Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

There appears to be some issues with the Music Player.  It doesn’t consistently show the MP3 files that are being added to the SD card.  When you first add files, they appear in the music player however if you go back and add more files, these do not get listed in the music player.

I have tried the following to address the issue but to no avail:
• Shut down and rebooted the tablet
• Undocked and re inserted the SC card
• Formatted the SD card
• Unregistered and re-registered the tablet

The only way I can get the music to be recognized by the music player is to format the SD card and copy all of the files to the SD card in one session.  If I eject the Nook, SD card and open the player, everything is there, album art and all.  However if I try to add more files, they never appear in the music player, although I can see them listed when I browse to the SD card on the Nook.  So my current workaround when I want to add more music is to format the SD card and add all of the files along with the new music in one session.  Obviously, this is a cumbersome way to manage music.

Any insight you could provide would be helpful.

If this is a known bug and they are working on a fix, I’d appreciate that information.

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

I also have this problem.  I was able to add music to the SD card the first time and it was fine.....a week or so later I added more to the SD card but the player never sees it.  I looked through the files on the SD card through the nook library "my files" on the SD card and the music did transfer to the card.  The nook will play a song if I select it through the My Files in the library but it will only play the one song I select and none of the song info displays in the player (group, title, etc.)  it says "null-null".

I am going to try what you did and completely clear off the SD card and reload it will all the stuff again and see if it will see the music now.

If I have to do this everytime I want to add a song or album I'm gonna be pissed!

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

Well..............After "unmounting" and deleting all the contents of the SD card............rebooting the nook.......then reinstalling the SD card.......coping all my music and video files back to the card via USB ..............everything now shows up that is supposed to.  I don't know why I have to go through all that to just add a few songs to the nook SD.....but at least it is a solution for now.

I have a 16GB class 10 SD card.  I'm getting a 32GB class 4 next week.  Don't know if the class 10 is the issue since they recommend nothing more than a class 6 but I can't find them.  I know if the nook only supports up to a class 6 it will just operate at the level and being it is actually a 10 card shouldn't really matter.  I always thought they would just operated at the highest class the device is capable of (in this case 6).

Whatever......I just hope the other card I'm getting will make a difference.  I need the additional 16GB for some video and more music so hopefully it will be easier that going through that mess everytime I want to add something.

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

I'm sorry to say that I don't think a different class card will fix this problem because I have a 32gb class 4 card and it's doing the exact same thing. At first it worked perfectly fine, but now it's doing the exact same thing with the music files.

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

I have the same problem. The files are there, and I can play them by finding them in the SD card file browser, but they don't show up in the music player.  Very frustrating. Nook Software is v. 1.4.2

Just checking..are you properly ejecting your Nook after loading your music? and what file are you storing the music in?

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

Good question - yes, I'm properly ejecting.  The actual music files are present and playable, but you have to navigate the SD directories manually to find them, and play the .mp3 files one by one.

This is so frustrating!  I don't understand how a company can develop something as wonderful as my Nook Tablet and have such a glitch!!

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

I had the same issue and what resolved it was this.

With your NOOK Tablet on, open Music Player.

Now quit Music Player and turn off the Tablet.

Pull the SD card and Reboot the NT.

Open Music Player (it will be slow to open).

Quit Music Player and turn NT off.

Insert SD card and Reboot the NT.

Open Music Player.

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

I had the same issue and it drove me nuts!  The way I resolved it was by connecting my Nook Tablet to my computer with the USB cable and then I navigated my SD Card to the directory called "LOST.DIR".  In this directory there was a file named "29653".  I deleted it and then ejected my Nook from my computer and removed USB cable.  I then held my power button down for a few seconds and selected the "Power off" option.  I then restarted my Nook Tablet and then started Music Player.  I immediately noticed when I went in to the "Recently added" folder all the new mp3 songs I just added were now showing properly, and the songs now came up when doing the Search function, and the songs no longer had the "null - null" info.  I hope this helps you too!

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

This is a correction to my previous post -- Well, I experienced the issue on my next music update and tried deleting the file in "LOST.DIR" directory but that still didn't resolve the issue.  But then I just remembered that I did delete some other files per someone elses previous post, and I retried deleting these other files and it worked this time.  Therefore, I believe the following steps can be followed each time you update your music to workaround this bug..

1. Connect my Nook Tablet to my computer with the USB cable and when AutoPlay dialog appears, pick the "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer" option.

2a. In Windows Explorer, click on "MyNOOK" in the left side tree and then click on the "B&N Downloads" folder.  If you see a ".nomedia" file, click on it and delete it.

2b. In Windows Explorer, click on "Removable Disk" on the left side tree and then click on the "B&N Downloads" folder.  If you see a ".nomedia" file, click on it and delete it.

3. Eject NOOK Tablet by clicking on lower right side System Tray icon that says.. "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media".

4. Remove USB cable from Nook Tablet.

5. Power down your Nook Tablet by holding down the Power button for about 3 seconds.  The Power button is located on the upper left side.  When the dialog appears, select the "Power off" option.  (*** This step is important because if you don't power it down then the issue will still be present).

6. Turn your Nook Tablet back on by holding down the Power button for about 4 seconds.

7. Start the Music Player.

Hopefully, you'll notice when clicking in the "Recently added" object in the Music Player you'll now see the new .mp3 songs you recently added.  Also, the new songs should now be retrievable when using the Music Player Search function, and the songs should no longer have the "null - null" info.

I don't know why I have to do these steps everytime I add new songs, but at least I can workaround this bug by following the above steps each time I add new music content.  Hopefully, Barnes & Noble will develop a permanent fix in the future.  I hope this helps for now!!

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

Well, the problem continued again.  This time I noticed in.. Settings-->Device Info-->About Your NOOK ..that I was still on Software version 1.4.1  ..so I went to the Barnes and Noble site and downloaded and upgraded my Nook Tablet to Software version 1.4.3 ..and now that seems to have solved the issue with the newly added .mp3 songs not being recognized by Music Player.  --So far so good!

Thanks for a simple solution that works!   I have a 32GB SDHC card that worked fine in the tablet until recently. Would download music and pictures and they would show up on the tablet without a problem.

I've used less than 2GB on the memory card so was surprised when all of a sudden my recently transferred  files weren't showing up on the NOOK even though they were definitely on the memory card.

Also found that this solution works with My Media if you have pictures that load to the memory card but don't show up in your picture gallery. Am wondering if just taking out the SD card with the NOOK off then re-inserting it would work as well (without running Music Player or My Media).  Might try that next time as I am afraid that this might be an ongoing situation whenever files are transferred.  Just frustrating as you really shouldn't have to be taking out/unmounting the SD card to make things work. Not particularly good for the memory card, either!

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

After I copy new songs to the sd card they do not show up in the library. I go to them in the folder and some of artist info shows as null yet when I play them in windows media player it shows what they are.

I've tried rebooting the nook, taking card out, putting it back in,l deleted and recopied the files all at one time

They have all been copied to myfiles/music...not seperated by folders.

All are in the mp3 format.

Sometimes when I hit refresh or browse recently added some files will start to show up but others never do

It keeps dropping. nomedia files in the B&N downloads folder in both the main drive and the sd card.

My software version is up to date.

I've tried resetting the nook back to factory default...issue keeps reoccuring

I've even installed the emusic app and went to the my library option...issue occurs there too.

What happens when you copy the files to the My Files/Music folder of your Nook?

Re: Music Player Does Not Update List When Adding New MP3 Files

The entire list disappears. I have to rehook the nook back up to the computer and delete files in these folders

b&n downloads on both drives...nomedia file

.doc thumbs on sd card drive

albumthumbnails on both drives

sometimes files in lost.dir on both drives

i have to do this once or twice before files show back up.

this also happens when I sideload books too. but the bok libary updates.

Alice, that's very strange. Unfortunately, I don't know what will fix it. I would have thought moving it to Nook disk itself would fix it.

.....

THERE is one of the glaring problems with this P.o.S.  Apps like Music Player have no way to quit them.  Sure, if you managed to get Go Launcher sideloaded before B&N kneecapped the device, then you have a utility to *kill* running applications, but things like Music Playercan't be shut off once you've started them.  Pandora has much the same problem, and you can only stop it from playing by killing the app, or logging out of your account (yet another PITA).
