Charger is not working Correctly

I think it's defective. When I try to charge the device with it on it appears green as if it is charging, but when I turn the device off it's orange as it is charging. It does charge when its off. But now I've been charging the device for 9 Hours while off. When I turned it on again it was still 16% I do not have time to travel to my nearest store. Is there anyway I can fix this without traveling out.
STOP CALLING IT A TABLET!

The Tablet does need to be on to charge. If it is off and you plug it into the charger, it will turn itself on. The light will be amber or orange while charging and green when fully charged. The best solution is to go to a store, but if that is not possible, I would suggest either calling B&N or using the online support chat feature.
