One interesting thing that came out of my talk with them is the level of committment that B&N has for the Nook. You may or may not know that Amazon does not make the Kindle. They contract with another company to design it, manfucature it, and write all of the software for it (I know a few guys there too). But the Nook is being completely done in-house. B&N started a new division, staffed it and are doing the product themselves. These guys are Barnes and Noble employees. Not employees of some behind the scenes OEM.

Sorry, I don't believe for a minute that B&N manufactures the Nook in-house.

There are too many established electronic manufaturers where they could get this made offshore without any risky capitalization.  It would make horrible business sense for them to ramp up a development lab, a manufaturing plant, etc., when there are hundreds of experienced companies available.

Next you'll tell us they print the books they sell in their stores!

Re: Update update?

@Sunhawk- Thanks for all the information. I appreciate that you took time out of your day to pass on news to other people. You didn't have to do that, so thanks, it was very nice of you. You also seem very well informed, and its people like you we need around here.

Re: Update update?

Sunhawk, thanks hugely for going to the meeting and posting your report here.  I had really wanted to go to that meeting, as I knew about it  and was right by the store last night.  But I had another commitment at 8pm and didn't want to go to the Nook meeting and then have to leave early.  Now I'm sort of wishing that I had gone, so I'm extra glad you took the time to go and report back to us.

I can vouch for Sunhawk.  I was told about that meeting by a B&N employee at that store, and had it marked in my calendar.  Maybe I'll make it to the next meeting, since it sounds like they are pretty valuable.

Read, comprehend, reply

I never said anything about manufacturing. I said the development and testing is done by B&N employees.

Run along and get back to class. Recess is over and the adults are talking now.

Don't behave like a child **bleep**.  These are your words:

"But the Nook is being completely done in-house. "

That reads to me that you meant to say they manufacture it.

Just because you are on the Internet does not mean you can be a bully.  I neither insulted you or called you a liar.  I just said that I don't believe they build it.

Did they say anything about the problem with titles and authors from sources other than B&N?  I really don't care about the cover flow but I would love to be able to read my titles!  :smileywink:

And that is the point.

I realize the web is anonymous, but the way that others perceive you will be based on your actions.

I know about this because depending on my mood and how many hours of sleep I have had, I come across as ranging from about 12 up to about 70 years old.

But to put it more basic terms.

Is the iPhone internally developed? Yes

Is it manufactured by a third party? Yes

  • The iPad? Same
  • The Google Nexus One? Same
  • The Palm Pre? Same
  • Virtually every personal electronic device? Same ( a few companies like Sony do a lot of their own manufacturing, but less and less all of the time).
  • Most computers? Same

I work on a successful personal electronic device that uses an OS from Sun and is manufactured in the orient. But all of the development that makes it into a product is done in the US by my company.

Development does not equal manufacturing

Josh, this is nothing compared to some of the threads out there where someone is talking about shooting people, etc...  You know the thread, it has been reported often enough.  I would really appreciate it if you could at least delete the post where this person states they want to shoot my grandmother!

I've reported this over and over (via both the abuse link and PMs to you administrators), including to the powers that be in the ivory tower and nada.  I know many others have also reported this thread and others all due to a single poster.

Allegedly fixed. I didn't see it, but they said it is. I asked specifically 'cause I have the problem too.

I am sure that once this release actually ships, everybody will be a little less on edge.

Until we find out what its wrong with it that is.

But in the meantime, my post count is climbing quickly today.

FWIW I contacted Fictionwise about this as a Title of a book I purchased there wasn't being displayed properly. They informed me the Nook team was working on it and it should be resolved soon.

Someone should write a book called "The Nook Debacle:How Not to Bring a Product to Market" and distribute it on the Kindle.

Before you smash it up, send me a message. I'll take it off your hands. But since it's used, I won't pay more than $50.

As for your book idea, have you ever heard of a little product called Vista? Or, more recently, a company called Toyota?

S--t happens, products are buggy, problems crop up, and then get fixed. It happens all the time

One of the most frustrating pieces of hardware ever? Methinks thou dost protest too much. You obviously never had the pleasure of installing a scanner and needed an internal SCSI card. Or had your PC lock up because you didn't set the DIP switches correctly on your sound card. Or, heck, even tried refilling the plastic line on a weed whacker.

No, I don't work for B&N. I just refuse to stop being the only rational person I know.

The difference with your examples is they are all things that you have the power to fix yourself.  I can't do anything about this and I'm completely at the mercy of B&N putting out an update, and hoping that it actually fixes the problems.

As for it being the most frustrating experience....  I would say that switching between 4 or 5 different books and having to press the page turn button hundreds of times each time, several times a day, is probably one of the most frustrating things one can experience.

Re: Update update?

Sunhawk -

Thanks for the info.  Did they mention anything about the registration problems that so many people seem to be having?  This would be the problem where I'm unable to register my nook over Wifi, and I don't live in an AT&T area.

Note* before anyone provides "helpful" suggestions on how I can register my nook, I suggest you read the stickied thread at the top called "Registering your nook".... The entire thread.

B&N has a free downloadable book reader for your PC, iPod/iPhone, or Blackberry. Perhaps one of those will tide you over?

However, if you do decide to smash it, please get it on video. You'll be an instant YouTube celebrity!

Re: Update update?

I don't know what the people at BN's dev team are thinking but this is horrible. An eBook reader that can't bookmark? Seriously?! I dont know about everyone else but *I* dont read an entire book in one sitting.

Doug a Digital Supervisor told me that by 3am PST the update to fix this would be out. If not im returning this POS, canceling my membership and requesting a refund for all eBooks.

Say whatever you like, but IMO this is a critical problem.

Re: Update update?

Exit the book using the < symbol in the touch pad and you won't lose your book marks.

Also stop shutting it off.  Just sleep the book.

You never really have to set a book mark at all.  Just exit the book, and it remembers where you were in each book.  It is the shutting it totally off that is the problem.

Maybe it will be fixed tomorrow, maybe not.  They won't update ever single nook at once, rather they will roll it out gradually over a few days.

It should be fixed, but still there are hundreds of posts on this forum explaining this issue.

Re: Update update?

#1 it has to be shut off per the FAA at take off and landing.

#2 The battery eventually dies and the book is exited.

#3 I mainly use my USB port to charge, and this also exits the book.

So yea nice try but < isnt really a real world option.
