Functionality Question concerning Notes

Hello!

I just downloaded Nookstudy and much of it looks promising. One question, though:

I was able to successfully sync Nookstudy with my Nook so that all the books on my Nook show up in Nookstudy (at least the Barnes and Noble ones). However, when I click on the "notes" function in Nookstudy, the notes I've taken ON the nook for those texts don't show up. Is there a way to use Nookstudy to view notes taken using the Nook's onboard note functionality?

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

Unfortunately, our sync between the nook device and NOOKstudy application is in its infancy.  We have not worked out all the touch points, but will continue to do this in the future.  For now, I recommend making notes in the NOOKstudy application and using the enhanced toolset available there.  Apologies for any inconvenience - stay tuned for updates as we continue to work on this.

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

Thanks for the response! I'm glad to know this is bring worked on. I really do love my Nook, and the Nookstudy tool looks VERY promising indeed. That said, I'm happy to be patient while the developers work everything out, especially if I know that the functionality I need is on the way in the future.

Thanks once again for these wonderful products.

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

I'm glad to hear this is being worked on.

I teach in an area where I'm more likely to use primary texts than textbooks. I prefer to read on the Nook, because it causes far less eye strain than reading on a computer screen. It's the best place for me to read and make some minimal notes.

That means, for it to be useful in the academic setting I find myself in, sync is essential. So:

  • NOOKStudy needs to know where I left off reading an eBook I purchased from B&N. Right now it has no clue. (I'm not really sure why. It sees my purchased content easily enough, so I'm puzzled that it can't figure out where I left off. Nook for Android figures it out.)
  • Notes made on the Nook need to be accessible in NOOKStudy, and vice versa. I may prefer to read and make notes on the Nook, but I write at the computer, so those notes need to be available there.

The absence of these features poses a serious usability problem.

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

If you read something in NOOKstudy, we definitely remember the last page and date read.  And as mentioned, we will continue work on the sync between the different platforms - thanks again!

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

I think what acavender was referring to is that there is not a sync between the furthest point read on the NOOK device and the NOOKstudy program.

It would be very nice for NOOKstudy to know where I got to in the ebook on my NOOK device.  I currently am reading two different books on my NOOK.  When I open either one of the books in NOOKstudy, I am directed to the first page of the etext.

In fact, in the NIV thinline Bible currently open on my NOOK, the page numbers in the NOOK do not sync with the page numbers in NOOKstudy.  For example, page 1496 in the NOOK is somewhere in the middle of the book of Matthew (I think Chapter 23).  In NOOKstudy, page 1496 is I Corinthians Chapter 10.   those to points in the Bible are not even close to each other.   So when trying to reference back and forth from NOOK to NOOKstudy, I can't even use the GO TO PAGE feature to find where I left off.

Those two points (no sync for read-to point and no sync in page numbers) is a major functionality issue between NOOK and NOOKstudy.  It has discouraged my use of NOOKstudy as I'm test-driving the new software because I have to search for where I got to everytime I open a new book.

The lack of transition of my notes from NOOK to NOOKstudy has also been distressing.  I carry my NOOK so I don't have to lug around the laptop.   It is convenient to take notes on the NOOK anywhere.   So it would be extremely helpful to sync those notes to the laptop when I get back to the office.

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

Another problem I have with the notes function is that in the NIV Thinline Bible,  all the notes I have taken, whether from the book of genesis, corinthians, or revelations are classified as being in the "Chapter" of revelations.

so the "my notes" table shows every note as coming from the same chapter even though they are scattered around the book.

Not very useful when I need to reference my notes from one chapter in particular for lecture.

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

I absolutely hear you.  As an industry, we are certainly struggling how to make page numbers correspond across devices - despite the reflowable ePub format that adjust pages based on device.  Similar to how a large print hard-cover and small-print paper back have varying page numbers, the various device sizes cause changes in page numbers.  BN.com continues to make improvements in this area - along with better integrating with the rest of the nook ecosystem.

Regarding the functionality - that is something we are working towards as well in coming versions.  As the platforms expand and features become available in some but not others, we will make improvements on this experience.  Thanks for sticking with us during this period of growth - we will get there!

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

Ok - this is definitely a problem I've passed on to the content team and publishers.  (Actually, all of my notes show as from the chapter Revelation).  I will keep you posted on the reformatting.  Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

Talking further to the publisher, they actually have to recreate the file (the table of contents are not structured in the way need to fix the issue you're seeing).  This may take a bit more time, but stay tuned for when we have the fix.  Thanks for your patience with this.

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

Just wanted to check on on this issue with the developer folk:

It'd still be fantastic to be able to synchronize notes between Nookstudy and the Nook for books that are compatible with both (I understand that some textbooks are too graphically intensive to display well on the Nook, but many standard ebooks are also used as textbooks--literary works, for instance). What I'd really like would be the ability for notes made on the Nook device to synchronize with Nookstudy, and notes made in Nookstudy to sync with the device. Is anything like this kind of functionality on the horizon?

Thanks!

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

[ Edited ]

This is about transferring notes.

I don't own a NOOK and just bought my first two e-books. I have both NOOK for Mac and NOOK Study for Mac installed, so I read (and write) everything either on paper or my MacBook Pro 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). My intention was to see if I liked e-books enough to purchase a NOOK. I also don't have wifi and it's annoying to have to go on line every time I open NOOK Study--and that may push me toward a NOOK. We'll see.

The NOOK for Mac is still in beta, and kept crashing when I first installed it. The tech suggested uninstalling NOOK for Mac and installing NOOK Study as the work-around, which I did. I used it for several days and really, really liked it. The two e-books I'm reading are mass market fiction, but I'm analyzing them for a course I might teach and I got very attached to the note function and the idea of organizing the courses I'm developing in separate folders. NOOK for Mac is less navigable, since you can only open one book at at time, and if it has a note function, I haven't found it. The other course I'm organizing on NOOK Study is on an ahnentafel system I developed and can only have my own original material. I plan to teach this system first online.

So, a couple of nights ago, I was reading merrily along in one of the two books, with both open on tabs, and I paused to make a note. When I went to save the note, NOOK Study crashed. I had been using Find to track a character through the story and several times it had balked, suddenly telling me that the phrase I was looking for was not in the book (when it was). When this had happened before, closing the book and opening it again cleared it up. But this time, I was using the note function, not Find, and NOOK Study totally crashed, caught in a loop. After a minute, I force closed it. Then I went on line and logged into my B&N library, and opened NOOK Study. It was still crashed, but this time it was looping on loading the library. After a couple of minutes, I force closed it again. NOOK Study was red in the Activity Monitor. I repeated this process several times. Crash on open, red in Activity Monitor, force close.

I usually work in the dead of night, so all this happened about 3:30 am, when there is no tech support. And, of course, nothing in the FAQ to explain this.

Meanwhile, in my B&N library on Safari, the book I hadn't been reading (but had had open on the other tab, to consult its wonderful maps) and that wasn't where I'd been making the note that coincided with the initial crash, had disappeared from the active book folder, which had said (2) and now said (1). After my initial panic ($30 book missing), I did locate it in the archived book folder and moved it back to active. Then I uninstalled NOOK Study (including the dmg), logged off B&N, closed every program (including a force close of NOOK Study, open in case it really had needed 20 minutes to load the library), emptied the trash, and turned off the computer.  Booted.

First I opened Safari and logged back into B&N, where the $30 book had disappeared from active again. It was back in archive and I moved it, logged out, logged back in. I did this a few times. It wouldn't stay in active, so finally I left my library open while I reinstalled NOOK Study from the zip file. When I went to open it, it was still crashed and stuck on loading the library. I repeated this process a couple of times (close all, uninstall, reboot, reinstall). Each time the $30 book would flee to the archive and each time NOOK Study would crash while loading the library. I tried it after logging off B&N and closing Safari. I never got to the screen where you log in the newly installed program. On one of these attempts, I got a message asking if I'd like to update NOOK Study and I said yes, but it made no difference. Another time, I deleted the zip file and downloaded a new one from B&N. No difference.

Meanwhile, I was getting really pissed and not so impressed with the e-book format. The book I'd been reading had crashed at a point of climax and if I'd bought the $21 print version, I wouldn't have been fuming about what happened next. I'd also have had more patience if I'd had a way to read my library online. One thing was different: NOOK Study was now black in Activity Monitor but still caught in the library loop, and still had to be force closed. So I uninstalled NOOK Study entirely, closed, rebooted, etc, then downloaded and installed NOOK for Mac, crossing my fingers since it hadn't been stable last week. By this time, it was 6:00 am, which is even past my bedtime.

NOOK for Mac worked for reading the book that crashed and my $30 book stayed in active on the Web, but it felt really clunky. I'd gotten used to NOOK Study's interface and it felt awkward to only have one book open at a time and be unable to make notes or toggle to the wonderful maps. I stayed up to call tech support when they opened (late, by at least twenty minutes). Someone there walked me through downloading and installing NOOK Study and this time I got to the log-in screen and it loaded my library and it hasn't crashed. Yet. But the techie, a PC person who didn't know the Mac OS or even the difference between quit and force quit and the wisdom of sussing out all stray dmgs and emptying the trash, didn't have me do anything different than I'd been doing on my own. What was different was this: NOOK for Mac was resident on the system; this time instead of force closing NOOK Study, I left it open in its infinite loop; and after closing everything else, I just mashed the power button instead of shutting down on the Apple menu.

Both NOOK programs have been behaving and the $30 book has stayed in the active folder on the Web.

But. A few minutes ago . . .

. . . when I went to make a new note in the wandering $30 book, I discovered that NOOK Study thought this was my first note ever. Then I looked at my library and there's a second copy of it there. I can't open that copy, but it does have attached the copious notes I'd already made.

So, my question is this: How do I transfer the notes from the copy that won't open to the copy that will?

Cheers,

DeeToo

Re: Functionality Question concerning Notes

Make sure the email address associated with your B&N account is consistent across all Nook platforms.  If they are not the same, you may have to unregister and reregister the oddball platform.  Then, resync.
