absurd page numbers

I just bought the book Imager:

According to the product details, the book has 488 pages. I know that the nook version will sometimes show different numbers of pages depening on font and text sizes etc, but on both my simple touch and on the pc reader app, it shows this book as having 1339 pages, and when I hit the next page button the "current page" indicator will skip up by sometimes as much as 3 or 4 pages.

So when you call nook support, they contact the publisher.  That's how it's supposed to happen.  So why are you saying that you can't?  You call them, and they do it.

Because I spent way too much time messing with that message.  At one point it had been 'directly contacting', then I added a bit about nook support, and basically kept switching things around. 

 

In any case it's in the OPs best interest to contact the publisher as well, or contact customer service and hope that they are still doing what they should be.

 

I think we already agreed this issue shouldn't be here if it is isolated to that one book.

Actually, AFAIK, the OP issue isn't missing content at all, it's that the OP was confused about page numbers.

 

If the issue was missing content, I'd like to see it stay until the publisher was notified (by B&N), but that's not the issue.

I read skipping pages as in missing content, perhaps I'm mistaken and it's just going from page 1 to page 4 but showing the content that would have been on page 2 of the book.

 

That we've been able to have this discourse and the issue hasn't been solved in some way by someone in an official capacity is slightly disturbing given how the former suggestions forum was treated.

 

It should not take anywhere near this long for someone to be able to verify that it's either isolated to the OPs download or to the ebook (I'm assuming it's not a device wide issue as no one else has posted with the same issue), and then respond to this thread.

 

Or is the purpose of the Nook Reporting forum merely to present issues to developers and never have the issue marked as resolved?

The original poster posted this message yesterday, on a Sunday and the original poster hasn't been back to answer any of the questions that have been asked, perhaps someone contacted them directly.  Would you really expect an answer in one day?  I do some software support for my employer, I respond in the order received for the most part.

 

I just downloaded the sample of that book.  It does jump several pages, but from what I can tell, there is no missing content, at least not in the sample, just weird page numbering, so it's definitely the book.  I would report it to both B&N and the publisher, and probably also the author, but unless there is content missing I would go ahead and read the book.  I know when I've reported a problem with a book, I had better luck contacting the author.  It still took a while for it to be fixed and released to BN, but eventually it was fixed.

Given that B&N just created this forum seemingly as an olive branch toward a disgruntled forum user base which was calling out about the lack of a forum like this, the lack of interaction between B&N reps and and customers presenting issues on the forum, etc. I would expect that this forum would have someone watching it and checking on the issues and making clear and very noticble steps to resolve the issue.

 

It's not like this forum is overrun with issues currently, there are eight issues of which this is one.  None of them have been changed from 'Open'.  I have to hope that there are more options than 'Open' and 'Closed', such as 'In Progress' 'Forwarded to Development Team' and 'Answered' to name a few possibilities. 

 

I would also hope they don't have someone watching the forum under the instructions of 'don't progress in a different issue until the current issue is fully resolved, even if you have taken all the steps currently available to you in seeking that solution'.

The previous Issue Reporting boards and Ideas and Suggestions boards (deleted earlier this year) boasted a full arsenal of tracking codes, few of which were ever used in any meaningful way. I'd love to think that this one will be different, but then I'd also love to snap my fingers and instantly be in Paris, or Vienna, or Kyoto.

bklvr896, that's what I and several others have suggested the OP do, save for the author bit which in this case is a good suggestion.  I've found fantasy writers generally are a bit more focused on their fans than some of the other generes. 

 

Sun_Cat, I have to agree, I've seen you post a few other places about being skeptical on the outcome of this forum based on the actions taken, or rather not taken, in the past.  It's a shame that a company like B&N that has been in the digital bussiness for several years now is still falling behind in web support. 

 

I don't expect every suggestion for a feature be it software or hardware to be implemented, or even addressed.  But problems with the device should be, and it should just be people who don't work for B&N, or in some cases (like me) aren't being paid for offering help here.  The idea of crowd sourcing tech support is good, but the idea of only crowd sourcing tech support is going to leave customers with a bad taste in their mouths.

I agree and nam hopeful these posts will get responses, but I do think its unrealistic to expect. A response in one day, especially on a weekend and for an issue that doesn't seem to affect the actual reading of the book.  While there may not be as lot of issues here, they also get emails that have to be responded to, posting here doesn't automatically get you to the top of the list.  It's also right after Christmas land they're probably inundated with requests for help registering.

 

if they don't start responding in the near future then I'll agree it may not be doing any good, but I'm not going to write it off after a week in the middle of the holiday season.

 

and we have no idea what has or hasn't happened in this case since the OP has never returned.

Wow, first time I've gotten so many responses to a post before I could get back to it. I didn't check at all the past couple days because I wasn't really expecting anything official with the holiday weekend and all.

 

I've finished reading through the book, and as far as I can tell there's no content missing. What flyingtoastr posted about page numbers being based on the number of kb in the file doesn't really make sense to me though. To me, it seems that for any e-reader, the most logical way to calculate the page numbers would be to base it on how much of the text can be seen on the screen with the current font and font size. -  which is how it's been done for most of the other ebooks I've read.

 

As for asking for a refund or whatever,  the page number thing is a little annoying but it's not something I'd return a book for (even a physical book) without it also have some other major flaw - which this book doesn't
