Yes, B&N has showcased these features in their intro to the nook as well as mentioned here on the boards.
You can take notes and highlight text just like you can with the B&N ereader app for the PC, Mac, iPhone and etc.

If you read the user manual, now on your nook after v1.2.0 or you can download it Here.
When reading a book, you can use the touchscreen, scroll down, and look for "Highlights/Notes". When you tap that, you can select a word or block of text and add notes to it.

Today, I tried the Nookstudy program on the MAC. This is clearly the preferred software program over the B & N ereader since it can SYNC with Nook on my iPad and iPhone! Notes and highlights made on the iPad just need to be categorized in the NookStudy.
The sync process must be done twice and can only be performed in the library. So far I have only tried the ebooks, not etextbooks but I suspect iPad will get eTextbook capability.
One glitch with synchronizing:
When finishing making notes and highlights with one device (iPad), I synced the Nook on iPad while having Nookstudy on my MAC open at the same time.
On the MAC, I then synchronized Nookstudy but the changes didn't fully go through on the same book until I exited and restarted Nookstudy on the MAC.

I've found note taking on Nook Classic to be useless. It provides no notes/highlights summary by which one can review the notes then zoom to the associated passage in the book itself. So if you take a bunch of notes or make highlights you must page through the book to find them.
This is definitely NOT what anyone wanting to take and access notes would expect.
I have seen evidence that the Nook Color note taking is more advanced but still have questions myself. It seems to require that a passage be highlighted in order to take a note. THe summary screen seems to display a list of passages but it is not clear to me how to access the actual passage in the book (i.e. that page of the book) or the note from the summary which consists only of a list of passages.
Forget printing and syncing with Nook for PC.
I don't know how BN is analyzing marketing. Maybe there are not many like us that value this feature enough for them to refine it. I will be looking at other devices specifically because I value notes and highligh. I hear that Sony does this well but I'm not finding much information on it.

How did you sync? Can it be just through Wi-if? For some reason none of my highlights or notes that I took on my Nook Color show up on the PC app.
Thanks for any advice.

As close as I can tell, this area is for the "Nook 1st Edition". I have seen no ways of adding any notes to the Nook (1st Edition).
You could write a note, shopping list etc. on your computer and side load it to your Nook. I have looked for apps but have found NONE for the Nook (1st Edition).

You are correct there is no NotePad type app for the N1E. Or any other add-on apps for that matter.
What was being discussed here was the notation function within books, which the N1E can do.
Unfortunately, they do not sync across devices, cannot be exported or printed out, and have various other quirks that make the highlights/note function of limited utility for many people.
