Updates to NST

Status: New Idea

Now that BN has updated the Nook HD and HD+ to feature the Google Play Store, I believe a Nook Simple Touch update is necessary if BN wants to compete with Amazon and Apple.

Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite has a web browser already. The Nook could be much better if it had:

  • A web browser
  • A email application
  • A news reader (RSS possibly)

These few features are not complicated, and they do not require a lot of processing power. I am not asking for the Nook to play Angry Birds, I would just like it to allow me to read more than books. Email, news, and the web would be fantastic.

I already know about the hidden NST Google login browser, so I know that a real browser would work well on the Nook! As a loyal Nook user for over 3 years, I would be very happy to see updates to the E-ink side of the Nook product line!

The web browser and  music player were available in the original eink NOOK and removed because the (readers) customers of &N did not want them and told B&N so.

I think that a music player and other features would be necessary additions to a new Nook hardware model, but keep in mind that the current NST does not have a headphone jack or even speakers. Unfortunately, the hardware can't be updated like software can.

BN could really boost some sales by at minimum adding extra reading options as mentioned above. I would really like to read the news and email along with my books! Who says the Nook needs to be a one trick pony? The more, the merrier.

I can fully relate with people who are not willing to ruin their reading experience with web browsing, email, and RSS. But all these are, in fact, reading, especially RSS and web browsing. I find that sometimes I prefer reading books on my phone just because it's faster than juggling around with devices. Which is such a shame because I love reading on my Nook GlowLight. A way to access your favourite web service dedicated to "later reading", for me, would be a very nice feature.

You can root your NST and have the ability to install apps from the Play store, along with the NST as purchased features...
