There is no SD card issue on the N2E, other than getting it inserted properly.  The SD card problems were with the N1E.

I'm a pretty reasonable guy, but when I upgraded from the Nook Classic to the new Simple Touch Nook ( I drove an hour to a Barnes and Noble last night to find one) I was SHOCKED to find that this new device only gives me 240 MEGABYTES (That's 1/4 of a a GB for you non-techies) of space for content that is NOT purchased from Barnes and Noble.

OK, so if you read the fine print on the web site, it does state that 1GB of the space is for the system and of the remaining 1GB, UP TO 750 MB may be reserved for content from Barnes and Noble.

BUT... there is a big difference between "up to 750MB" and "MAY BE reserved" and the fact that 750 MB is ACTUALLY reserved.  I only have 240MB of space available for my personally formatted e-books.  Even though I have bought nothing from B&N yet, my Nook's memory only shows 240MB available.

I hope tech support gets LOADS of phone calls on this and that the news gets out about this false advertising.  OK, so I can get a micro-SD card and get the memory I want, but the false advertising and stinginess with the memory on MY device is enough to make me want to desert to Amazon and buy a Kindle next time around.

I asked customer service if they would give me the $10 to buy an SD card to get the memory they told me I was getting in the advertising and they said, "No"  I then asked if I could lodge a complaint and was put on hold for what seemed like forever, and I finally gave up and decided to vent on this forum.

Hope lots of people read this.

Yes.  I consider it deceptive advertising for B&N to say the new Nook has 2 g's of memory while not saying half of that is used only for the operating system to run the thing.  They know they are implying it's there for the customer's use in direct competition with other eReaders.  I don't care a bit what the fine print on the web site says.  The employess in the store are not saying that and that is whre the majority of the sales are being conducted.

I'm not that very tech savvy when it comes to harddrive memories can someone give my an about of how many e-books 750 MB can hold?

Help me down the crooked road. Lead me to the light. I'm not sure I know the way but with you beside me, I'm certain we'll make it through.

I think it's somewhere in the ballpark of 750, higher or lower depending on how big your files are.

A regular member here at the discussion board stated that she was able to load aprox 500 books from her presentcollection into the Nook2.

It all depends on the book size and I believe that children's books take more space so fewer can be stored.

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

Shadowcat: Ebooks are really tiny, usually anywhere from 400 kb to 800 kb. Some of my "largest" ebooks are plain pdfs around 1 mb, but I do have a few picture heavy pdfs that are closer to 10 mb. So 750 mb should hold about 800 books, as long as you don't put anything huge on there.

It's the same thing as when you buy a PC or a MAC.  You're told how big the hard drive is BEFORE it's formatted and BEFORE the Operating System is installed and BEFORE all the cute little programs that the PC manufacturers install without your permission.

How is this different?

So basically anyone who understands (not necessarily agrees with) what B&N is doing is a self-righteous know it all?  Wake up and smell the coffee.  B&N is in business to make money.  They didn't get into the e-reader business to make you or me happy or for yours or my convenience.  They're in the e-reader business to sell e-books FROM THEIR STORE.  It is not such a hardship to purchase a 2GB card (which will hold approximately 2000 books for less than $5.  If that is a hardship then you shouldn't have bought the Nook in the first place.

Quite possibly you should sell your naivete and bottle it.  Then you could afford an SD card.

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

To the poster who was upset about not being able to back your books from the Nook to the PC.  Download and install Nook for PC and then download the books to the computer that.  Easy solution.

I agree they should probably be a little more clear on this, but, the fact that they've saved space for books bought at BN only makes sense to me.  They want you to buy the books from them, that's where they're going to make some money.  They've set it up so you can buy books from other sellers, they've just reserved more space for their books.

Thanks for letting me know about the Kobo. I had not considered it since the closest Borders to me closed down but I'll take a look at both of them in person.

A SanDisk 2Gb micro SD card costs $0.98 on Amazon right now (just checked)

That makes people seem silly for complaining about a problem they could correct for a buck.  But how much is shipping on that 98c card?

I found a 2GB SanDisk microSD card for just 51c there.  Oh, AND 5 bucks for shipping.  At 51c, I figured I could buy a pile of them, to amortize the shipping costs.  Ah, not so much.  30 of them cost $150 to ship.  Riiiight!  :smileysad:  Some Amazon sellers are not very honest.

I'm guessing you can't get that 2 GB card you mentioned for a buck either.

Possibly satisfied customers, who still do buy some of their ebooks from them, just not 75%.  Vs. ex-customers who buy everything from someone else.

One of my reason for getting the Nook is to upload reference books/reports that I already have in PDF format.

Since I am limited to only 240GB of memory..., I'm not sure if the Nook will work for me.

Does anyone know of any other e-readers (like the new Kobo) that will allow me to set the memory for books not purchased through B&N or Amazon?

...

That said, you might be happier with the kobo device.  I hear it handles PDF files better as it allows you to pan and zoom, while the nooks do not.

The Kobo does handle PDFs much better, at the moment.  And though it's possible B&N could improve that at some point, based on comments here from AlanNJ and others, why should they bother if they're not selling things in that format?

A couple other pluses for the Kobo is that its full 1 GB of content space is available for material obtained from any source.  In fact, according to one poster at MobileRead.com, it actually has 1400 MB available.  It also supports TXT, RTF, and CBR/CBZ format files (and MOBI), which the NookST does not.  (Based on their Spec page, even though it's still a Nook, the ST no longer supports PDB format books.)

OTOH, the Kobo Touch doesn't have as good a selection of type faces, or font sizes as the Nook ST.  Which is a pretty important consideration (for ePUBs, not PDFs).  The screen touch isn't as sensitive, and sometimes requires multiple taps (though perhaps this could be adjusted).  And the page turns flash way worse than the Nook ST, from the videos I've seen, which was a bit of a turnoff for me.  Though since they're using exactly the same screen technology, they could incorporate an algorithm similar to B&N's and accomplish the same thing.

I don't think there's any clear-cut winner.  Either will let you add up to a 32 GB SDcard for your sideloded content, and even a very cheap 2 GB card (as others have mentioned)  will hold all your current PDFs, with room for many more.  So that shouldn't be a deal-breaker, and you still have to do some comparison shopping to decide which is best for your needs.

When I see the statistics showing hordes of B&N users leaving to go to other companies I'll give this some credibility.  Why don't people understnd that B&N is in business to make money?  Is that so difficult to comprehend?  We don't live in a commune.  This is a capitalistic society.  Nobody gets anything for free.  Accept reality and deal with it.

I paid ~$4 including shipping.  I'm still waiting for the card but that's all I paid.

Re: 2 GB NOOK SIMPLE TOUCH ONLY HAS 240MB OF MEMORY

Why would they want their eReader to get filled up with non-BN books? Exactly. Thats the first thing I thought of...future revenue/profit. That's like buying Claim Jumper and eating it at Red Lobster.
