I noticed on my Nook ST that after I turn a page a couple times the fonts get progressively fuzzier and fuzzier, until the point they are more fuzzy and less clear than on my old Kobo Wifi.
I understand this is because the screen only does a full refresh every six pages or so.
My question is, how much fuzziness should I expect? Is it normal for the fuzziness to get to the point where the fonts are less clear than my old Kobo?
I should also add that while some letters get fuzzy, some get more thin, or have spots or pieces of the letters that are much lighter than the rest of the letter.

To me, this sounds like a problem you may want to take up with CS. I've had my NST for over half a year and have never had this problem.

This.
Occasionally on the very last page before the full-flashing-refresh, I notice that the text isn't perfect,on but I never have the sort of degradation you're OP is describing.

A few experiments on my NST reveal that the font and size selections make an enormous difference. You didn't mention what settings you're using. If your device is set to one of the two smallest font sizes and one of the sans-serif fonts, you're more likely to see a noticeable effect.
On mine, the overall impression when it starts to degrade is that some entire lines or areas of the page are fainter than others. In other words, if you look at the screen from a distance, the density isn't uniform.
I usually leave mine set to the third-smallest size and one of the serif fonts. At those settings, the degradation between full refreshes is barely noticeable. Most of the time I don't even think about it while I'm reading.
If you're near a store that sells NSTs, have a look at some display models and see whether their behavior varies from yours. If not, you could try taking a photograph of your screen, uploading it to one of the sharing sites (e.g. flickr), and posting a link here so others can see what you're seeing.

I'm using the Amasis font, however it's spelled, and the very middle font size.

Well, Amasis is one of the skinniest fonts, which may magnify the effect a little bit. But in my opinion you shouldn't be seeing as dramatic a degradation as you've described. You might try Caecilia, which is much bolder than Amasis, and see whether it makes much difference.
When I use your settings on my device, I do notice a progressive change during the first five page turns after a refresh. I wouldn't describe it as fuzzy, though. To me it looks like changes in density, as I mentioned above. Some letters are lighter gray than others. The difference is subtle. I have to be looking for it deliberately.
I think you may have a defective unit. If you can't get to a store, posting a photo would be the best way to get better advice.

I read using Gill Sans on the second smallest font size; the smallest is too small for me except in bright sunlight.
Maybe my eyes just aren't sensitive enough to detct the difference?

I haven't noticed significant degradation, no matter the font size/style. Though I tend not to use the smallest.
Also, for me, "fuzzy" is a little unspecific. Does it degrade to the point of being unreadable, or is it just to the point of being to slightly mis-registered newstype?

Is your Nook updated to the new software? The text is even better now and the refresh is less annoying.

I found that I didn't notice any degradation at all until I got the update. I assume this is because all the update did was bold all the fonts, so now there is more letter to see degradation on.
In my case, the degradation is something I only notice if I'm looking for it, and it doesn't prevent me from reading the text in any way.

I have experienced this, usually after running some other software before the reader. It would only refresh after 8 pages, by which time things were getting ugly.
On restart, the issue seems to have cleared up, and it refreshes cleanly after each page again.
