My Nook ST is showing ZERO available memory right out of the box

Yes, I read the fine print: you're supposed to have 240K of freely available onboard memory. That's a pretty fair number of ebooks.

But my brand-spankin'-new Nook is showing ZERO memory.

I am going to the store tomorrow anyhow, so I can get an SD card, but really.

Any feedback on whether this is a fixable glitch?

I think it shows zero available until you sideload something. I remember that's what mine did at the outset. It's a bug, but a fairly minor one.

Try picking up any old free, non-DRM epub book -- from Gutenberg or ManyBooks, for example -- and transferring it to your NST via USB cable. That should change the available display to be accurate.

More as an FYI than anything else -

If by "freely available" you mean, "specifically for sideloading content and not for books downloaded via wifi from B&N" then you are almost correct - it's 240 MB.  In addition to that 240mb you also have another 750mb for downloaded books (from B&N) that you can't see unless you root your device.

What does it mean to "sideload" and "root"? New user here (e.g., fossilized dinosaur, hence the NOOK-a-saurus pen name).

Re: My Nook ST is showing ZERO available memory right out of the box

"Root" is when you get under the software installed on the Nook to take total control of the system.  It voids your warranty and you shouldn't do it unless you have an important reason or like to play around in the guts.

Read this thread for lots of details.

"Sideload" is when you put books on that you didn't buy from B&N (and they didn't load directly so you "loaded on the side.")  It's totally OK, doesn't void your warranty, and how you get books from your library, gutenburg, or other sources.

Read this thread for lots of details.

You don't need to learn to root but you should learn to sideload.

Sideloading is also the method for putting library ebooks on your nook.  It's super easy and good to know how to do.

Thank you for that.  I just saw that I had 234 M available and I thought, "What the heck? What happened to the 750 M?"  We'll see how much my sideloading takes up before I decide if I want an sD card.  I have yet to get a BN free classic that's anything but crap, so I get all my stuff from Gutenberg.

The 750 is for B&N's use only.  You can't get to it. You can't see it.  B&N puts the books you buy direct from them (over wi-fi) there.  If you run low, you'll get a warning message

The 250-ish is for stuff you put on your Nook sideloaded; stuff you load using your PC.

I suggest an SD card anyway.  You can get them dirt cheap and then your sideloaded books are not stuck INSIDE your Nook if there's any problem.  A couple of bit of info...  the nook can handle a Micro-SD card up to 32GB, some people find it hard to get the card in (and once in, you do NOT want to be taking it out, just leave it in), and you will probably need to go into settings, "unmount" the card (not remove, this just takes it off-line for a minute), and format it before you can use it.

I know, lots to learn.
