HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

I have an HD+ and I can't get it to charge in my car.

I have tried several different adapters and cords, including brand new ones with the help of a store employee. I attempted to charge my HD+ and my mom's HD+ to no avail. The employee took my HD+ to his car and had no problem, it charged immediately. I recently tried a charger adapter for use with laptops (3-prong plugs and USB port) and even that wouldn't work

I have other Nooks and electronic devices that charge without a problem.

Anyone else have this issue? Advice? The Nook specialist at my store was baffled and asked me to let him know what I find out.

Are you sure you don't need a fuse to your cigeratte lighter in the car, that is what was wrong with mine.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

I suppose that's possible, but wouldn't a burned out fuse make it so that nothing will charge? My phone, iPod, and other gadgets charge fine.

If the employee was able to charge your HD with your cable in his car, but your HD won't charge in your your car with your cable then then it would seem to be the car.  If I understand correctly, same HD, same cable, different cars?  Why the car would differentiate between devices makes no sense, but you've tried different cables.

Thought of something, could it be a power issue?  I can't get my ipad to charge in the car, but my iPod will.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

I am a truck driver, so I only charge mine this way.  The best way to do it , is find a small inverter and use the wall plug.  I have 2 in here. I can't seem to get mine to charge with just the usb.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

You need a certain amount of current/voltage to trigger USB charging. Devices vary in the amount they need. You could try putting a larger amp fuse in the car power plug or using an inverter. I re-wired the car power plug to the battery when I needed more power for an inverter.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

My son has been borrowing my car, so I haven't been able to test further.

I've tried plugging the cable directly into the inverter (?) that I purchased for charging the laptop, which has worked in our other vehicles. I haven't tested to see if the laptop will charge, only tried the HD+. I'll try it again with the wall charger plugged into it before connecting the cable to see if that makes a difference.

I also have another data charging spot (LOL! I don't know the technical names!) in the back of the vehicle, I'll see if that has more power. Husband will have to help check the spark plug or consider changing the spark plug to a more powerful one.

In the meantime, I bring my Nexus 7 with me everywhere I go. The HD+ gets to stay home and languish in it's difficult behavior.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

Most all vehicle power jacks are rated for 15 to 20 Amps at 12V (13.8 if the engine is running at more than an idle). That's over 180 Watts. Should be more than enough to charge any hand held device.

However, some outlets are switched and have no power when the ignition is off. So plugging in a power adapter will only charge while the engine is running. And sice it takes a few hours to charge an HD/+, one may not see much charging during a 10-20 minute commute.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

I know that my Nook HD+ will charge when hooked to my computer, but only if the screen is off.

If I turn the screen on to check, it says it isn't charging.

Nonetheless the % charge has gone up while the screen has been dark.

Is it possible that yours is charging from your car but not when you turn it on to check?

What AlbironRose said.

OP, do you not get charging - Does that mean you don't see device say 'charging'?

Or does it mean, you plug it in and leave it for a few hours and it hasn't changed the battery charge level.

Because the behavior is that if the power source isn't very strong - When you have screen on it won't charge and will show 'Discharging' when plugged in.

IT'll charge only when screen is off.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

So far I have only checked to see if it was charging by looking at the battery under settings. I just went to my car to check again, with my engine running and the display off on the Nook, I see a green light next to where the charger plugs into the Nook, therefore it's discharging. I plugged it into an electrical outlet and the light is now orange indicating it is charging.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

What finally worked for me was when I connected my nook to the wall charger and plugged that into the inverter. That is the only way so far that I get the orange charging light.

Thanks for all of your help and input!

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

Good to know what worked for you. What inverter are you using and where can you buy one?

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

This is the inverter I bought in the store at Walmart. I can't remember the price, seems like it was under $30, but it might have been a bit more.

What I like about it: it's pretty quiet, the cord is long enough so the box can sit on the center console (rather than dangle), it has a usb port and two electrical outlets, as well as an on/off switch.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

I went through multiple USB warts and none of them worked except for the one that came with the USB plug from B&N.  I have a feeling that it's because the USB cable requires 5.1v where most of the warts only release 5V.  It works in the computer probably because of the data connection that should also be connected along with the 5V line....

All I know is that when I use the Nook Wall-wart, it charges very quickly (within an hour or two).  If it's hooked up to the computer, it still charges when I sync my music.

Re: HD+ Will Not Charge in Car

The difference between 5.0 and 5.1 is in the noise.

However, the difference between USB standard of 0.5A (distributed among up to four ports) and the nearly 2A charge-only needed by an HD/+ is significant. The HD/+ needs nearly 10W to charge, but stock USB maxes out at just over 2W.
