the pretty cover in the library.
Thoughts?

Thanks for this helpful thread! I tried the instructions and it worked well from my pc to the nook. My sister owns a mac and the ebook file is grayed out and it said that it's unsupported when she tried to open it in her nook (in My Files folder). Help please...

If she has a NookColor than the file is probably a PDB file which is not supported. I would email it to her as an epub and have her sideload it.

Just a quick question:
If my wife and I both have Nooks on the same account, can we not just disable the "Remember My Page" (or whatever it is called feature) and read the same book at the same time with no problems? Especially, since we do not read out Nook Books on out phones or computers?

that, or keep the wifi off. But really as long as you don't press the go to last page read button then you shouldn't be relocated (that is of course if this is the N1E, I have no clue about the nook color

Yes you can. However, if one of you archives a book, it will get archived on both Nooks whenever you check for new content. And, both Nooks will get all the same books on each one, so as long as you have very similar reading tastes, there shouldn't be a problem, but if one of you likes SciFi and the other doesn't, you're both going to have SciFi books on your device.

It's already turned off by default.
You might want to look to the future, though. Maybe in five or ten years you'll want to read on a tablet.
Or (heaven forbid) you get divorced. Then "who gets custody of the e-books" can become an issue. The answer will usually come down to who is the quickest to change the account password to lock the other one out.
The advantages of sharing an account are relatively small, and the disadvantages are (In My Opinion) somewhat larger, especially when you look toward the future. But it's your decision.

Ok... so if we get seperat accounts and I share a book the way that is discussed in this original post(s), can we read it at the same time? For example, I've read Justin Cronin's The Passage, but when she reads it, I want to reread it. So, could I download a copy on my Mac, sideload it on her Nook, and then have us both read it at the same time on our seperate devices?
