I'm a long time Palm advocate, from Palm VX to a Palm Pre Plus.  I had high hopes when HP "rescued" Palm last year and eagerly awaited the Touchpad release.  The fiasco that followed made me very glad that I didn't pre-order a TP.  My phone is locked at the 1.4.5.1 version despite HP promising an update to WebOS 2.

There may be "hundreds of thousands" of TP's in use, who knows?  Some of them grabbed it for the hardware at $99 and are trying to get Android to run on it.

BN isn't doing such a great job of supporting the much larger Mac user base.  I doubt if they will even consider WebOS given the lack of information from HP.  Will HP keep it, sell it, drop it?  If they know, they aren't saying.

Exactly most people bought it because of the price and in the hope that Android would be ported to it not because of WebOs. WebOs is very nice, but the reality is that it has noreal platform to be used on.

Re: Nook for webOS

It's a valid point that some want to modify the device to Android, but 'most' is an exageration. Anybody who bought the device at full price were offered refunds, so everybody has a $99/$149 device, many (if not 'most') are happy with WebOS as is. And there are 100,000's of devices out there.

However if B&N are not supporting other devices too well, then I would agree there is little hope they would move to another, especially given that the future is yet unknown for the OS.

I can still hope though, becuase I will not start buying Kindle books for the touchpad when I am a nook owner.

Re: Nook for webOS

Maybe just maybe one step closer to knowing the future of WebOS.  HP have announced that they are retaining thier Personal Systems Group (the PCs, laptops etc...) which they announced they planned on spinning off during the same press release on the demise of the webOS hardware.

They have said that now a desicion has been reached on PSG they will be looking at WebOS.  Should know more in a few weeks.

Fingers crossed!

Re: Nook for webOS

Sadly it looks like I will be using the Kindle app for my reading.  It's a shame, I'd much rather give my money to B&N...

HP announced today it's plan for WebOS.  It's not going away ... how about getting us an app now?

It is going take a lot more than this announcement. At the moment the market is nil.

[ Edited ]

Do what everyone else (all 500,000) Touchpad users do - use the WebOS Kindle app. Amazon's prices are the same as Barnes & Nobles, and neither allows (nor has a mechanism) for you to resell an eBook as a "used book". I used to use Nook software exclusively on my PC and Android smartphone, but since I got my Touchpad last summer, it's Kindle all the way for eBooks for the obvious reason that Kindle supports all platforms, and in terms of which is "better", Nook vs Kindle is a false dicotomy.

Having said that, there's still a huge advantage of physical books over eBooks even for "read & discard" books (as oppose to reference books you'd want to keep), namely that with real books you can often buy then in great shape but used for pennies on the dollar. Publishers love eBooks because there is no used market mechanism, so all copies generate revenue for the publishers.

I don't suppose there's anything new on this topic that hasn't been reported? Fat chance? Guess I'll switch to the Kindle...anyone in the market for a nook...the original?

Re: Nook for webOS

Well, B&N could release a reader for Webos without patent conflict, and my understanding is that it is easy to port and support. So it could be low hanging fruit that would let them claim that they are dynamic. I would certainly love it

Is it really that huge of a deal to port the Nook app to WebOS? Both Android and WebOS are based on Linux.

The web os market is dead. Most of the HP tablets were purchased to put Android on them. B&N are not going to waste their resources on this.
