Look Up Any Word in the Dictionary
Status: NewPlease let readers type in a word to look up, not just the highlighted word on the screen.
This would be especially useful for looking up the Small Caps linked words in the dictionary -- in the original Merriam-Webster these are links to another definition.
I don't care about internet browsing, etc. Not even graphics that nook has over kindle. But words are an integral part of reading novels. The dictionary is very behind in comparison to kindle and sony. Things needs fixing:
1. Allow hyphenated words to be highlighted and looked up. Currently, a recurrently annoying a problem.
2. Searchable dictionary!!!! This would help many shortcomings. On kindle, you can search after a lookup or access dictionary directly. On nook, you reach dead end on many instances...
a nook example:
highlight "denunciation". definition: act of denunciating....now reached dead end.
Other extra things that would differentiate and be helpful:
1. Allow to highlight words in definitions for lookup.
2. Add feature of adding other dictionaries to its lookup. No one currently has this and the current dictionary on nook is a very rudimentary. This would be great where we could add, even purchase at a reasonable price, other dictionaries to the database, even allowing to choose which, even multiple, dictionaries to be used for the current read. It would also be great for language translations, where we could read books in other languages by adding translation dictionaries. Even sony, with its 12 dictionaries, doesn't have the option to add. For example, I want to read War and Peace in its original language rather than a translation.
I think that if the nook wants to differentiate itself and really keep customers, it needs to provide the best resources for reading, over what competitors are providing. Right now, I'm going to my phone over and over because nook falls short because of very basic problems I've mentioned, where kindle and sony would not. It's annoying.
Right now I see the nook as the C- student that's trying to look cool - with the graphics. Kindle right now would be the B+ student. I feel that nook needs to become the A+ student instead and provide high level and quality resources that others don't. But you can't really cut out the features and also fall short on quantity and quality of resources, and expect to persuade with ease of use and graphics. At this moment in time, I regret I didn't get the sony. I feel that the simple touch is made for simple people reading simple books. Come on b&n!
I always read several books at the same time. (I believe a lot of people are like me.) However, because of the CSS defined typesetting of each book is different, especially the margin, everytime when I switch to another book, I have to reset the margin, etc. I think it would be nice if NST can remember my setting for each book, so when I open that book, it changes the settings automatically. The default settings would be the publisher's setting, but when you tweak some, they're remembered.
Dictionary - looking up a chain of words one by one in Dictionary mode activated
Status: AcknowledgedI have just bought Nook Simple Touch mostly for reading books with active use of the built-in Dictionary (I learn English as the second language). To be honest I was surprised that when you have looked up a word - and reading through its definition in the window of M-W Dictionary you cannot look up a word in the text of definition in case something is not completely clear in an explanation. I have some experience with reading and active use of dictionaries with my Kindle Keyboard and iPhone and I was completely sure that this feature is just essential and must-have.
I would like to suggest that Nook users could look up foreign words in a dictionary while reading. I really want to be able to look up French words ![]()
Export and backup highlights and notes from Nookbooks
Status: AcknowledgedI would like a way to export the notes and highlights I make on Nookbooks so 1) I could use them in papers or blogs or other media, 2) sync notes and highlights between my various Nooks and 3) backup the notes or highlights in the event of a need to factory reset said Nooks. This goes for the Nook Color and Tablet as well.
I think users should be able to permanently "give" a book to another nook user. I do this occassionally with printed books. Also, I am happy to purchase a book for a family member rather than give them a "gift card".
So I recently purchased my Nook STR, and I must say that so far I am really enjoying it. There is one thing that I do wish I had a little more control over though. That thing is how a series of books is sorted. Right now to get all of my series in the correct order I must title them something like "Harry Potter 01 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and so on. However, it would be quite convenient if there were a way to order all of the books just using their original titles. In Calibre there is a series option, and I feel that something like this should be able to add an identifier to the file allowing the Nook to recognize it as a specific number in a series. I do apologize if I have just completely looked over a way to accomplish this, but I promise I have spent many hours trying to remedy it. Thanks! -Timm
Repost from general Nook forum ( http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-General-Discussion/N2E-Shelf-management-Feature-Request/m-p/1200474 )
I have both a N1 and N2. I think shelf management was simpler on the original Nook.
Currently on the N2E, when you go to edit a shelf, you must scroll through all of your books. I currently have 20 pages of books. There is no ability to filter or sort this list.
My request is that we be able to filter and sort this list as follows:
Filter : All, Unshelved, Sample, existing shelf name(s). The theory being that when you add new content it does not exist on any shelf and these are the ones you most likely want/need to put on a shelf. Also, I tend to download samples when I find a book as a placeholder. Then when I am looking for new book, the first thing I may want to consider is an existing sample.
Sort: Most Recent, Title, Author, Sample. It should be noted that if you are editing a shelf, you cannot tell if a book is a sample or a full book.
I would like to see more formatting options and finer granularity for the current options.
Only three choices for line spacing is too limiting. And I sometimes can't seem to find a font size I like.
Add options for paragraph indent, spacing between paragraphs, ...
Something similar to Stanza on the iPad.
Thanks.
If the sd card is removed from the nook, all of the books that were on it are removed from their shelves.
This is a very big problem because I may want to use multiple card with the nook, and sometimes when I plug the nook into my computer, it glitches and the sd card is somehow not recognized anymore. To fix this I go to settings and unmount the sd and then take it out and put it back in. But then all of my shelves that were organized are empty.
It has gotten to the point where I don't even use the shelves anymore. I hope BN is going to fix this soon!
The sd card being unrecognized is also very annoying and should be fixed.
I've had my new NST for just a couple of days. I'm really enjoying the reading experience. However, I already feel keenly the lack of one simple feature:
Let me sort the Library by Most Recently Read.
Like many other folks, I frequently have several books and magazines going at once. Whey the NST should give me easy access only to the most recent one is beyond me.
When I saw that I could sort the Library by "Most Recent" I expected that would do it, only to discover that it means most recently purchased, not most recently read. That is really far less interesting to me.
I see that some folks use a "Currently Reading" shelf as a workaround for this lack, but the shelves feature is so clumsy that this doesn't seem like a very practical solution.
I also see that the Nook Guide asserts "the Home screen gives you easy access to the books and periodicals you have recently read or purchased." But when you keep reading about the Home screen you find out that that feature actually isn't there.
Please, B&N software gurus, let us sort the Library on that. And do enhance the Reading Now section of the Home screen so it works the way it (apparently) was originally intended. To me, that would mean a Setting for how many recent titles to display in that quadrant of the Home screen, and it would mean that tapping the Reading Now heading would take you directly to the Library, sorted by most recently read.
Thank you.
Okay, so, I had the N1E for 2 years before picking up my NST last week, and I already have a laundry list of wishes for NST, all things that N1E has.
I'll start by saying that I LOVE reading on the NST. Quick page turns, nice display, great size, it's got all that. It's everything -except- reading that's a problem.
1. Shelving is awful, and also dealt with at length in other threads. Enough said here.
2. PDB format appears to no longer be supported. I've been doing the ebook thing since the Palm Tungsten was the hot gadget, and I have a LOT of old ebooks I want to hang onto. My N1E can read them, why can't my NST?
3. Can't access item details and options if my NST isn't connected to a network. Metadata downloaded to the N1E, why not to the NST? I shouldn't have to hunt down a WiFi network just to check a book synopsis...
4. Time & battery charge don't show when you're reading. Battery charge isn't such a big deal, but when I'm reading on my lunch break, it's sure helpful to know how much longer I've got! Another N1E standard that disappeared.
5. Ewishlist synchronization. Sure, if I'm not connected to a network, I can't see my wishlist, but I should be able to use it when I'm online! The N1E can.
6. You archive from the item details & options, which are only available when online. Can't they be marked for archiving and the operation performed in the background next time you connect? N1E accepts the archive command when offline.
7. Sorting by titles: Every title that starts with "A " or "The " is sorted by that. N1E was smart enough to sort by the second word in those cases.
I was pretty excited to get my NST, but after using it for a little while it's become obvious that everything except the display is a HUGE step backward from the N1E. It's like going from driving a comfortable, dependable car, to walking everywhere in really cute but dreadfully uncomfortable shoes.
Another thing I've found after using STR for a couple of weeks: lack of customizable tap zones in reader. Both-hands page buttons are great, but why this feature is unavailable for tapping in reader? Typically I handle reader with single hand, turning pages by big finger taps. It works right for right hand, but not for left. I imagine it as two options in the reader settings:
- Pages turn by right-left corners
- Pages turn by bottom-top corners
It would make reader be really comfortable for using it with single left hand.
Here are the features that I would love to see in the next (or subsequent updates):
1. Support for more file types
It would be nice to have support for image files (jpg, png, gif) as well as doc and txt. I've seen the Kindle can do slideshows by putting jpgs in a zip file and paging through them like a book.
2. Web browser
I know that a lot of people don't seem to want this, but I would like to use a browser to look up simple websites (not many graphics, no crazy animations). For the people that want it, this would be very useful to have, and for the people that don't it is not going to get in the way of how they used the device before.
3. Fullscreen mode
This would free up the space at the top and bottom of the screen while reading a book (maybe show a small page number in the corner).
4. Lock the current reading book
Sometimes I open multiple books (such as reference books or similar things) and it changes the book I'm reading to that. Being able to lock the book your currently reading so it doesn't automatically change would be a very nice feature.
5. Favorites
The homepage would be much more useful if I had the ability to put a list of favorites (or multiple books I'm currently reading) there.
6. Customize the homepage
Making a device your own is a very nice ability for one to have. It would be nice if the modules (reading now, what to read next, and suggestions) could be move around and swap for others (maybe favorite quotes or the list of favorites from #5).
I believe these would make the NOOK into the best eReader!
Nook STR is quite close to be perfect, but there is one thing I really miss: the recent books list. I read the book for myself, then I read another book for my kid and can't quickly switch back without digging into library. It would be great to have "recent books list" link at the bottom of "Reading now" panel at next firmware update.
I love being able to highlight text and then attach a note to that text. I believe it would be a great addition to able to just have a section on the NST where you could write notes with out having them attached to a certain book or phrase. Whether its making a shopping list or writing lyrics I think it would be a great addition.
Someimes, when you look up a word in the dictionary, it refers you to another word from which the former is derived. The Nook dictionary is useless under such circumstances, since the dictionary is not searchable. Come on, B&N. I purchased a Nook in part because I wanted to support B&N. With with shortcomings like this--as well as not being able to delete books directly from the Nook--you are testing our relationship.
For the next software update, please, please, please add an option to refresh after every page (as does the new Kindle Touch). The quality of the text is of tantamount importance to me and after each page turn it degrades a little more. Also there is ghosting. Some of us do not mind the millisecond black flash after each page turn, especially if it means each page is fresh and crisp. So for next update, please add an option to have the Simple Touch Nook refresh after EVERY page turn. Thank you for your consideration.
