I just got a new Nook Simple Touch a few days ago, and it seems to make a hissing sound while charging and any time the screen refreshes. I do not hear it when the screen is on screensaver mode, only when it is on the main page (while charging) and any time the screen refreshes. The hissing sound is pretty quiet, but I can definitely hear it coming from the back of the device. I was wondering if this was normal or if I should exchange my Nook for a new one?

It shouldn't make any noise.
Try a different wall socket to make sure that isn't causing the problem. Then take it back to the store and let them see and hear it.
If you ordered it over the internet call customer support and arrange for a replacement.

I don't have the AC Adapter, so I've just been charging via USB to my computer.
Since the hissing noise is so faint (I really only hear it in total silence and when I put the Nook near my ear), I'm wondering whether it's just operational noise. I hear it with every screen refresh, as well as while charging. While this might not bother me regularly, sometimes I like to read in total silence, and the faint noise might annoy me then. Since I bought it at a store, I will probably try an exchange while I still have a chance.

Sorry to bump this, but I'm hearing it as well. It's quiet - but far from silent. Whenever I push on on-screen control, I hear a momentary hissing sound. While adding shelves to my brand new NST, every keystroke triggered the sound.
I found my wife's NST, and found the same thing. I belive this is standard operation. If anyone else who has heard it can vouch that the noise stopped when the unit was replaced, please let me know.

I have been noticing the same thing with my Nook. There is a very quiet electronic hiss/clicky noise while charging; but I can only hear it in complete silence, or when I put the device right next to my ear. I can also hear a noise on every page-turn, refresh, when highlighting, or when typing/selecting shelving options -- every time the screen changes, really. But again, only in complete silence or when I'm listening for it, so it's very, very soft.
I also checked a friend's Simple Touch, and the noise is present there, too. Sounds like it's pretty normal, then?

I have the exact same problem. When I first got my Nook, I recall marveling at how it makes absolutely no sound. A couple days ago, though, it started making a high-pitch noise on every page turn or screen refresh (even the arrows at the bottom of the screen saver). It's slight, but really annoying. I didn't notice it on charging; I've only charged it once so far. But it's definitely there on page turns. I thought it was the WIFI at first, because I noticed it when I downloaded a new book, but it was all the screen updates it does while downloading and browsing. I would have noticed the noise before, so it seems like it's definitely a problem, but it's good to know that it doesn't get any louder (at least I hope!). I'd be curious to know if anyone has heard from Barnes and Noble about this. I don't have time to deal with it, but I'd like it to be silent again if it's just an easy exchange.

I have had to replace my nook twice already for technical issues and when I received my replacement nook last month, I realized I could hear the hissing noise as well. It happens overtime I turn a page. It is extremely annoying because now that I know it is there I keep hearing it. My other two did not make a hissing noise so I'm wondering if it is a operational issue. I'm planning on just taking it into the local B&N store to ask the nook specialist. I figure if you paid money for a product, it better work efficiently. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one having this issue.

OK... I have found the answer! I called into the nook support line and asked about the same issue with my nook. After powering down, powering up, resetting it, then hard reset, then confirming I've never dropped it, the representative issued me a new nook. So your nook should not be making a hissing noise at all. You should call in. You paid money for an efficient product, you should get it. Hope this helped.

Right now I'm on my third Nook.
My first Nook had fonts that were extra fuzzy, even after doing the firmware update. I took it back and got a replacement.
The second Nook had a warped screen. I took it back and got a replacement.
My third Nook worked great for about a week. Then the hissing whining noise started. Whenever it's booting up, or the screen is changing, or basically whenever there's a draw on the battery at all, it makes the hissing whining noise.
My third Nook, my third Nook problem. I'm probably going to take this back and just get my money back and be done with Nook. How can I trust their quality with three different problems in a row?

The only problem with getting rid of your nook is that you will lose your books unless you can find another reader with epub capabilities.

There are now plenty of alternatives with epub capability. Sony and Kobo are the most popular and rival the Nook in some areas and surpass it in others. The only thing you would lose is any book with B&N DRM protection.

No. B&N uses the Adobe DRM, so you can use the Adobe software to unlock them for other devices.

B&N uses Adobe Social DRM, and the books currently can't be read on any of the other major ereader devices, all of which do read Adobe ADEPT, which is how library books and books from the Kobo and Sony stores are encrypted.
There currently is a beta version of ADE which can handle the Adobe Social DRM and which allows opening B&N ebooks inside ADE on a PC or Mac.
There is some discussion about whether or not it is B&N, Adobe or Kobo & Sony who have blocked the ability on those readers. Reports say B&N provided the necessary info to Adobe and that Adobe incorporated it into their latest ereader software, but Kobo and Sony have blocked it. Other reports say that B&N has provided the info to Adobe, but Adobe has not yet released the updated version of their ereader software. Some have reported that B&N is the holdup.
In any case, without stripping DRM, there is currently no eink (as far as I know) device other than a NOOK which will read B&N ebooks...

It's normal for it to be like that. The screen for the Nook Simple Touch is not an LCD, and the E-Ink screen makes that noise when it changes any part of the screen.
