Another 1UP for the nook tablet over kindle fire

[ Edited ]
The nook tablet has also added a microphone... There is a "read and record" feature on children's books so that parents can record their own voice reading a book to a child and use that in the "read to me" feature of those books so their kid can play it back later... Very cool, thinking outside the box! 1UP! Does kindle even have a "read to me" feature? I can see a number of other possible uses for a microphone in future nook apps... Like maybe recording lectures, or taking notes... Or recording voice notes *in book* or for note taking apps like evernote... They should turn the nook into a student tool for note taking while also having nook study capabilities IMHO...

Actually, take it one step further: get the "google translate" app available on the iphone to translate voice to other languages... Or any number of other voice recognition apps to allow people to talk to the device...

Actually: one other thought that just occurred to me: language learning apps... I was just at a Barnes and Noble cafe today (preordered my nook tablet while there... :smileywink:) and I noticed on the table ad stand an ad for Rosetta stone... How cool would it be to develop a Rosetta Stone for the nook? You could even use the microphone to allow voice recording and playback in language learning software...

I wouldn't get your hopes up with Rosetta Stone, but the mic is there and can be used my any app developers. Hopefully, that means we will get apps using it. I am hoping for Skype.

Love the possibilities open with the addition of a mic. But don't we need a camera if you are going to Skype? Just asking?

No, Skype has a voice-only option - at lest it does when I use it on my laptop.

You could do voice chat with Skype and text through Skype also.

I would LOVE it if the new NookTablet has voice-to-text ability! I use that all the time on my Droid phone and new desktop for everything from chat, to Google searches, to emails, to taking notes... the list goes on!

I hate typing on little touchscreens so if this feature was opened up, that alone would make me run out immediately and knock over any little old ladies in the way to get the first NookTablet!

I would think the mic will make many things possible:

* Voice chat

* A personal assistant such as Siri on iPhone or Iris for Android

* As you mentioned, voice-to-text

* Those silly Karaoke apps

* etc.

I tried to use that voice-to-text system and found it more trouble than it was worth. You have to train the system to your voice. My voice has actually been tested by the government to determine how clearly I spoke. It was for a special job. People say I sound like a news broadcaster but the voice-to-text typed the wrong words anyway. I practiced and practiced until I thought I’d never want to speak again then finally gave up. It was easier to type than go back to make corrections.
