B&N is making money from the NCs and NTs by being a value-added content provider.

On the contrary, I do get it. But aside from books (depending on your criteria, even that's debatable), exactly what content area is B&N superior in? Apps? Definitely not. Videos? No. They provide access to Netflix and Hulu+ which pits them against Amazon's prime videos very well. But Amazon also sells digital video content where B&N doesn't so that puts Amazon ahead in the video department. Music? No, they don't appear to sell any digital music. Audio books? No. Last time I checked their audio book player couldn't even begin to compete with Amazon's Audible.com player.(Here's a hint: It's important to be able to automatically pick up where you leave off - not be sent back to the beginning of the book next time you open it.)

I guess what I'm trying to say is: If you're going to provide a walled-garden experience as B&N is trying to do, you need to have a larger garden to play in than B&N has or many of your garden party attendees won't stay at the party very long. They'll find somewhere else to play - say along the river or in the orchard or maybe even in the robotic factory next door.

How much patience do expect people to have? The Nook Color's been out for almost a year and a half now. Wouldn't you expect a lot of the problems to have been addressed in that time?

Really thats subjective, the issues.

For me Ive had a NC and I sold it, (which you can too) on Craigs or ebay. I in turn bought a NT (16GB) for 200 and im very happy.

I had 2 Kindle's, and a Kindle Fire, and although the ecosystem is pretty fleshed out, its got no soul, to me at least, where the nook, I love.

So I had tech issues with the NC, apps were slow, frozen sometimes, etc. So i sold it and bought the tablet.

Why not do the same?

Only you can change your situation, quickly, if you wish. Sorry, but no one here will do it for you.

Why bother posting that crud? Are you investors?

If not, what does it accomplish other than spread fear and uncertainty.

Your here because you like BN, no?

Because I'm not interested in changing my situation. I'm satisfied with the set up I currently have on my Tablet. I'm simply attempting to have a discussion about the content B&N provides and how it compares to other offerings. Seeing flaws in a system and wanting/being willing to discuss them doesn't automatically mean someone is unhappy enough to jump ship.

SOOO.......SORRRRRY.

Yes, I am.  An extremely minor one, through my retirement plan (or what was to be my retirement plan).  Mainly, though, I'm invested via my ownership of two Nook Colors.

Re: Barnes & Noble To Take On Amazon With A New 8GB Nook Tablet

From Nasdaq :

(RTTNews.com) - Barnes and Noble has announced that their new 8GB Nook tablet is set to hit the market at $199. The revamped e-reader will throw its hat into the tablet ring with a dual-core 1GHz processor, improved 11.5 hour battery life, 16 million color VividView display and access content exclusive to the Nook.

"For any customer who likes to read digitally, watch movies or TV shows, browse the web, or help their kids read and learn through interactive books and apps, our new $199 NOOK Tablet with 8GB is the best product value on the market," said William Lynch, Chief Executive Office of Barnes & Noble, in a news release.

The new $199 Nook joins Barnes and Noble's range of lower priced Nook e-readers, including the Nook Color at $169. It will provide new competition to the similarly priced Kindle Fire from Amazon, who is currently the number two seller of tablets behind Apple

Most of the press is good news, if not all sans the doomsday naysayers.

This weeks app update on thursday should be interesting as dev's flock in to cash out on the new customers. Gameloft already dropped premium titles to 99 cents, and updated today as well.

Nook Color at $169 is rediculous, and if it werent overshadowed by brand confusion it would sell a ton at that price.

As the esteemed Roustabout noted in another thread, the NC at $169 is the real news. At $200, the jump to $250 isn't that much. $170 starts to get the bargain-minded interested. I was under the impression that B&N were getting ready to wind down the NC, but if it starts selling, I wonder what their strategy will be?

512MB *may* gimp the NTL (nook tablet lite) but the processer should keep it in the game.

Not any more than it gimps the NC. For "pure" B&N apps, it's proabably OK. The processor and display will make up for a lot. It depends as much on how it's marketed -- as the "multimedia powerhouse" the NT ads promise, or more of a reader-focused slant.

Nook color makes up for a tremendous share of one star reviews in the app market due to tech issues, the dev;s have a hard time keeping up with all these models.

Given that the NC was on the market for much longer, and the relative newness of the NT, I hardly find it surprising that there are more reviews -- positive or negative -- by NC owners.

I wish BN the best, I want them around for a long time. :smileyhappy:

Me too. Input from actual owners is invaluable to any manufacturer. The worst is to get no feedback, or only hear from the go-along crowd. The smart companies take negative input about product functionality into consideration along with the positive.

Mrs_Gatz, quoting the article: It will provide new competition to the similarly priced Kindle Fire from Amazon, who is currently the number two seller of tablets behind Apple

If I'm remembering correctly from another post somewhere, the number three spot went to Samsung and the fourth one went to B&N. I think it's significant that the top three spots went to tablets that either contain or have access to better content than the Tablet and Color do.

Its all good :smileywink:

That depends on what B&N's goal is. Lately their marketing seems to indicate that they're aiming for a multimedia, general purpose audience. If that's the case, things aren't really that good for them. They're not horrible, but they're not really great either. They're simply lacklustre.

I suppose you could focus on the long-term, but those 5 year graphs aren't particularly cheery.

Except that those were worldwide sales numbers.

Meaning the gigantic tech company Samsung sold only ~200k more tablets in the entire world than BN sold in the US alone. I'd argue that BN is definitely the big news in that supply report, as it clearly demonstrates how successful the company's turnaround from book retailer to book retailer/gadget company has been.

But I forgot, capitalism magically became a zero-sum game in the last year so BN is actually failing magnificently, right?

I think you've got me mixed up with someone else. I've never said they're failing magnificently. I've simply pointed out flaws that I believe will cause problems for them down the road if they're not addressed - especially if they're wanting to be a gadget company as well as a bookseller.

Re: Barnes & Noble To Take On Amazon With A New 8GB Nook Tablet

To be fair, the tablet rankings that have the Samsung galaxy at #3 are quoting supplier data. Given that the iPad, kindle fire, and Sansung galaxy supplier numbers are for devices that are available in many countries while the nooks are only available in the U.S., those figures might not be an accurate reflection of the nook's standing as a count of U.S. market share. I think the nook is probably significantly higher as a percentage of ownership if you were to look at U.S. sales last year than the Samsung Galaxy... Speculating... Samsung will probably do much better internationally for example in countries where android phones like Samsung are dominant along side the iPhone... What BN is doing now is preparing expansion of the nook to international markets, where if successful, they would get alot of new customers... That's the next frontier they need to build in...

The iSuppli figures tell a different story when you look more closely ~ skimming down to the table, B&N is 4th in 2011 as a whole and 4th in Q4, Samsung is 2nd in 2011, 3rd in Q4. Samsung's market share in Q3 was 11%, while in Q4 it slid to 8% ~ B&N market share in Q3 was 4%, while in Q4 it rose to 7%.

So the Nook Color price cut ~ in the event, to the price point of the more powerful Kindle Fire ~ and introduction of the Nook Tablet at the old Nook Color $250 price point was successful in growing market share ... just not the runaway success of the Kindle Fire, jumping right into the 2rd place in Q4 with the Kindle Fire launch.

If the price cut of the Nook Color appreciably below the Kindle Fire price point, and its replacement at that price point by the NT8G helps B&N sustain its forward momentum in the market, it will be #3 sometime in the first half of the year.
