Re: Using the Nook for library books?

This is covered earlier in the post.

Close ADE.  Plug your NOOK into your computer.

Use windows Explorer to remove the following two folders:

 .adobe_digital_editions    <-- notice the "dot"

  Digital Editions

'

EJECT NOOK.  Plug it back in, reopen ADE.  Reauthorize NOOK in ADE.  Drag and drop.

The link in my signature covers the entire process in detail.

Re: Loading audio library books on the Nook?

I got my Nook at Christmas and have used it for B&N books and library books.  Before we made a long road trip in Jan. I loaded 2 (two) library books on  my nook.  A nice rep @ a B&N store helped me number the chapters, after I loaded it, because I couldn't tell the chapters apart.  Now, I'm ready for another 2 days driving & I cannot get the book to load from my computer to my Nook.  It is a MP3 file, just like before.  When I copy the book & paste it into the nook, it looks fine.  But when I eject the nook and open my documents, where it was before, it's nowhere to be found.

I've searched the blogs, & have put the book in the music file, where one said,  & also tried to put it in the audio book, where I thought I put it before.  Still no book shows.  HELP!!

THANK YOU!!!!!!

:smileyvery-happy:

This was exactly what I needed to do! I was very frustrated with only being able to read the New User Guide for the past few days! Though I am now seriously thinkning about a wireless router for home....  I asume having in-house WiFi would make the downloads from B&N easier?

If you have NOOK 3G, it shouldn't matter unless you're in an area with very limited ATT coverage.

If you have NOOK Wifi or NOOKColor, yes, having your own wireless will make your experience much, much easier.

Re: Using the Nook for library books?

Doug,  I have successfully downloaded a dozen books from my local library in the past few months.  Last week when I tried to download to my nook, I started ADE then plugged in the nook but the nook icon isn't visible on the left side. I went to the control panel and went to devices and hardware and the nook was there.  I'm not  sure what is going on.  I'd appreciate any advice, thanks.  Mike

I love being able to borrow ebooks from a library. There are a lot of books I'm interested in reading that I wouldn't necessarily want to keep when I'm done.

For anyone in New York State, the New York Public Library has a form online where you can get a library card mailed to you... and this lets you check books out from their ebook collection. They have a LOT of stuff, too. I think to check out physical books you have to get the card activated in person, but I didn't do that (I live 4 hours away from NYC) and I can still check out ebooks just fine. I was really excited to find this out, because my local library system doesn't do ebooks at all yet.

I would recommend that anyone interested check out the library websites of the bigger cities in their state.

I also live in New York State, and recently applied for a library card from the New York Public Library which, as you say, is available for anyone who lives, works, or owns property anywhere in NYS.  You can apply online for a NYPL card at www.nypl.org   and they will mail you a card. BUT, you are required to go to any NYPL the first time you use it to "verify" it with ID. Which I find ridiculous.  But if you can make the trip that one time into the city, the card is worth it's weight in gold.  Even if your own library has ebooks, each library system has it's own catalog of books and you might find something you cannot get at your library.  That has happened to me with my library, which does have an extension collection. And you can reserve books, which don't take very long to become available. I was 24th on the list for a book, and it only took a week for it to become available. Guess it depends on how many copies they have to lend. Happy Reading!

I'm not Doug, however, I've always had to first download the library books to ADE, then close ADE, then connect my Nook to the computer, then open ADE again, for ADE to recognize my device. If ADE is already open, it never shows the device. (Both Nook, and NookColor)

Hope that helps!

[ Edited ]

It appears you have to show up in person at a NY Public Library location and show ID before you're allowed to borrow using your card. Bummin'. Upstate NY isn't anywhere close to NYC.

Have you checked Overdrive to see if you can find a library closer to you?

http://www.overdrive.com/

There was also a lot of discussion about the Philadelphia Free Library, which will give borrowing privileges to anyone for a yearly fee of about $15.

PFL is $35 now. The NYPL is facing a 29% cut in funding. At least they aren't facing closure, as many libraries are.  :smileysad:

Wow.  Thanks for the update.  I don't use the PFL, but I know many others got their cards when it was $15.

Re: Using the Nook for library books?

I applied online for the NYPL card and did not have to go into the library to show ID before borrowing. I live in upstate NY as well, but thought I would give it a try anyway. I get books all the time and love it!!

Re: Using the Nook for library books?

Instead of copy and pasting directions off of somewhere else, I'm going to give you a few pointers that're actually going to be helpful:

1) Google is your friend, and it is definitely not wise to ask a barnes and noble affiliated forum how one would get around having to buy books from barnes and noble itself. Having said that,

2) Get this program. It converts most books, and saves your hightlights and notes. In the few cases that it doesn't, DRM content for one, Google is, still, your friend. You might come across a pretty pearl script or two to circumvent most of your problems.

Re: Using the Nook for library books?

I have done everything up until the point of reading the library book on my nook. When I open 'My Documents' and choose the book to read, a message appears saying "User not activated." How do I fix this problem?

Try this.

  1. Plug your nook into your computer.
  2. Close ADE if it's open.
  3. Open your nook drive in Windows Explorer.
  4. Delete the folders .adobe-digital-editions and Digital Editions from your nook's drive.
  5. Disconnect the nook from your computer (using Eject).
  6. Open ADE on your computer.
  7. Plug your nook into your computer.
  8. ADE should prompt you with a query to Authorize the device. Select yes.

Re: Using the Nook for library books?

Okay. . . I had all sorts of trouble getting the library books on my Nook using ADE, but I finaly did it and can open and read them fine. . . NOW, the problem is that I can't access books I previously downloaded through B&N. The bookshelves are there but I can't scroll to them or select them -- I can only ge the library books. Arg! Help.

Is this N1E (the white-framed eink NOOK)?  If so, tap "My Library", scroll to the very top, tap "Go to My B&N Library" and you should be able to select and read.

If it's N2E I haven't a clue.
