Video format and bitrate for nook tablet? free encoding options?

what bitrate videos can the nook play or doesnt it matter?

does anyone know of a free encoding software to make video files smaller and a lower quality?

ive been using this software: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102922

which is great to change formats, but is there another option that will let me change the quality to shrink the filesize of a movie from about 2.5GB down to ~700mb?

i dont know yet if the 2.5gb files will even play yet as i only have a 2gb microsd card at the moment

but ill be trying it soon

Well I don't know exactly what the bitrate has to be (if any), but there are a couple of programs I've used to make nook playable movies, that I can recommend.  My first choice is DVDCatalyst, but it's not free.  It is however, only $10, and works with the MovieGallery app available through B&N.  The second is Handbrake.  It is a free download and works quite well too, but you pretty much have to know the details to enter in it's options to get the correct settings for the nook.  DVDCatalyst does all that for you and is pretty much just one click.

FREEMAKE Video Converter!  It's free, easy and a great program!  I use it all the time!

Variable Bit Rates...

DVD Catalyst: Very cool feature that allows variable Bit rates with action scenes getting higher rates and long hold shots getting slower rates so that the final file size is as small as possible.

Optimized settings for Nook Tablet and Color with choices of video quality vs. file size.  Excellent rendering of commercial DVD movies and Bluray disks.  Also can convert other video files like the edited home videos I make of snowboarding and off-road motorcycle riding.  It is worth way more than the $10 I paid for it.

Thanks for this!

I have been using Handbrake and trying to come up with a conversion template that works nicely for nooks. I am trying this software now using the "Android" setting. I can't wait to see how it turns out. I have been looking for a free, easy to use video convertor for use with my Nook(s). Thanks very much! :smileyhappy:

YW!  I have Handbrake as well but found Freemake afterwards and it was so much easier to use.  I use it to convert Youtube music videos into mp3's quite a bit as well.

The nooktablet likes H264 video and AAC audio, however, it will not play anything that is larger than 2GB in size, even if you have a larger memorycard.

The NOOKcolor has a screen-size limitation for video (854x480 max) but the NOOKtablet doesn't. I actually got it to play 1920x1080 (1080p) video files.

In my experience, the Nook Color is limited to Baseline Profile. Can the Tablet play Main Profile, Extended profile or High Profile H.264 video?

H.264 XP 480p HD at 1Mbps would go a good way toward a compact file, though 1024x574 would give full screen resolution without upscaling.

I've been looking everywhere for the settings for Freemake.  Is there anyone who can tell me what they are?

Thanks!
