Italics on the Nook Simple Touch

During a recent trip to B&N, I checked out one of my titles on the Simple Touch. To my shock and horror I discovered that every line that contained an italicized word was double spaced, making the book look like complete crap.

Naturally, PubIt! doesn't answer emails requesting support, so I air out my difficulties here. Let me be clear: this does NOT occur on other Nook devices--only the Simple Touch. In fact, this issue doesn't even rear its ugly head when viewed in the PubIt! online Nook previewer, for both color and non-color Nooks.

Anyone else noticed this?

Thanks....

Re: Italics on the Nook Simple Touch

Sorry, no. I haven't noticed this. But then again, I don't have the simple touch. I have the original nook and nook color. I'll have to stop by a BN and check mine out on the simple touch though.

Re: Italics on the Nook Simple Touch

The fix was simple: I had been converting straight HTML to EPUB. This is wrong. I saved my Word file to FILTERED HTML, then converted -- that solved the problem.

Phew. You can also use .doc and Word 97-2003. I am glad you figured it.

Re: Italics on the Nook Simple Touch

The only question remaining in my mind.... Why is this only an issue on the Simple Touch?

We'll never know.....

Disregard previous couple of messages. I still have the problem with italics. No one wants to help, so I'm dropping the subject in this forum.

It's slow because it's close to July 4th.

Re: Italics on the Nook Simple Touch

From what I can tell, this increased line spacing on lines with italics is just an idiosyncrasy with the Nook Simple Touch. I finally just said "the hell with it" and went to Barnes and Noble and plinked 89 bucks to buy one to bring home and test. Something else that really looks awful on the Simple Touch are line indentations of .25 inches. This is probably more of an illusion because of the small form factor and minute reading space.

One can only hope that this model of Nook fails in the marketplace, but it doesn't look like it's going to. Probably a wise investment for authors because you'll want to strike a balance of decent readability on all Nook devices, especially considering the fact that Pubit! doesn't offer a Nook Simple Touch previewer just yet. They probably don't think it's necessary, but I'd argue that it is, because this model is different enough from other models that it warrants attention from formatters and/or authors.

As many of you know, reviewers really like subtracting stars when they read a book that is poorly formatted, or one that they perceive is poorly formatted.

[ Edited ]

You are not alone.  I was going to post my problems as a separate thread, but as I searched for "italics." within the forum, I came across your post.

I am having the exact issue with my book, as it appears on the iPad and iPhone Nook apps.  The book contains three sentences with italicized words.  In each instance, there is too much space between the above and below lines.

Nook programmers,

If you follow these boards, please resolve this.

Thank you
