This issue has been reported at least three times, starting as far back as last June:
- sideloaded epubs page numbers wrong on home page
- Home Page - Currently Reading Page Number stuck at 1
- Inconsistency in reporting and remembering page numbers for sideloaded books
Two of those threads are marked as Solved, but they aren't really solved. They contain workarounds, which have turned out to be no better than temporary fixes (at least in my case). I'm posting on this board to consolidate the info in one place, hoping to attract the developers' attention.
For full details, read all the threads. Here's a summary from the third thread, which I posted a few weeks ago:
- While I'm reading the book, it shows page n of 199 at the bottom of the page. Quite correct.
- When I go to Home, the "reading now" box shows me the correct book cover and says "on page 1 of 1."
- When I tap the cover, I get the "Sync to furthest read page?" dialog, which tells me that on this device I'm on page 1 while on another device I'm on page n. (There is no other device involved.)
- When I tap "Yes, Sync to Furthest Read Page" it goes to page 1 of 199.
- If I have created bookmarks, sometimes they've vanished. Sometimes they're still there.
- Which firmware? 1.1.0
- What happened? (see above)
- What were you doing? (see above)
- Does this happen every time? No
- Did this happen with previous firmware? Yes
- Does power cycling the unit solve this? No
- If related to B&N content, does archiving/unarchiving solve this? not applicable
- Does Erasing & Deregistering solve this?* Unknown - erasing and reloading sideloaded books solves it temporarily
- Does resetting to factory defaults solve this?** Unknown
- Have you tried this on other devices? No
I purchase "Preorder" books. When I was using the First Edition Nook, the day the book was published as soon as I got on the network the book would automatically download. The Banner indicating "Preorder"
never worked properly (even after the book was available the banner continued to say Preorder forever).
Now with the Simple Touch, it doesn't recognize that the book is now available. In order to download a preorder book, I have to archive it, resync the library and the select the book to be downloaded. In the library, the book now shows up with a "New" Banner. If you open the book, the "new" banner goes away as it should.
There is one exception, when you display the "Home" page, if the book you were just reading (listing under REAING NOW) displas the Preorder banner.
I selected the Shopping App to purchase some books. I entered the book name and searched. The nook went off and after 1/2 hour said there was a problem with the internet connection.
I was able to purchase the books online and they then showed in my library (on the nook). They also automatically downloaded.
I should not have to use my laptop to purchase books.
I have been in the store several times when my Simple Touch has logged on to the network and then told me that my "free read was completed for the day". Needless to say, since I had just logged on, I had not read anything yet! My store manager told me it was because there hadn't been 24 hours between my last read and this attempt, but it was 28 hours between yesterday and today, and I got the message again. I resent this to a point as driving to a B&N is costly, plus you know I HAVE to have coffee and maybe something to eat while I'm there. Does any one else have this problem? Shouldn't your day be over at midnight, and your new day start at 12:01am? What is the offical defination of a day for Nook readers? I go every single day after work, but my work schedule varies. HELP!
Nook software version 1.1.0
Whenever I power off the Nook, it loses the shelving of my books on the microSD card. The shelves remain, and any books in system memory remain on their shelves, but all the books on the card lose their shelf association.
This is consistent, and happens every time I turn off the Nook.
I have had this Nook since a little before Christmas. I am having an issue with it always freezing and locking up while in the middle of any book. It doesn't matter what book it is...IF the nook is not plugged in - then it freezes up - I can hit the reset button on the back and it will STAY FROZEN until it is plugged in.It works just fine if you keep it plugged into the wall.
I have deregistered the device thinking that maybe that would reset it so it would work.
I have turned it off and left it off for over 12 hours thinking that would reset it so it would work.
Do you have any ideas?
I got my nook after christmas and have had no problems with it. Until today. It is asleep, i can't wake it up. It won't turn off. It isn't responding at all.
Sorry, problem solved.
OK, so I had the Nook 1st Edition and I really loved the wishlist. Every time I would find a book/author I was interested in I would add the book to my Wish List. Since the Wish List was in sync with the BN website, I could monitor the price fluctuations and buy books as my budget allowed. Then I got the Nook Simple Touch. Problem #1: The Wish List is not in sync with BN at all, so my 150 title Wish List did not transfer over from the 1st Edition. Problem #2: Since the Wish List is not in sync with BN that means the prices don't update either. A couple of times I thought I was buying a book for $1.99 or $3.99 and ended up paying $9.99 instead. Now I either have to double check the price on the BN website or do a fresh search on the Nook to make sure I am paying the correct price.
My question is this: What is the point of having a wish list available on the Simple Touch? I find it very misleading that the prices don't update. If you're not careful about checking your bank or credit card statement you could be paying a lot more than you think you are. I love the Nook, but I hate that they changed this feature.
I just recently tried to lend a book to a friend on facebook but she cant get to it bc it wasnt under her pending lend request on B&N account and now i can't get it back to lend it to her again. Is there any way to fix this?
As a librarian, I can not and do not recommend this product to my patrons. The product itself is faulty, and the customer service and return policies are very poor.
My mother loved her Nook Color so much, she offered to buy me either the Color or the Touch. I went with the Touch, thought something simpler would be nice, since I work around computers all day. I was wrong. Within the first 20 days, my Nook started to devour battery power. I was told when I bought it I had 30 days to return it for a new one, but apparently, they changed that. I was offered a refurbished product to replace a brand new one, which I thought was really cheap of them, and not good customer service. Then, I was told it was a software issue, and would be resolved soon, so I held on to my Nook. One software update and two other fixes later, and it STILL drains the battery by the minute, lasting only about 8 hours, instead of the promised 2 months. I was told to call the warrenty dept, but that was a wasted call - they only repeated what had already been said, and also pointed out I'd now had the unit for 90 days. Well, yes I did, but it didn't work MOST of that time, and I only kept it because they kept saying it would be fixed! And yes, the wifi was OFF, it's rarely on, actually.
I've had my NST for more than a month, and this issue has just cropped up in the last week or so. (I read about two or three hours a day, so it's not as if I haven't put the device through its paces.)
Steps to reproduce (sometimes):
- Put the NST to sleep or let it go to sleep while in the middle of reading a book.
- Wake it up.
- Click any of the four page-turn buttons. Nothing happens. (Tapping the screen to turn pages still works as usual.)
- Click the N button.
- Go to Home.
- Immediately return to the book by tapping the cover under "reading now."
- Click any of the page-turn buttons. They work!

We are in Canada and up until mid-December 2011 had no problem purchasing and downloading e-books using my Canadian VISA credit card from B&N. Now we get the error "you must have a U.S. billing address to order". B&N accepted my VISA purchase of an e-gift card, but when my granddaughter attempted to use the gift card, she was unable to download anything because she did not have a credit card with a US billing address. What a joke!! We have been downloading Kindle books from Amazon with no problem. After three on-line chats and one phone call to customer support we are no further ahead and they just say the technicians are working on it. By the time B&N get around to fixing the problem, most of their e-readers will be used as door stops. Has anyone found a work around before I put this thing in the garbage can.
As has been well documented elsewhere, for the last week there have been issues with the Shop function on the N1E reported by multiple, very frustrated, users.
Just thought I'd put it here so maybe, despite Alex being on vacation, whoever is monitoring here for him can give some updates on the issue.
- Which firmware? 1.7 Though rolling back to earlier versions does not seem to help.
- What happened? See: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-First-Edition-Technical/Shop-Button/m-p/1269141/message-uid/1269141#U1269141
- What were you doing? Ditto.
- Does this happen every time? Yep, though some have reported they've gotten functionality back.
- Did this happen with previous firmware? Yep.
- Does power cycling the unit solve this? No.
- If related to B&N content, does archiving/unarchiving solve this? No.
- Does Erasing & Deregistering solve this?* Absolutely not.
- Does resetting to factory defaults solve this?** Not at all.
- Have you tried this on other devices? Yes. No problems with other generations of Nook (N2E, NC, NT)
Noting my previous comments about statuses not being updated, let's see how long it takes for this to be "acknowledged," etc.
BTW, you may want to create an issue reporting area for N1E. Unless the lack of it is part of what is meant by "no longer supported."
I own more books than the Nook Simple Touch can keep resident at one time, so I have gotte into the habit of Archiving a book as I finish it.
This problem popped up some time since Software Version 1.1.0 was downloaded, although I only noticed it today.
I tap the center bottom of the touch screen, then select more to get the Overview/Reviews/Related Titles page which has the "Archive" button. I tap the Archive button, then ok. I get the message indicating the book was successfully archived. After the message is removed, I am left on Overview/Reviews/Related Titles screen.
I tap the Close button and the "Unlock your ebook" screen is displayed requesting my credit card information. I press cancel and it goes away, but it should not have been displayed. I am really concerned about what would happen if I actually entered my data.
This may seem like a small thing, but it shouldn't happen and when my husband and son buy bookd on their IPADs they don't have any problems at all. I like te Simple Touch form factor better and would hate to have to change to get a more reliable product.
Randomly, the Nook requests that you re enter yuor credit card information before opening a book
Status: NewI have purchashed all of my books (close to 600) using the same credit card. The number has not changed and the expiration date has not changed. I have "Require Password for Purchashes" unchecked. and the information under Manage Credit Card has not changed. I have made no purchases using gift chards.
Then You automatically downloaded Software Version 1.1.0 which was to make the page turns occur faster. Now not only do the pages turn faster in a any noticible manner, but I have noticed that when I put
my nook down and come back a few minutes later, the "current" page was a book I read four or five page turns ago.
It does not appear to have anything to do with the actual page number with the original font. It appears completely random.
I came home from vacation and started at the beginning of a series that I previously owned and was going to read over again. This would be a set of books that I bought over at leas 18 months. Most of the books will not open unless I reenter my credit card information. There is no reason why I should have to reenter the credit card once I have purchased the books. This puts my information at risk. Also
my library on the Barnes and Noble Website shows that I own the book, that is all the proof of ownership I need.
If I go online, and archive the book that is giving me trouble, then resync the library. When I unarchive the book it opens with no trouble. It does not ask me for any information.
I know this seems like a simple thing with simple work around, but this doesn't happen in th first edition. There is no reason whyit would be designed this way for the Simple Touch. It is compeletely random.
I have 600+ books. I do not want a product that requires me to be tied down to my lap top to be ensure I can read the books I have already purcashed.
I got a Nook Simple Touch for Christmas, only to have the screen break about a week later. I went to the store today and they replaced the broken Nook, and I re-sort up my account, and did all that stuff, but now all my books are gone and I have NO idea how to get them back. I also had a giftcard registered on the account, but it said that was gone too. I re-entered the gift card, and it still says I bought stuff (original value was $50, now it's like $36 something) So the gift card is back on my account, but no matter what I do, I can't find my books!! I had bought I think 5 or 6.....WHERE DID THEY GO!??!
I have a Nook Touch 1.1.0
My credit card was expired, so I updated the expiration date from the settings menu of my device. When I finished, the expiration date appeared as the month prior. I thought I had made a mistake, but it was an error on the device. The only way to update my information was to do it from the website.
I called customer support. Together we confirmed that I could download a free book. The support technician then asks me if its okay reset my device. Sheesh....
No. No, I don't want to. Why aren't you trying to solve the problem. Why don't you warn me that I am going to lose my highlights and notes first? The device doesn't support exporting them, so of course they are going to be gone. Nope, reset the device....next customer please! Devices should run from more than just a pristine state...they should be designed to, um, use.
On my own I was able to buy some other random book, so the problem isn't with my billing information or my device it is with the book that I was trying to purchase.
