"Lend Me" Program

Hi, I would like more information on the "Lend Me" option. I personally don't know anyone with an ebook and since I bought my Nook I have bought MANY books and would love to loan and borrow once in awhile...Is there a place people can go to "swap" books?

Re: "Lend Me" Program

@Cateyes702,

Thank you for posting.  We're striving to improve the reading experience and your input is valuable.

In general, Lending offers on a wide selection of eBooks can be sent from the nook to any email address. A lending offer, which shows up in the daily on the recipient's nook or their email account if they do not own a nook, is available for 7 days and can be accepted or declined on a nook or online. All lendable titles can be lent once for 14 days. Once a lending offer is submitted, it cannot be retracted.

If you are expecting to receive a lent book or a lend offer, and you don't see it in your nook, go to My Library and tap Check for New B&N Content.

With our new LendMe™ technology, you can lend many of your eBooks one time for a maximum of 14 days. In your nook's library, select an eBook and tap Lend. Then you either select a friend you have already defined on your nook, or create a new contact. You can also enter a personal message. Once done, tap Submit and then Confirm to have your lend offer emailed to your friend.

Contacts is the place where you keep the names and e-mail addresses of people to whom you'd like to lend books. To access your list of contacts, press Settings --> Contacts.

I hope this helps.

Michael-V

Re: "Lend Me" Program

Can I use this program to lend titles to my local library? We're loaning eBooks to the public.

Re: "Lend Me" Program

Hello, if I lend a book out, does that mean I cannot read it while they are borrowing?

Thanks,

Christine

Correct.  It's similar to lending out your DTB in that if your friend has it, you can't read it at the same time.

Re: "Lend Me" Program

This will actually prevent me from ordering any more Nook LendMe books or regular Nook books. I will just purchase the books for my library elsewhere so that I can truly "lend" a book to a friend multiple times and to multiple people. That's all.

Just in case you aren't aware, this is not a BN restriction, it's a publisher restriction, so if you're thinking this is unique to books purchased from B&N, it's not.  eBooks purchased from any source that has the Lendme program are subject to this restriction.

Not to say this isn't a good idea, but I've looked into purchasing eBooks for my library and it isn't as simple as purchasing the eBook and giving it to the library.  You have to purchase the book through Overdrive, assuming your library is overdrive based and they were generally more expensive, like maybe $10 more per book.  You might want to also check with your library to see if they can handle requests like this, there may be some that can't.

Random House recently raised the library eBook prices.  According to one library, a book that costs $17.99 to a consumer used to cost $35 to a library. Now it costs $105 to the library.

HarperCollins has a lending limit of 26 lends before the library has to buy a new license.

MacMillan and Simon and Schuster won't even let the libraries purchase their eBooks.

I believe Penguin has stopped selling new titles to the libraries.

But if you figure out a way to do this, please let us know because I would like to be able to donate eBooks to my library also.

Oh and one other thing, depending on how close these friends are you can share the eBooks with them, if you're willing to share or input your cc information into their device.

Maybe it's just me, but I was thinking the reference to "library" was to their personal Nook library, not the public library.  I could be wrong.

You're probably right.  When I read it I saw library, assumed it was the public library, since it doesn't matter where they buy the books for their personal library, they still can't lend them more than once or in a lot of cases not all.  I just should have stuck with the point, it's not a B&N restriction and before they go blogging about something, they should have all their facts straight.
