WiFi delivered library books next year

[ Edited ]

There was a small tidbit in a WSJ (*twitch*) article that a lot of people here will find interesting.

"The Nook can only load library books via a clumsy USB cord transferring process. A Barnes & Noble spokeswoman said the company plans to offer Wi-Fi downloading of library books early next year."

Carry on.

That's encouraging news.  I hope that goes for us NC owners as well.

I can't think of any reason why I should have to connect to a PC for anything unless there is no wi-fi connection available.

Eh, I'm glad I did it because it has so much perceived value, but I truly don't see this as a big deal, especially for the eink devices.

I'm looking forward to this one!! I can't always hook up to a computer to transfer files and when I do, my usb is in a very awkward place to get to. I've been loving dropbox. Just library books remain.

ADE sometimes acts up when I hook up the NC so being able to bypass that step would make life so much less stressful. :smileyhappy:

On YouTube videos, it was stated that they intend to have a video store as well, that the tablet's video player capabilities are prepping for an eventual nook video store...

Makes sense, as some of the options for the storefront on the home screen make very little sense right now (especially the music one).

It would be nice to download from the library directly.  Using Dropbox eliminates having to hook up to my laptop to download my material.  The only other thing requiring a pc would be the deletion of files.  Is there anything on the NT that allows you do delete files without having to physically connect to a computer?

It is now next year.  Has anyone seen anything more regarding wifi transfer of library books?

Not for B&N, but Penguin just severed its relationship with Overdrive which means any newly released books won't be available from the libraries and is supposedly forcing Overdrive/Amazon to stop delivering library books over the air, making them use the download to computer, transfer to eReader option.

If you read the articles, the publishers want there to be more "friction" in the library lending/borrowing process.  In other words, they don't want it to be easy to borrow library books, in fact, there have been reports of requiring you to go into the library to download the library eBook.  I don't know how this will affect any additional over the air library downloading, but it doesn't look good.

So now, Penguin, MacMillan and S&S don't allow library lending at all (although older Penguin books are still there for now) and HarperCollins has put a 26 lends limit on a book before the library has to renew the license.  I don't know what Hachette's stand on it is.  Random House still seems to allow unrestricted lending.

Yes, because heaven forbid that a library borrower should have to encounter any ugly bit rot* in a HarperCollins publication.

* bit rot - Hypothetical disease the existence of which has been deduced from the observation that unused programs or features will often stop working after sufficient time has passed, even if ‘nothing has changed’. The theory explains that bits decay as if they were radioactive. As time passes, the contents of a file or the code in a program will become increasingly garbled.
