It's been sketchy for the last wek or so. Sometimes it's fine, and other times the application slows to a crawl and becomes virtually unresponsive. I sent an email to support a while ago but never got a response. The other day it became so slow it crashed my computer and then when it came back up the textbook wouldn't open at all. I had to delete it and re-download it. Luckily my highlights and notes were all there but still, when I'm studying for an exam I don't expect to have to take an hour-long unscheduled break because of technical difficulties... with my TEXTBOOK.

Could you please provide more information? What version of Windows or Mac OS are you using? what version of Flash/Adobe Air? And what else did you have running at the time?
Also, if you are having that much trouble, B&N does provide telephone technical support. 1-800-THE-BOOK
You have not explained what you mean by being unable to take notes. Select some text and say "Note" from the submenu that appears. Does this work for you?
I understand the application is slow, but that is different (but still important) from being unable to take notes.
I would recommend upgrading Adobe Flash and AIR.
