Has anyone seen these in stores yet for demos?

Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

My mother is 90 years old and frequently in the hospital. I have the Nook ST but it's a problem at night when she wants the light out and then I can't see it. So I have preordered the NST with glow light. It is so much lighter than a tablet. My son has a Nook Color and it gets heavy holding it. I also have a netbook for the same reason- much lighter and easier to have in a hospital room. Hospital has wifi. I also take the NST to work to read on breaks. I couldn't do that with a big old tablet so I'm happy with what I've got.

The local B&N has a big stack of the brochures for the Glow Light model, but no demo units to display. This close to the launch window, you'd think there would be at least a few already set up in select B&N stores somewhere or other. But that doesn't appear to be the case, at least here in MO.

Oy Vey!  What a dilemna,,,, Return it :smileyhappy:  Don't return it :smileysad:

or is it......  Return it :smileysad:  Don't return it :smileyhappy:

Such decisions!

B&N's 14 day return policy is just part of the cost of doing business.  Also, the returned unit will probably be "refurbished" and given to someone else as part of the warranty program.

I was in a store on Saturday and asked if they had any demo units yet; she told me "no" and that they probably wouldn't have any until May 1st.  Oh well, I guess I'll just to wait until mine is delivered.

Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

There are stores that just got demo units to try out today in my district. Haven't been yet mostly because the store closest to me hasn't gotten them yet. Expected tomorrow they said.

Ah- thanks BrassMonkey!  I had assumed her comments applied to all stores; good to know.

No prob, and as expected, my local store just got them in today according to a friend who texted me a picture. They are charging them and putting them on display tonight.

I'm jealous!  Was your "expected ship date" May 1?

As a side note most stores should have their demos in already if you want to see the device in action.

The light actually works much better than I thought it would.

I'm confused by their statement that there is an 8-inch band of brighter light at the top.  It's a 6-inch screen, so... maybe this is a typo?

They also seem a bit confused about what formats can be read on which devices.  But I am glad to hear they gave it a good review.

And Engadget:

It seems like the contrast took more of a hit than I was hoping for, but it's still very good and certainly not unusable.

I'm reasonably sure he meant "eighth-inch." That last H makes all the difference.

Yes, he was very wrong to emphasize the Nook's being restricted to the B&N ecosystem. It isn't, as we all know. We can buy ebooks from Google, Sony, Kobo, etc., etc., and so forth. I was looking for a place to post a comment to that effect, but that article doesn't seem to be open to comments.

Here's the author's bio page, which lists his email address (doesn't allow for a public comment of course, but it's a way to convey a message to him).

Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

If reading with the light on bothered my wife I would jump all over this.  As it is, though, I'll just wait until my current Nook goes bad or I get bored with it.

Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

I'm actually more excited about it for me (my wife doesn't mind much, either).  I don't like full lamps because I usually fall asleep while reading (and that *would* bother my wife) and I've always hated the constant fiddling with the position of clip-on lights.  With ereaders, the problem is worse because of the potential for glare.  I have zero interest in reading a book on an LCD screen.  This new Nook is, quite literally, something I've been waiting for for decades!  I'm feeling all sorts of giddy over it.  :-)
