Are hyperlinks Allowed IN book?

Can our books contain hyperlinks? I understood the terms to say that our Product Data (i.e. Book Description) couldn't have links, but what about in the book iteself?

Any info is much appreciated...

Re: Are hyperlinks Allowed IN book?

Yes.

I've put hyperlinks in people's books that I've formatted and my books have them as well. You can also have mailto: links for email addresses.

Re: Are hyperlinks Allowed IN book?

You mean in the body of your text? I can only assume as long as you're not linking to sites that sell stuf. But in my opinion your book should be about what you're trying to convey to your reader. So all of that information should be contained in the book. For example if you're writing a book on how to bake a cake, your knowledge of baking a cake is what your book should be about. I would not distract the reader with any hyperlinks right in the middle of your text. If you want to add more info on lets say, different types of butter, then I would add them at the end.

Re: Are hyperlinks Allowed IN book?

I would assume she's talking about hyperlinks to things like the author's website and other pages that sell her books.

Re: Are hyperlinks Allowed IN book?

My understanding is:

Internal links, within the book, to indices, glossaries, diagrams etc, YES

External links to source material, follow up material, references, YES

External links in the product description, particularly to selling/promo sites, NO

I think there are a number of gray areas, but the general spirit of B&N's intent is clear. I do believe its acceptable to put the book publisher / imprint's web site name on the product / copyright page, i.e.
