It would be wonderful if Nook would come out with a way of backing up your shelving system so in the future if you were to have your shelves disappear you could just reload the shelves or if you were to buy a new Nook reader you could just transfer all your work from your older well used Nook to your new Nook. Any chance of this?

Sorting by Genre

Status: Acknowledged

It would be really nice to be able to sort my nook books by genre.  I would really like to look at the genre and view my based off of Thriller, Romance, Action, etc.

free friday and daily find

Status: Under Review

Please add both to either daily nook page or nook channels. I soooo hate having to go on to the web to search for these!

Categories: NOOK HD, NOOK HD+

There doesn't seem to be any way to search "mynook" on the website. Obviously once you have a lot of items, this is a problem. Having to scroll through 100 books to find something is just crazy.

It would also be nice to be able to sort by date purchased. This is needed on the website, apps, and nooks. Currently sort is a little erratic, but it puts anything at the top of the list even if you just opened it to see what it was. This way I could easily find something I bought last week or last month. Or I could do a reverse sort to find things I bought a long time ago.

Allow customer access to "Unknown Sources" app installation

Status: Under Review

BN has a vested interest in developing their own ecosystem for apps - primarily that the Google Play Store is now a direct competitor to BN/NOOK in core content categories such as ebooks and eperiodicals. I accept that explanation as to why the NOOK platform hasn't been "opened up" (to use such a loaded and incorrect term) to the wider Android ecosystem.

- however -

BN/NOOK simply don't have the mindshare/marketshare to develop an ecosystem on par with Google or Apple. As well as the company has done evangelizing (and they have done a pretty good job in terms of getting some rather big names onto the platform that even established tech companies like Microsoft and RIM have had trouble with), they are always going to be behind in getting the apps that many customers want.

As more and more customers invest in a smartphone and begin to buy into Google's ecosystem, they're going to be less likely to want to repurchase their same apps on a different store. And the "stock" (again, a very loaded term) Android devices continue to fall in price and achieve feature parity with the NOOK line, giving those customers access to their apps at the same price point as a NOOK with comparable hardware. This is not a recipe for a successful long-term venture.

But there is an easy and relatively painless (business-wise) solution.

Android, by default, has the option to allow APK installs from "Unknown Sources" as a setting. This allows the end user to install apps that aren't purchased from the local shop on the device. The NOOK device fork hides this option, but it still exists in the system.

BN/NOOK needs to allow customers access to this option. Checking the "Unknown Sources" box already pops up a warning about malware on "stock" Android devices - simply modify this warning to include information about potential warranty ramifications for NOOK users who do the same. Now, free of charge, customers have access to a much wider selection of apps.

The critique of enabling this option, from a business perspective, is that this would "cost BN sales" in terms of dollars. And this is potentially true in a small number of circumstances, where savvy customers would install the ad-supported free Angry Birds instead of paying the $3 for the BN Shop edition. However, those customers who know enough about Android to locate and install an APK on their own are the customers who are also aware of the slew of generally good "stock" Android devices available near the NOOK pricepoint, and were much more likely to purchase those devices. Giving them the option to install apps would potentially get them into the NOOK ecosystem, and even though there wouldn't be as much app revenue, there's plenty of options to upsell them on other content.

And, more importantly, there is enough friction involved in downloading an APK and installing it manually that the vast majority of customers wouldn't bother. It is a time consuming process to find an APK online, make sure it hasn't been modified for nefarious purposes, and install it on the device. It is the same reason BN can safely support Adobe Digital Editions transferred ebooks - the option is there and a nice selling point, but it's too intensive for the average customer to really care about.

Battery meter missing from Quick Settings on HD+

Status: Under Review

One of the nice features of the NC/NT was the ability to see the battery meter % when tapping on Quick Settings. This % is now buried in the settings menu. Please return it to the Quick Settings screen. Thanks!

If you log into the iPad app, and sort your books by author, books in a series nicely "stack" in by series.(assuming the metadata was properly entered by the publisher.) And when you "unstack" them, the books appear in series order (1,2,3...) By stacking, am referring to how magazines appear together until you tap on them again.

This feature has been available on the iPad for the better part of a year now. Incorporating this feature into the entire Nook line would be very useful to your users. (And should also eliminate a number of the complaints about shelving --- no ability to back up the shelves, the difficulty in creating the shelves, etc.)

Please consider incorporating this feature.

The Nook Color and Tablet displayed the Chapter and the number of pages remaining in the Chapter in the center of the Reading Progress display as well as the total pages in the book ( on the right corner). I would like to see this feature return the the Nook HD+/HD 's reader. I also would like to be able to lock the auto page turn from with in the book like I could in the Nook Color.

If Publisher defaults are selected you can not change font size on the Nook HD+.  On the Nook Color you could turn on Publisher defaults and still adjust the size of your font for easier reading.

Need I mention disappearing Shelves!!

Finally.. Nook HD+ needs to be able to actually read/refresh  its ext_Sdcard when one is installed. Currently I have to shutdown/restart the HD+  to actually be able to read an ebook or file placed / downloaded onto the SD card.  The Files in Library will show the file is on the SD card but you get error message trying to use the reader until you restart the HD+. Additionally once you restart the HD+ all sideloaded content "disappears" from the keep reading Active Shelf and you have to go search for a sideloaded book you might have been reading before you rebooted the HD+.

Please add a way to backup Apps save data to Nook HD.

Status: Under Review

Most games do not allow us to backup the save progress and restore it later.  This is extremely aggravating when a reset is required to resolve another issue and you have to start all over again.

So, in short, it would be wonderful if there was a supported official backup and restore method.

Hide Cloud Items

Status: Under Review

With the changes to the Archive system branding on the HD Series NOOKs ("NOOK Cloud"), a rather annoying issue has cropped up. Unlike the Archive system from the Encore and Simple Touch lines, which hid archived items in a seperate menu on the device, items stored in the NOOK Cloud are still visible in the main Library of a NOOK HD/HD+. This has an adverse effect on people with large libraries who previously used the Archive function to organize their Library.

Adding an option to "Hide Items in NOOK Cloud" to the Library view on the HD Series devices (much like the N1E allowed "Hide" and "Show" options for Archived items) would alleviate this common issue.

There are 2 apps which work well and address exisitng Nook user interface issues.

1  Calibre Companion - permits connecting a device to a computer running calibre wirelessly.  The connection is a true device connection and supports managing epub, text, PDF and RTF files without the problems that the HD and HD+ software are having for many users.

2  Status Bar + - permits a status bar to be displayed at all times (including when reading) with a clock, a battery indicator, a wireless signal strength indicator and a charging indicator.  There are numerous requests for these features to be available on the new devices as well.

Both of these products are currently sold ad-free in the Android marketplace, so the authors are not depending on AdSense or other non-BN platforms for income.  Evaluating them for inclusion on the shop would let BN address requests with minimal staff time.

I love the way the magazines on my Nook HD+ and Nook Color go into collapsing menus, where I just set one entry for the magazine and I tap it, and I see all of the magazines.

I think it would be nice if there was an option on the library screen to turn that on for authors and/or series. Personally I'd like it for both, and I'd probably go back and forth between the two views and normal view, but I'd be happy with either.

Reasons for this are

- it would make scrolling through the library screen easier, because there'd be less of it, and fewer things to trip up your fingers.  Large libraries, especially, can already take a while to load.

- in some ways, it could reduce the need for my own shelves, by making things easier to find, and in ways it's possible people might shelve them.

- it would make it much easier, to see, at a glance, if there are certain books by an author, or in a series, that I'm missing.  Sometimes, when you're looking at your library there's too much other stuff around to make it easy to focus on what's not there, or some series books are written by different authors, and sorted differently, even if you sort by author.

- it could make it easier for archving and/or assigning to profiles if you could send entire stacks to the archive or to the desired profile (this person can read everything by Gaiman, or archive all the Harry Potter books) instead of needing to select each book individually.  I know this isn't a current functionality of the collapsing menus as they are, but it would be a nice addition.

there should be a subscription page

Status: New Idea

There should be a subscription page.  Currently it takes you to your mynook magazine library and you have to search through every magazine to find a subscription.

The fact that you can't search for anything in your library makes it worse.

I assume it's been setup this way to make it more difficult to unsubscribe.  It seems to me it used to be much easier.

I should be able to unsubscribe from my nook as well. It should be an option in the item details.  There is a subscribe button that gets greyed out once you subscribe. Instead it should change to an unsubscribe button!

HD+ - Titles, Sort view, missing "quick get to" feature

Status: Under Review

On the NT, when looking at your books, when viewing your TITLES, in addition to the list and grid view, there was another view (don't even know what you really call it.)  Basically, it let you view your titles like this:

0 - 9

A- C

D-F

G -I

J-L

M-O

P-S

T-V

W-Z

Would like to see this feature returned to the HD+ software.  (The never.........ending....... scrolling to get to the bottom is tedious)

Alternatively, something similar to how phones work where the entire alphabet is kind of superimposed on the far right side, and you select a letter to get you closer to where you want to be. (Yeah, I'm not explaining the phone thing well. But if you've used one, you probably know what I mean.)

Using the search feature isn't really working (since it picks up all instances of a word.)  For example, to get to all my titles that start with "The", a search will include all instances of titles with "the" within the titles as well as those that start with "the."

Would also like to see something similar for Authors as well.

Book shelf

Status: New Idea

I would love to buy the HAD nook. How ever  one of the most basic needs for the bookshelf is missing,

When I set up  my book shelf , I would think being able to arrange my book series in proper order

of the series would be possible to do. I was surprised that its not possible the books just scramble

in the shelf and I can arrange them in the order they should be in. I wont buy another nook as much as I like them until this oversight is  fixed,

Suggest Nook Friends with Similar Interests As You

Status: New Idea

A lot of people have a Nook, but don't really know anyone with similar interests to borrow books from. The Nook should help find Nook friends with similar books and interests. This way, people will find Nook friends to share book reviews, quotes, and borrow books from. This kind of like Picked Just for You in the Nook shop, only used to help find Nook friends.

Where do we find out if an IDEA or Suggestion has been implemented by B&N on the Nook HD?

Categories: NOOK HD

It would be nice to allow an export of the information for all the books in my library to a CSV file, or something similar, to allow uploading on book cataloguing sites like LibraryThing and GoodReads.  The information like title, author, publisher, page numbers, size of book, ISBN, etc is all available on each books product information page.  Doing it book by book can take a while, so having an export option would be very nice.

Real Page Numbers

Status: New Idea

NOOK should add real page numbers that correspond to the print editions so that the customers can easily reference, cite passages, and share with friends.

NOTE: The Amazon Kindle DOES HAVE this feature.

Provide a subscription service for $9/month.  Allow for "4 downloads" of any books, movies, or magazines.

For example:

2 books/1 movie/1 magazine

1 book/3 movies

3 books/1 magazine

1 book/2 magazine/1 movie

4 movies

Etc.
