Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

The biggest suggestion (actually the only suggestion I've seen) is to buy an SD card.  Doesn't that work for collections of all sizes?

Especially given that if one's B&N library becomes too large for the partition, one only has to download said books to PC, archive them at bn.com, transfer downloaded books to SD card and voila, access to all the books.

With SD cards going for $5, I can't see how it isn't feasible.

In regards to the Mac download .pdb files - I can't explain how I get the epub files - when I click download in My Nook Library that is what pops up - the only pdb files I get are books that are only in that format - sorry I can't be of more help with how I can get the downloads to work on Mac as I don't do anything special to get them, that's why I found it odd that someone stated you could only download .pdb on Macs.

I figured this out -- BN.com is specifically detecting Mac users and sending .pdbs when possible. There's a way around it, though, by making the site think you're running on another (non-Mac) computer.

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

This was well known in the pre-release reviews.  I personally side-load everything, even content bought from B&N.  I just spent the $8 on a 4GB microSD and got on with my life.

Its strange, no one is bothered that the seemingly easy solution of buying cheap micro sdram will effectively mean that you cant use the library sort function .... or remember the last page read of book from such storage!

I suppose this also means no more viewing the book cover ... simply viewing the filename as part of the directory index!

Any other disadvantage one can think of using the external SD?

Huh?  Last page read is remembered on books located on the SD Card and you can see the book covers as well.

Where did you get your information?

You can use the library sort function also.  Sorry, VipulBhadra, you're 0 for 3.  Books loaded on the SD card are no different than books loaded to the nook.

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

I agree that there's an issue with the 2nd edition having less memory than the 1st Edition.

Reading this and other threads,  the question that I have is what is B&N going to do when the 760MB isn't enough to hold my library?  Tech Support is telling people to archive some of their books so that they can download new books, but overtime if you are a heavy user (like me) it is possible that 760 MB may not hold the entire list of books, never mind having the actual books loaded into the Nook.

It's not even possible to tell how full your 2nd Edition Nook is because the Device Info page (under Settings) displays "Available storage", but this is only 236MB so it is the "non-barnes and noble content".  There is no Indicator for the 760MB of storage available for B&N Content.

I would really like to know how much space I have left in the Nook for both!

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

I agree with you, for the simple fact this is supposed to be an evolution of the old model. However, not only they removed the mp3 player, but 'castrated' the memory. Since one of the advantages over the Kindle is the ability to read my local library's epub files, it's funny they restrict exactly that storage.

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

The MP3 player is gone because they also took out the headphone jack.  Remember, Nook 2E is designed to be a long-life e-reader.  You won't get 2 months of batter life if you're playing music.

Slap a $4 SD card in and you've got room for thousands of books.  It's not that uncommon of a need; cameras have been doing this for ages and my daugther's new android smart-phone will not let her store A SINGLE THING to the internal memory.  Everything is "side-loaded."  At least B&N gave you some internal memory so you don't have to get a card just to get turn it on.

The DOT is on the same 'key' as the question mark.  You have to hit shift to get the question mark, but if you just hit that key you get the period.

Hope this helps!

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

Just opened mine and ran into the same problem.  I'm very disappointed as a big fan of the Nook.  I currently own the 1st gen Nook, the Nook color and now the new Nook.  This is the first time I've felt let down by the product and the brand.  I'm glad to find out that at least there is more space available for all my purchases, I had assumed the 240mb was all I was getting.  It is the first time I've purchased any device and not been able to use all of the space available to me.

This is going to do a number on a lot of first time Nook buyers.  It's one of the first times I'll probably not recommend this specific model of Nook to friends and family.  It isn't a huge deal, and I can pay a little more to put in a memory card but the whole ordeal just feels very dishonest and I feel slightly cheated.  I really hope locking down the extra space is worth these sorts of feelings from customers.

Serously?  The first time?

My last two computers have reserved at least 10GB of their hard drives for "system recovery partitions" that I can't remove.

My daugther's new phone came with NO useable memory.  NONE.  1GB onboard but 0K available to install apps or take pictures.

My latest camera could take just SIX pictures wihtout an SD card installed.

B&N, at least, gave you enough memory to carry around about 500 or so extra books beyond the 500 to 1000 you could order from B&N and store in the reserved memory (plus unlimited storage on their website or in your computer using Nook for PC).  Trust me, they are being way nicer thank anyone else I've run into in a while.

As the Nook is a B&N branded ereader, it seems logical to me most memory space is reserved for B&N content. It would be bad for B&N's business if people could not buy B&N content because of lack of memory space.

Especially since you can add a micro sd-card to add up to 32GB of memory for sideloaded content.

Kindle has only 3GB of user memory that cannot be expanded. So if you have a lot of sideloaded content you are actually better off with the Nook.

You can use "all of the space available."  You've got 1GB available, and you can use it all.  You just don't get to choose how you use it unless you root your device, which of course you can choose to do - it's your device after all.

As far as the other GB is concerned, to my knowledge ALL computers include their OS in the device storage.  Therefore every computer you buy will have less memory available than is listed in the specs.  This is standard practice.  The original nook was the same way.  To expect anything else would be silly.

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

"It's the same thing as when you buy a PC or a MAC.  You're told how big the hard drive is BEFORE it's formatted and BEFORE the Operating System is installed and BEFORE all the cute little programs that the PC manufacturers install without your permission. How is this different?"

It's different because formatting a hdd DOES NOT take up space. Formatting DELETES everything from a hard drive. How does deleting everything take up space? It doesn't, that's how. Storage manufacturers use base 10 math not binary when they say how big the hard dive, thumb drive, dvd, etc. is. There IS NOT 1000MB per GB, there's 1024. The whole formatting line is a lie, and people like you propagate the lie when you use it to make a point. If you want to know how big a hdd, or whatever, really is, multiply what they're selling by .9317. For example, my 500GB is really 465.85GB. It has nothing to do with my OS, formatting or anything else storage manufacturers care to use to justify the lie. It's math.

"Quite possibly you should sell your naivete and bottle it."

Advice you should take to heart yourself. By the way, it's naiveté, but you were close enough to make yet another point i guess.

Formatting DOES take up space. Formatted capacity of a disk drive is less than raw physical capacity. Depending on the type of file system it can be much less.

A formatted disk with file system reserves space for the volume table of contents, directory structure, journal (if a journaled file system), spare blocks, etc.

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

"Formatting DOES take up space. Formatted capacity of a disk drive is less than raw physical capacity. Depending on the type of file system it can be much less."

The formatted capacity is less because it's show as a binary value.

1024 bytes x 1024 kilobytes x 1024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte. If you take a base 10 gigabyte and break it down as your OS sees it this is what you get. 1,000,000,000 bytes ÷ 1024 = 976562.5 Kilobytes ÷ 1024 = 953.67 Megabytes ÷ 1024 = .9313 Gigabytes. The raw physical capacity is shown in base 10 math. 1000 x 1000 x 1000. There are not 1,000,000,000 bytes to a GB to your OS, there are 1,073,741,824.

See here.  Disc Capacity 101

"A formatted disk with file system reserves space for the volume table of contents, directory structure, journal (if a journaled file system), spare blocks, etc."

This amount is trivial.
