Android Marketplace App Access for Nook Tablet
Status: AcknowledgedThe Nook Tablet requires several modifications in order to take advantage of its hardware. We at XDA-Developers would like the opportunity to provide these modifications. The team of devleopers working on the nook is doing alright, but the processor is being used nowhere near its potential. I'd recommend providing a unlocked xLoader for debugging purposes. This would allow Nook Tablet to take advantage of the open-source ecosystem, allowing for updates to the device with minimal work.
Utilizing Open-Source, porting Android 4.0 would be a trivial task for Barnes and Noble. There are plenty of open-source enthusiasts which will galdly do the work. This work, since it is open-source, may be taken, modified and digitally signed by Barnes and Noble.
Please consider releasing an open-ended X-Loader.
App development is stifled on this device.
Status: DuplicateWithout the ability to sideload apps, there can be no development on the device. This needs to be changed so that the market can continue to prosper. Without new developers working on their own projects, the market goes stale. If the market goes stale, the nook does not get recommended by other users and especially geeks. If the nook is not recommended by geeks or users, the Kindle Fire is.
Audible.com & Android Market
Status: Not LikelyI love my new tablet, I do . BUT that said I would LOVE to be able to share my Audible.com and B&N love on one device. I LOVE reading and listening to book and being able to have my Audible.com app on my nook tablet would make it so I can listen to books at my desk when I can't read them.
And let's be honest here. The nook app store is nice but if you expanded to allow the Android Market.....you'd be allowing more accesability to apps and more people would be buying the better tablet because of what is allowed. I know that you want people to use the "nook apps" but the limited selection that you choose to allow.....is unfair.
Ability to cut, copy and paste text.
If there are legal issues with allowing this with books and magazines, at least allow apps like Evernote to have the feature so one can re-arrange text by moving a paragraph around with cut/paste.
Please provide Nook Tablet (and Color) 3rd party software side-loading without the need to root the device.
Back button not accessible enough in browser
Status: AcknowledgedThe browser was designed to have a hardware back button. However the only back option is at the top of each page. For those of us who read long pages, it takes a long time to get back to the top, several swipes are required. I would like this fixed with a permanent back button on the bottom of the screen rather than dynamic buttons.
In the next firmware update please condsider placing a "Home" soft key on the same black strip where the "notifications" and status of speaker/battery/time are displayed.
Ability to backup/restore Nook Tablet including all application settings and application data
Status: AcknowledgedThere is currently no way to backup any of the application data, application settings, or Nook settings on the Nook Tablet/Color. This is a real problem which needs to be addressed. I was recently instructed by support to do a factory reset on my device to see if this would solve the problem (which it didn't). Afterwards I had to manually reconfigure every single nook setting. I was able to re-download all my books, magazines, and applications, but none of the data associated with the applications is stored anywhere but on the nook and there is no way to backup or restore that data. Can we please have a method to backup and restore our Nook Devices?
Please bring back the onscreen quick menu
Status: AcknowledgedPlease bring back the onscreen quick menu so that we don't have to work the "N" button to death. Please, please, pretty please
bring it back. I don't know why it was removed it is SO much easier and faster to use than pressing that dratted button. I hate having to push the "N" button all the time--I just know it will break from all the over-use.
Book organization
Status: AcknowledgedCan we please have the option to sort books by something other than alphabetical... like release date... order in a series... genre... etc?
Nook App Store Categories Confusing / Redundant
Status: AcknowledgedThis issue has been brought up ever since the first nooks arrived. It's one of those things that keeps coming back up and is universally agreed to be a real oversight.
Nook owners (at the very least NC and NT owners), really want on device file management. Recently it's been a complaint as regarding the downloads folder. People download epubs using the web browser, but the epubs don't show up in their library visual, they must instead always go to the downloads folder in order to read downloaded books or look at photos they've downloaded. Or, they must hook up to a computer to move the files over to their "appropriate" areas on the nook.
It really would be nice to be able to move items or copy items on the device. It actually is considered by many to be a necessity-deleting, moving, copying, pasting.
If there's an app in the works, it really would be nice for B&N to look at it and get it approved soon. If not, it would be nice for B&N to create one.
Please release an update to the Night Mode. I would very much like to see a black background with white text as most e-reader apps have.
I never had this problem with my prior night reading on an iPod touch with both the Overdrive & Kindle apps, and assumed the Nook Tablet would have the same option. Am very much hoping this can be added soon.
The current Night Mode with the grey background is still too light and bright in a dark room. I turn the brightness all the way down before bed, and if I wake up to read in the middle of the night it is still too stark. Thanks.
Allow content delivery on a device by device basis
Status: AcknowledgedRight now any BN content (books, magazines, apps. etc.) that is bought automatically tries to download on every device registered to the account. Granted, this is a nice feature for people who want to share content: a married couple who wants to share books, a parent who wants to buy books for their child, even some one like me who just wants to share apps between a Color and a Tablet.
However, it does cause some headaches. A parent with a shared account with a child might not some of the more spicy books on the child's device. Someone with an eInk NOOK will still have to download books that only work on a color device. In my personal example, I have apps on my Tablet that I don't want on my Color, yet I can not selectively remove them from just my Color.
Making it possible to go into MyNOOK and select certain devices to download certain content on would be a great boon to people who have multiple devices.
I would HOPE that B&N PR and execs read these posts here in the forums, also just search anyone of these keywords on the internet via Bing or Google, Yahoo, etc. and read the posts of YOUR customers.
I know this post will attract TROLLS that are against anyone of these items however, they ALL have validity and ALL have ONE theme in common... Leave the Nook OPEN, develop, make your content better, grow your platform and store and apps, etc. for the "bottom line" and to give reason for people to embrace and to give the highest advertising of all; "Word of Mouth Recommendation" and even yet like I did, to buy a devices as gifts knowing that my family or friends will be VERY happy for years to come...
Now, as you close the platform and try what even Apple has tried since it's inception (mind you unsuccessfully and NEVER will be) to lock their platform down has only given rise to more problems and more frustration and more resentment, animosity towards the same brand your trying to promote!
Apple has 1000% more exprience and monitary strength than B&N will ever dream of and just look how they have avidly tried but horribly failed to prevent their users and customers from customizing and using as they please in anyway they deem their pleasure and be on any network they care...
Amazingly enough, it has NOT deminished their sales, has not detracted from the brand, has not lessened the user experience and did not break their ecosystem...
Those of us that chose to root, alter, develop, experiment, etc. on the NOOK, B&N should not be concerned as we acknowledge and accept voiding, etc.
The majority wil chose not to root, alter, develop, experient, etc.
My Two Cents..
I would love to have the option to add my books to a shopping bag for my Nook books. I often buy more than one book per shopping session and I find it annoying to have to check out for each book. Then I get a purchase confirmation email for each book. Not very efficient.
Am I the only one who feels this way?
The development community would like to work on Android 4.0 apps. This device has the hardware requirements met with it's OMAP4430 processor. As Android 2.3 is getting older now, development is stopped on this OS and moved to Android 4.0 currently. Without the newestOperating Systems availabe for development on the Nook Tablet, the device is out of date and newer apps are not compatible.
