I was poking around the app store last night and saw the Movie Gallery app. I though it looked interesting but wanted to do a bit or research on DVD Catalyst before I downloaded. Today I go back to the app store and MovieGallery is nowhere to be found. Even the link from the folks who made DVD Catalyst brings me to a B&N 'sorry we can't find that item' page. What gives? Thanks.

Sorry, its B&N's developer system.
I have been trying to get paid through them, and supposedly they ran into an issue with my banking details without notifying me, so I had to update it. Unfortunately, their system then turns off my account for a few days.
It should be back online in a few days, I'm sorry for the inconvenience,
Mitch,
DVD Catalyst/MovieGallery/ImageGallery dev.

If you are interested in putting DVD movies on your Nook Color or Tablet then DVD Catalyst in combination with MovieGallery is the right combination. I have been using MovieGallery for a while and really like the presentation for commercial movies because you can use the DVD cover art (eiher by scanning your DVD cover to a JPeg or by downloading from the websites) as the movie file's image. I also find that I can select a snap shot of a home made MP4 file and if named exactly the same as the video clip Moviegallery will display that JPeg as the image. Recently I decided to put some commercial DVD movies on my Nook Color. I have Roxio Creator 2011 and 4Media HD Converter 6 for video convertion. However, I purchased DVD Catalyst ($10 at the developers web site) because it has been optimized for the Nook Color and Nook Tablet. So far; seven movies converted and installed with no problems and it is exactly easy to do. While you wait for the developer to get re-established on the B&N App store so you can get MovieGallery visit ToolsforMovies.com, buy DVD Catalyst and start converting your DVDs.

2 days ago, my account was re-activated, so MovieGallery (and ImageGallery) is back in the appstore again. Yesterday, I finally uploaded the update to MovieGallery, which is currently in the approval process.
Rather than having to wait another week for an approval on an updated product description, I just replaced the installer for now, so this should be live next week.
I am sorry for taking so long for this update, but I do believe it was worth the wait though. I'll be posting a guide on my website this weekend for it, which will explain the new features, but here are some of the highlights:
*Folder selection. If you use ImageGallery, or have used MovieGallery 1.3.x on a device with access to the Android Market, you are already familiar with the folder selection part. Your movies will be sorted based on the folders they are located in.
*Thumbnail generation. One of the most asked questions regarding MovieGallery is about how to add images to it. Rather than using the color-blank placeholder images, MovieGallery now pulls a thumbnail for videos you do not have images for, making it a little nicer to look at.
*Write name on image. You can have MovieGallery write the movie name on the image, so if you use the thumbnails rather than your own images, you can easily differentiate between different episodes of a tv show for example.
*Volume and Brightness controls during video playback. While volume isn't an issue on the NOOKcolor or NOOKtablet, the brightness is a bit harder to change during video playback, so I added buttons for it.
*Runs smoother. I've made quite a few changes to make things run a bit faster. One thing, if you run it the first time without using your own images, it will create a thumbnail image for the videos, which takes about a second or so per video, making it appear slower. However, once the thumbnails are created, flipping through the images will be quite smooth.
And lastly, something I'm really excited about, I added sample videos to it, but rather than including them into the actual program (and thus making it huge) they stream from my website.
If you have your NOOKcolor/NOOKtablet connected to wifi, it will look for the trailers, and load the cover images for them, so they appear like normal videos in MovieGallery. When you play them, they will start playing after a second or 2, without taking up space on your NOOK.
As mentioned above, the update is (finally) uploaded to B&N and is currently awaiting approval.

Got it on the second archive/unarchive cycle. B&N really needs to get the update plan working!
Anyway, I specifically like the ability to focus MovieGallery on one folder rather than pulling videos from all over my Nook Tablet. I do miss the little "down arrow" button that took you back to the menu bar. I see that by long pressing on any blank portion of the display brings up the menu bar but the "down arrow" was so much more obvious.
Anyway; nice update. I do like MovieGallery for managing my commercial movies.

I ran into something else earlier.
On my Nooktablet, I "deleted" MovieGallery, and guess what? I ended up having to purchase it again !
That was a new one for me, but it gets even better.
ANyway, I used my NOOKcolor to do the purchase again, and I got 1.3.3
I did an install on my NOOKtablet a few minutes later, and I got 1.2.6 ????
Anyway, the button I had for the settings in the previous version was a bit of a hackjob. Because there is no actual settings button on the NOOK, I added that button for it, but it was always bugging me, so I made it into a long-press.
You are the second one who brings it up, so I'll probably end up bringing it back in the next update.

MovieGallery updated perfectly on Charlene's Nook Color. It is just the Nook Tablet that needs some serious work on the update process. The point about the "button" is that many Nook users are like me, new Android users and what seems logical and natural to many others is not always that apparent to us.

How do you turn scanning off? I do not find the selection on the settings menu. Not a bid deal, just wondering. I appreciate that you put in a selection to turn the WiFi streaming off.

Well, people wanted to be able to delete files on the device. This is the consequence.
If you choose delete instead of archive your file is gone (although there is warning you have to confirm).

I don't think you understand me correctly. I deleted a purchased app from my device, not a file or anything, but an app I paid for. Along with deleting the app from my device, it also deleted the purchased app from my account, forcing me to purchase it again. It was my own app, so its not that big of a deal, but still.
On all other App Markets on all other devices, the apps you purchase remain attached to your account, even if you deleted them from your device. Apple iTunes, Amazon Market, Android Market etc, all keep your apps attached to your account, even if you get rid of them completely.

I shuffled some settings around to organize it a bit better, but for some reason that setting doesn't show up.
I'll get it fixed in the next update. Along with the dedicated NOOK button ![]()

Mitch,
I have to echo the desire for the down button to return to the menu.It WAS more convenient.
Also, there seems to be a bug on the update related to setting a custom picture for the background. The app allows me to set the background of a photo in my gallery, and the program continues working until I exit the program and try to re-enter. Then I get an error that will prevent use of the gallery. My only recourse is to archive and reinstall. This happened each time I tried to customie with a photo, until I gave up and went with a solid color background.
Also, it there a way to get rid of the honeycomb backgound on the first screen that appears (with the exit and gallery icons) every time you open movie gallery? I don't recall that screen always appearing for a few seconds in the prior version.

Ok, you are #3, so I'll add the button back in the next update.
The first screen stays visible for a few seconds because its scanning your NOOK for video files and images. With the previous version, it didn't do that all the time, which caused complications for some people regarding missing videos, or videos that were displayed and no longer there.
I will also look into the custom image part. I actually didn't change anything on that in this version, so I didn't fully test that part unfortunately.

Mitch:
I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Movie Gallery and wanted to give you some feedback. First of all, thanks so much for your hard work and your awesome responsiveness to the user community here! You rock!
1. The browsing of movies is much smoother and faster, nice job! Even with larger images and added many more movies, it works great!
2. Love that you have added folder orgaization functionality. Nice job! I haven't gotten into it too much yet but plan on organizing my movies into folders. I also like that the folder browser hides itself, and is not visible all the time while in the movie gallery.
3. Room for user interface improvement: as a few people here have mentioned, the new interface however has made it a little more difficult to browse the first time you use it, and I feel like it has become a little less intuitive how the controls work. I now get that the long hold pulls up the MENUs, and a single tap brings up the folders. If you don't mind, I have a few suggestions. For what it is worth, I am not a technical person, but I do do design in my day job... Please see what you think:
A. I really like the simplicity of not seeing a ton of control buttons on the browser when you are just browsing movies. Similar to iTunes or say the Kindle Fire carousel interface, it's simple... In fact I wish that we didn't even have to see the play button always on when we are just browsing through the movies... Ideally, if you could make *all buttons go away* and just browse, but pull up the menu when needing something that would be perfect...
B. Instead of adding more buttons, or having too many different menus that open up when you long hold vs. single tap, etc. How about: (i) when in the standard movie gallery browser don't show any of the buttons, just show the movie covers which you can browse by swiping (this would be similar the Kindle FIre carousel) (ii) Have any kind of tap or even a long hold at the bottom of the screen always do the same thing, which is open up a full set of menus which would include all of the functions that you might want to access from the gallery: "Play", "Folders" (which would launch the folder browser), "Main Menu" (which is what Back currently does, send you back to the splash menu), "Add Name" (adds the name text to the video cover), and "Exit" (iii) other than the long hold or tap at bottom to bring up the menu, the only functions in the gallery area above could be swiping left and right to navigate the movies, and tapping in the middle of the movie to launch that movie.... IMHO this would simplify the interface, make the the movie browser screen look super clean (basically no buttons), and make it very intuitive to somebody not familiar with the the program, where any touch at the bottom of the screen always brings up the full menu...
C. As the first image users see, the splash screen is kind of a big part of a user's first impression. So I think maybe it's worth the investment in some graphics, something very minimal and simple... Like the cateyes logo on a black background and maybe a moviegallery graphic with custom typography? Similar to some splash screens for things like ROVIO or HULUPLUS, or Pandora... Like a previous poster, I also wish I didn't have to see the honeycomb splash screen everytime the program launched, or the splash screen were just black... Black, with maybe the cateyes DVDCatalyst Logo large and spread almost fully across the screen in the middle or near the top...? Just one thought... The Movie Gallery text could then be small and integrated at the bottom with the website info and the "Exit", "Gallery", and "Reset" buttons in a very simple graphic bar, nothing too special maybe even grey buttons to match the MENU buttons that currently open with a long hold on the main gallery?... Not sure, as I know this is an individual aesthetic preference on what looks good as a splash screen, but I would prefer it to be simple and black... One other thought is: would it be possible to make the background that is assigned to the Movie Gallery also be the same background that is assigned to the Splash page? (so if someone wanted a background image they could have that, or if somebody wanted it to just be Black or White, the background would just always match whatever the Gallery is set to...?
D. One last suggestion, I kind of wish the graphics of the buttons in the video player looked a little simpler. Like simple squares instead of the rounded squares with the black circles inset with white icons... It looks a little too busy IMHO... Would it be possible not to have buttons at all, and just "ICONS" floating on a transparent background? Similar to what the iPhone music player of iTunes players look like? just white play, fastforward, rewind, etc. icons floating on a transparent backdrop?
Anyway, please see what you think, these are just my personal suggestions on how the graphic interface might be improved, this is one of the best apps, always highly recommended to other nook owners, and it has a permanent place on my homepage... But I think a few of these interface tweaks would make it even better, a tiny bit more polished looking, to go a long way towards making this one of the premier apps on the device...

Hi RoboTecture,
Thank you for your comments.
The interface is always the hardest part of any application. The code behind it, while sometimes tricky, is a lot easier.
A. eliminating all the buttons is a bit complicated. I want to keep the 1-tap and play, and I have 2 areas I can use to trigger something. The NOOks do not have a hardware button for settings, so I have to use one for settings, and another for playing the movie. I will try and see if I can do something with screen areas, such as something tapped on the left or on the right, but keeping it intuitive is also something have to keep in mind. I do admit that the way it currently is in this version (1.3.3) is 1 button-press too many to get to settings.
B.the 1-tap play is something I think most people whould find important. I could put som other functions in the menu, and tap on the image to play the movie. Would that work?
C.I actually added settings to the splashscreen, but unfortunately "forgot" to connect it to something. I didn't include a wallpaper change option for it, but will do so.
D. I can remove the grey box from the buttons, but its a damned if you do, and damned if you don't scenario. For some people the grey box area makes it easier to see, for others, its a waste of screen space.
Thank you for your suggestions. I will read them through again tomorow (been a long day today for me already) and will try and come up with something based on your suggestions.

Hi Mitch: Thanks for the reply and for always being so responsive to the nook community! I think there used to be an option to just tap in the middle of the video and it would start playing... I actually thought this was a veRY simple an intuitive way to do the play... Is there a way to add this option back in? This is something I really miss in the new version... I understand this is personal preference but I feel like the always on play button is unnecessary, if people see the cover, they will anyway press the dvd cover to play... it's just like opening a book in the nook library or on the home page, imho first instinct is to press on that movie on the carousel to play it... I would actually prefer, if we were to have one button at the bottom that this button open up the settings menus and look similar in style to the Settings buttons.... that way the set of buttons look like they go together...
You are welcome,
Putting the tap to play method back in is quite easy. I'll see if I can add some clean way for accessing the settings. Maybe a button in the far corner or something. Would that work?
