Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

I stopped at the local store near me & the area they have it setup is in the shadows so got a pretty good feel for the light & I was impressed, I preordered one to be in the store I guess when they receive their 1st shipment. It also seemed to me not to have any glare at all so the preinstalled antiglare screen does its job, I could tell it was slightly lighter I can't wait to get it...

You may actually get one.  David Pogue has been around for years and seems to play up the idea that he's a technology "everyman" who just gets to play with the latest toys.

NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight-User Review

I've had the Nook Simple Touch with glow light for a week and thought others might want to know about my experience with it.

The Nook Glow is light, easy to use, and down loads books in a few seconds but there are some drawbacks

As a reader, I find it to be acceptable, i.e. not great. Here is my take why:

1. The digital ink produces a well defined image of each letter. While one can choose font style and size, the letters are not black on white but rather a shade of gray on white. This makes reading somewhat challenging (not impossible). Compared to the Kindle Touch (which I bought one day prior to the announcment of the Glow Light version), there is a world of difference in regards to clarity with the Kindle Touch having a huge edge on definition and distinction.

With the glow light on, the letters become even less well defined. Can I read it. Answer yes but the appearance is far from optimal for a digital reader.

2. The battery life is not what's advertised. Based on my reading patterns of about an hr/night, the battery with the glow light lasts no more than 3 days. This isn't a huge problem but I really expected the device to live up to the ad of roughly a month.

Frankly, I think the Kindle Touch has the edge as related to clarity and ease of reading, even without the glow light. Yes, the glow light is convenient but after having read books in the evening under a lamp for a zillion years, I really don't find the glow light to be a huge advantage.

I think I'll probably be turning it in prior to the end of the trial period (2 weeks) and just using a Kindle Touch just as I've used books for the past xxxx yrs.

Just thought you'd like to know....

@kenwinston

I think we get your message that you do not like the Simple Touch with Glowlight.....  I have seen your same post numberous times on this board, which makes me wonder.....

In any event, you compare apples to oranges, since the Kindle does not have a light yet - a better comparision would be the original Simple Touch to the Kindle...

Yes the text is not as dark on the Simple Touch with Glowlight, I have seen it and compared the two side by side, and the difference IMO is not that big a deal...

Agreed, the comparison is off.  The NST is to the Kindle Touch as the NST Glow is to... the nameless product that Amazon is working on but hasn't announced yet that will have a similar light on it.

BUT, this is why I think it would be bad for B&N to discontinue the NST in favor of the NST Glow.  Until they can make a Glow with the contrast of the NST, they need the NST in their lineup.

Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

I love the idea of the Glow and can't wait to see it in person!!  The only thing I wish it had though is 3G.  That's the one feature that keeps me glued to my n1e (that and I enjoy seeing the covers on the small color screen).  I'm constantly downloading on the go and use the 3G far more than my home WiFi.  My fingers are still crossed that they will bring it back, I'm just not holding my breath for it. :/

-In the mean time, perhaps the glow will be a good backup device.

Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

I just got mine yesterday. It works great. I couldn't be happier.

Personally, I always thought this was the only improvement/feature the nook needed.

Everything else is just like the original simple touch.

[ Edited ]

I just bought one last night, and I'm in love!  It's an amazing piece of technology.  One word of advice to those that want to see it in the store first- unfortunately, unless B&N decides to set up some way to display it in the dark or in a reduced-light setting, you will never be able to get the full effect unless you purchase one and take it home.  Sure, you can see that it is "glowing" in the store, but it's not the same as when you take it home and try it out.  It's so much more impressive in the dark.  I used mine for a couple hours last night, and I really like it.  And this is after I just purchased a Simple Touch in March (they announced the GlowLight just days after my trial period on that one ended- figures).  It took me quite awhile to decided to buy a Simple Touch in the first place because I was so happy with my NOOK First Edition, and after I did, I would never want to go back because the Simple Touches are so great.  Now, I love it even more that I don't have to use a separate M-edge light with it.  Makes it even that much more portable without the separate light.  Kudos to B&N for outsmarting Kindle on this one.

Maybe bring a thick blanket to put over your head to check it out? :smileytongue:  Let's face it, bookstores in general are brightly lit.

My B&N was telling people to sit under the display table, LOL.  Frankly, it was a good idea, it was pretty dark down there.  :smileyhappy:

Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

Does anyone know how "express shipping works". My glownook showed as having a shipping label generated May 6th (and the cover I ordered shows as having a shipping label generated May 4th) but since then no change (ok - my looking every few hours may be having a watched pots effect - but I have been updating the web page.....). Please tell me that its probably on its way and the shipping info is lagging...... I really, really, really want it to arrive

Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

I haven't ordered anything physical from B&N for over a year, but one of the issues I used to see what that they would ship something and then not update the shipping info, and then the book would arrive unexpectedly one day.  So, if it was sent expedited (3-day shipping), it should be there 3 days from when it shows it shipped (though I would count May 6 as May 7, since the 6th is not a business day), even if it doesn't update online.  So, possibly today, probably tomorrow, but maybe not 'til Thursday.

Young nook kid at my local store was actually pretty creative.  He had taken a large box, cut a hole in the bottom to fit over the display stand, and then a hole about 1/2 up on the front so you could get a little better idea of what it looked like in the dark.  Admittedly, ambient light was still coming through, but it was better than a blanket over your head!

No crank on the side?

Samsung Garnet Red Galaxy Tab2 (7.0"): Android 4.1.1 rooted
Acer Iconia A500: Android 4.0.3 rooted;; Nook Color: B&N 1.4.3 rooted
Nook Touch (two): B&N 1.2.1 rooted; Nook 1stEd/3G (two): B&N 1.7.0 rooted.
Customer loyalty is earned, not commanded or deserved, and easily lost.
Nothing is foolproof, because fools are so ingenious. Same for rooters.

@Hypatia1

I was in the same boat.  The label was generated late May 4th for mine, but nothing at UPS' site until Monday night.  It was a combination of UPS not receiving it until 11:30am and then not updating their website until the evening.  Mine is supposed to be delivered this evening with the "free shipping" option. It's arrived locally so I expect that to happen, but the website still doesn't show "out for delivery" yet.

Mine shows it was sent yesterday and the ups link shows it is out for delivery today. It has not arrived yet but should today.

Re: Announcing NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight

Okay, now I'm annoyed.  UPS says that mine arrived locally at 8am this morning.  Now 5 hours later it shows "Emergency conditions beyond UPS' control" and they claim it's arrived back in Illinois where it started out 2 days ago and I no longer have a ship date. I'm in Texas and it took 2 days to get here the first time. Has this happened to anyone else?
