It would be wonderful if Nook would come out with a way of backing up your shelving system so in the future if you were to have your shelves disappear you could just reload the shelves or if you were to buy a new Nook reader you could just transfer all your work from your older well used Nook to your new Nook. Any chance of this?

Sony's readers already have off-device shelving and backup of shelves to PCs.

 

Shelf issues have been making trouble for owners throughout the history of the Nook line - how much would it cost to either

 

- license the technologhy from Sony

 

- support 'binned' sorting in the library app.  If a user toggled it on, so that there would be a group of books whose authors' last names started with A, another with B, etc., or set the bins up to sort by title instead?   BN wouldn't have to recognize any epub tagging - though they should, since adding sort-by tag and break-on title or sort-by tag and break-on author should give users a great way to manage content as well. 

 

Either approach would be helpful.  The latter would be relatively close to free.  It's one of the big reasons I use fbreader much of the time, since I'm able to actually find my books with it, without ever using shelves.

I agree with Roustabout. B&N urgently needs to address shelving, and they should offer a comprehensive solution, not merely backup and restore.

 

I'd be very satisfied if they just enhanced the library app to recognize epub tags and allow sorting and grouping by tag. IMO that would make on-board shelving superfluous. I don't mind using Calibre to manage the tags and sideload the books. This approach ought to be easier for the Nook developers to implement. They wouldn't have to redesign the shelving UI.

Alex, I respectfully disagree that this is not an issue.

 

The issue purple outlined is loss of shelves.  Purple is one of many users asking that this be fixed.  I am suggesting a couple of options for doing so, one of which ought to be fairly inexpensive for BN.

 

Shelf loss after a {firmware update | a reboot | the cat sneezing} has been an issue for so long that its existence is implicit in the entire product line.  Yes, we are suggesting bugfixes.  With the HD/HD+ the universe of shelf-munging options appears to be expanded. 

 

This does not mean we consider the wider range of munging scenarios to be a feature enhancement :smileyhappy:

I agree with Roustabout, so many of the issues being discussed date back to the N1 or NC. B&N's apparent refusal to acknowledge, much less address, these issues is extremely disappoining! What is the point of having this board if "Closed" is the eqivalent of the Erase and Rerrgister" response from Customer No Service?

You just need to view this from a different (BN's) perspective. :smileywink: The loss of shelves is a feature of the nook and thus can't be an issue. Any request to fix it is then a suggestion not a bug report. :smileyfrustrated:

Hey Roustabout,

 

I was meaning in regards to having a way to backup the shelving as outlined in the post. Disappearing shelves is of course a concern and "issue"; but in regards to adding a backup method as a workaround I would take that more as a suggestion than an actual call for a fix or "bug" report.

Like what happened with Keri; i'm not dismissing what was posted. Actually, I personally LOVE the idea, it really just makes all the sense in the world. But, I guess to set some level of expectation around what this area is intended to point out.

 

I'm actually confusing myself as I type...so yea, I'll be making a followup post in NOOK News regarding this board and statuses. :smileylol:

I lost all my shelves on my NookColor after a store employee, in an effort to fix a problem I was having with the apps, totally rebooted my NookColor. Didn't fix the problem and lost all my shelves! I have hundreds of books so having to reset all my shelves again is a BIG problem! I am not happy with the answers I am getting on this issue or on not being able to edit/delete a review issue. My sister has a Kindle and has been trying to convince me to change. After all the non-help I am getting through B&N Community and in-store, I think I am convinced.

The ISSUE is that shelves are being lost on a device reset and lost on hardware upgrades.

 

You may well mean to say that BECAUSE its a design issue, its not an issue that can be resolved as part of the process of maintaining the current system, but is rather an issue that either requires a B&N app to perform cloud storage of Nook shelves, or an operating version upgrade.

 

However, the fact that the shelves are being lost on a device reset because they are DESIGNED to be lost on device reset, rather than because of an implementation bug, does not change the fact that people are losing the bookshelves on a device reset, and that is an issue with the effective functioning of the device.

 

As an economist, I'd also observe that discouraging hardware upgrades by designing shelves to be stored on device, and discourgaing readers from building up content collections on the B&N cloud so large that they REQUIRE shelving in order to find things implies that these are marketing bugs as well as design bugs.

 

(My reccomendation, BTW, would be a freestanding bookshelf storage app up front, and integration into the built in shelving systemonce all the kinks are worked out.)

Unfortunately, shelving has been an issue (actually a couple different issues) forever, and complaints have been made for years with no response.  There has never been any indication that B&N has even listened to complaints on the issue or has any plans to ever make any changes.

 

Personally I find this far more annoying that the newly introduced table of contents issue that so ticked off Keri.  We've just been living with it for so long that we have come to accept it.

 

The fact that shelving cannot be saved, and is lost on any device reset or move to different devices, is an issue.  Always has been, on all models.

 

The fact that shelf maintenance at all is garbage on the NST is a major issue.  Adding one book to a shelf, if the title starts with a letter at the end of the alphabet, requires scrolling through the entire library.  Clearly the designers/developers of this feature tried it out on a test Nook with a handful of books and thought it was fine.  Those of us who actually have hundreds of books know otherwise.  The worst part of this one is that the shelving process on the original N1E was much simpler and worked just fine.  It wasn't broken, but somebody redesigned it anyway.

This is a must-fix in my opinion.

 

Shelves are really important to organize books and they also make people happier i.e. having everything neatly organized, knowing where to put what.

 

Try it yourself - go into your PC and re-arrange a few folders to be better arranged (moving files around). Or with your Email.

 

It leads to productivity and happiness.

The people who have hundreds and thousands of books are the ones MOST LIKELY to buy lots of books.

 

If someone were to do a 80-20 analysis they would quite likely find that the customers asking for shelves and needing shelves are accounting for a disproportionately high %age of ebook sales.

 

It would be a feature that would pay for itself 100 times over.

1) Much Better Search

2) Daily Deals with 5-10 categories (or 5-10 books) instead of just 1.

3) A Better Recommendation Engine.
