Re: nook Update V 1.2 is Now Available!

Good morning!

I have what may be a silly question: if I end up having to (or choosing to) sideload the update into my Nook, what is the name of the root folder that I need to put it in?  I have seen people saying that it must go into the root folder, but I've also seen a comment saying that if you drag and drop the file onto the Nook desktop icon, it should work as well.  Any clarification is much appreciated!

Here's a post with pictures of the sideload upgrade process in action.

Yup, its silly, but only because its been answered often. :smileywink:

The root is NO FOLDER,  Just copy to nook, not to any folder.    Drag and drop in the drive letter for nook, not onto any folder.

I really love my nook. But I am still missing the "go to page" option! Hope it's coming with the next update.

  • Improved “back” button functionality for navigating eBooks and  periodicals

Just got my updated and went immediately to the WSJ to check and see if this worked like I hoped it would...and it does!  Now you can click a link to an article you want to read in depth....when you are finished reading, if you hit the back button it takes you BACK to the exact place you were when you clicked the link.  Huge improvement.

That's the problem! So my nook seems to be confused. I went to now reading and it brought me to a place I had left off in the past(though not the lastest) so I said ok a little hickup. I went to go to and went to table of contents to navigate to chapter 3 where I had convienently ended last time I read. It skipped there fine. Now I hit the back arrow ( < )expecting it to navigate back a menu which should take me back to the homepage(at least it used to). However now with this newfangled update it for some reason jumped back to the table of contents. I know I can just hit the n button but I had become accustomed to hitting the <. Is this intentional? Kristen_Z(or another admin) was this intentional? I don't like it but I suppose I can deal with it if it was.

Yes, this is intentional - while there are still ways to bring you directly back to the home screen, a lot of people (myself included) got annoyed that the back button would do this as well, instead of taking you "back" like on a browser - it always worked correctly in The Daily, but nowhere else.

The way I see it the button was working like a back button in a browser it brought me back to the previous menu(which was home). It works like this in every other menu other than when i click reading now. I just did a further test. I opened the same book via My Library instead of Reading Now and then pushed the back button and it brought me back to My Library as I hoped. Therefore since this is the only instance of this happening I'm not convinced this action was intentional.

Re: nook Update V 1.2 is Now Available!

Wow!!!  The v. 1.2 update fixes both of my major problems with the Nook as originally shipped.  You can now sort by Title or Author (now if there was just a quick way to navigate to a particular letter, the listing would be perfect).  Additionally, the update appears to have totally fixed the problem of getting gibberish in reading at least the Title (but not author) part of many PDB books purchased from Ereader.com and Fictionwise.com, both now owned by B &N.  I bought the Nook precisely because I had a large investment in DRMed PDB books from those two stores.  In fact, I have been buying ebooks there since ereader.com was peanutpress.com.  These always worked on the Nook, but you could not find them in the book list since their titles appeared as gibberish.  Now they work!!!  Thanks Barnes & Noble.  My investment in the Nook (which I otherwise really liked) has finally paid off!  Thanks for listening to your users.  Now if you would only release a linux version of your computer reader (for which you obviously have the basic technology since the Nook runs on Android Linux), I would be a totally happy camper.

Try this: Go to "My Library," make sure you are in your B&N LIbrary, and then press "Check for New Content."  This forced an update for me.  I'm about 40% right now.

@MiniMischief-your suggestion on how to kickoff the wireless download worked for me.  many thanks.

Re: nook Update V 1.2 is Now Available!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! That worked right when tech support finally got on the line. It didn't eject or go to the home screen, but it downloaded. I still have some issues with the nook vs the Kindle, but I enjoy owning both. If anyone wants a comparison to the "virgin" versions of both, I'd be happy to give them (pros and cons). Overall, the nook is easier to read on but harder to buy on (I can't believe prices aren't listed on the samples after you download them), but shopping is easier on the nook. More details if anyone is ever interested.

They can't be doing it only to areas.  I purchased two Nooks.  One upgraded perfectly by checking for new BN content.  The other won't.

Serial number?

IMEI number?

It doesn't matter. They have to parse it out to keep from melting the towers and servers.

If you can't get it on 3G or WIFI, Side load. works.

Maybe you should wait and get back to work. Instead of wasting time and the IT folks time.

The update worked great, the bookmarks issue was fixed which was a pain before, that along should improve battery as you can now turn the unit off.

Updated easy. Bookmarks work well, like the crisper look screen. Screen moves smoother than it did prior.  I would like still options of " Next Chapter" or pick the specific page number if you want.  I guess with bookmarks working now might not be as big of deal.

Re: nook Update V 1.2 is Now Available!

Found a new error message.  Scrolling really fast with the page button, received the error "Forced closure" with a 'forced close' listed in the touch screen area. I selected it and the nook 'refreshed' back to the exact page I was on when the error message appeared.  I believe I previously froze my nook by pushing the button too fast through the pages - this time it didn't freeze up!

Mine also downloaded the new update all on its own, soon as I went to check for new content....everything seems to be working perfectly, and when I touched 'reading now', it went right to the last page I read.  So far, so good....I love my nook!

Go to my library check for new b & n content. All you folks using work wifi having problems remember it could be a firewall issue as most jobs block things out.

Re: nook Update V 1.2 is Now Available!

As my my nook has been working flawlessly to date, I'd prefer to hold off on the update to make sure there are no fatal bugs. I assume I can defer the update, or is it pushed automatically via WiFi? Is there a way to check the software I am currently running? I've had mine less than a week and am curious whether it might have already included the new software.

It seems safe.

But if you want to hold off, just turn airplane mode on.

In the Settings you will see your software version.

Re: nook Update V 1.2 is Now Available!

Overall, I find the update has made significant improvement in the usability of the Nook....

On the positive side...

1) Being able to sort "my documents" by author and fixing the gibberish titles is a big step in the right direction. I can now see all the titles and most of the authors of my sideloaded books.

2) The touchscreen seems more responsive, and the contrast of the e-ink screen seems better.

3) Overall, everything I've played with seems to be just a bit faster.

On the not-so-positive side...

1) While I can sort my sideloaded books by title or author, I can't edit the title or author fields, and the Nook doesn't use the metadata from Calibre... apparently it uses the metadata from within the file itself. This means that if a book's metadata says that the author is "John Smith", it sorts under "J". If it's in the metadata as "Smith, John", it's sorted under "S". Likewise, some of my sideloaded books (from Fictionwise and/or eReader) end up with titles like "Title of Book-Author" with the "author" field left blank in the metadata, so the book sorts with the author as "unknown", or in some cases the author is "null". The result is that I end up having to hunt around in almost 400 files trying to find the next book in a series, since out of the 8 books in that series the metadata might be organized in 3 or 4 different ways (even when purchased from a single source). I can't imagine what it's like for those who have more sideloaded books than I do... As I said above, this is better than it was (at least I can see the titles, so I can eventually find the book I'm looking for), but there's still room for improvement.

2) There's still no "go to page" option within a book. It would seem that this should be a basic navigation function.

Features I'd like to see included in a future update:

1) the ability to use the swipe on the touchscreen rather than the buttons when moving going through the pages and pages of sideloaded books.

2) the ability to search the author/title fields in "documents". This would help with those books where the author is either tacked onto the end of the title or is switched around, as well as those times I don't remember the exact title I'm looking for.

3) along with the "go to page" in a book, the ability to "go to a specific letter" when navigating "my documents" in author/title sort.
