Just purchased a brand new Nook HD + on 5/21/13 and the nook shop will not load, i have already tried holding thepower button down and shutting the device off and turning it back on, Shop will still not load, any other suggestions save returning the thing?

One thing to try:
Go to Settings / Device Information / Erase & Deregister Device.
This will restore it to defaults, If that doesn't work then they should be able to give you a replacement in the store.
