I have a Nook tablet and a subscription to Sunset Magazine (not purchased through B & N).
Sunset Mag offers subscribers a concurrent tablet version but the app to access has to be acquired through B & N. There is no app for this in the store. I emailed Client service to ask how I get the app and got an unhelpful stock response about "subscribing to both editions" , "your 14 day free trial" and "your credit card will not be charged until after the free trial".
Do I really have to have to two subscriptions? After all the app and tablet version is a service offered and paid for by Sunset not by B & N. Additionally this has the potential to be a billing nightmare - my subscription to Sunset is a gift and not under my control. I have no any idea what it costs.
Does it work this way on all magazine apps?

That is how it worked for my People Magazine subscription. I was not charged after the 14 day free trial and the magazine arrives on my tablet automatically each Friday. I love reading People on my tablet - it is interactive and has a lot of added bonus features.

Sunset magazine is like Time Magazine -- if you buy the print version, you get the tablet version and the online digital version with it for free. For Time Magazine, when I ordered the NT table edition I received a notification on how to get credit for my Time print subscription. Essentially, you click on the subsription in your library, and there you can click to connect it to the print subscription you already have. I already had a Time Magazine online account since I manage my print subscription online, so the information requested was about that online account. You might need to create a Sunset online account to do the same. See https://secure.customersvc.com/servlet/Show?WESPAG
E=am/tablet/template/login.jsp&MSRSMAG=SU&MSDDMOFF ... Once I connected the Nook digital edition subscription with my print subscription, the NT subscription changed to "Discounted Price for Active Print Subscribers: FREE" rather than the prior normal subscription price. When I connected my NT the subsription showed up as "New" and then I downloaded the current edition. It's pretty slick -- looks very much like the print version, has more content (videos, etc.) and is easy to navigate once you get the hang of what they're doing. I suspect Sunset is the same since they're both published by Time Inc.

Thank you for your responses but I'm still not clear.
I understood the app to be a portal to the Sunset web site which allows me to download the tablet version of the magazine.
It seems that I have to subscribe to the B&N emagazine version (which is free because/while I have a print subscription) and that version of the mag is pushed to me by B & N rather than by Sunset. Am I correct in this assumption?
Do I actually get an app? I see a stand alone app is available for Kindle and Ipad. Also how do B & N know if my print subscription is cancelled and what happens to my B & N esubscription at this point?

There is no "app" for Sunset (or Time, for that matter, or others I believe). The table version of the magazines appear in the library/magazines area. When you subscribe to the B&N Nook magazine and link it to your actual print subscription (as described in my first post), the issue is automatically downloaded to your library/magazine area on you NT by B&N when it becomses available. So no, you do not get an app, and you don't have to do anything difficult to get the new issue (you only have to go to the library/magazine area and let the new edition download). Sunset likely notifies B&N when your print subscription is cancelled because you are notified when you sign up for the Nook subscription and link the purchase to you print version that if you no longer have the print version, you no longer qualify for a free table version, and you will then be charged the usual Nook magazine subscription charte unless you cancel the Nook magazine (tablet) subscription.

I fear, if my print subscription is cancelled (a gift outside of my control) the esubsription will no longer be free, a fee will kick in, I get an automatic download of the mag, automatic billing and the problem of dealing with outsourced client service if I decide I don't want to subscribe out of my own pocket and want my money back - the boards have plenty of horror stories of problem billing queries.
I am not sure about unauthorised/automatic downloads of anything, whether updates, email or magazines unless I want it. I'd rather a notification which can be accepted or not.
It would be easier to have an app available in the B&N store (thus meeting the curating requirement) and to avoid the dual subscription altogether - this is how it works for kindle , Ipad and Galaxy Tab.
I would really like to have the tablet version of Sunset so I'll have to think about it.

Again, yes the Nook subscription will no longer be free if you don't subscribe to the print version. By "buying" the Nook subscription you are authorizing the purchase and download whenever the new edition is available. You can easily cancel the Nook subscription if you no longer pay for a print copy. It's as easy as logging into your Nook account on your PC, going to your Nook library, clicking on the current edition of the Nook magazine, and then clicking "cancel your subscription" link and following the instructions to cancel the Nook subscription. The integrared nature of having the subsription in the Nook library is far better, in my opinion, than a separate applicaton. This concludes my comments.
