My computer won't acknowledge my nook simple touch

When I hook up my nook my computer just beeps at me the entire time its plugged in but isn't anywhere to be found and wont charge.  Any ideas???

Is this a Nook that has worked before, or is it new out of the box?

If it came with a wall outlet AC power adapter, try charging it with AC power instead of  the PC's USB port.  It's possible that it needs a full charge before it will cooperate.
